[ Original Post ]
Hello ladies! I am 23 weeks and I am trying SOOOOOO hard to maintain my weight. Wondering if anyone else out there is and what you are doing. Any tips are great! I am 5'6" and I was 163 when I got prego. At my 19 week apt I was at 165 (Totally made me SOOOOOO Happy!!!) But Now I am 23 weeks and going for my Dr apt tomorrow, a little worried. My scale broke a few days ago(kinda a good thing since I was addicted to it) but last time I checked I was up to about 168. So I am hoping that is still true tomorrow! Just looking for ladies to chat with and support :)

Oh goodness I think a 5lb weight gain in 19weeks is great!! You are doing just fine! I have lost 11lbs so you don't want to do that! ha! I just hit second tri so I am finally getting over the morning sickness! But with my son (10mo) I didn't gain a lb from my 1st appt- 20week appt and then all of the sudden at 24weeks (which fell over the holidays) I gained 10lbs! Ouch! I ended up gaining like 25-30lbs total which the majority of it was in the last tri! Good luck but I think you are doing great!

Oh my you have enough things to worry about without trying to NOT gain weight. You NEED to gain SOME weight during pregnancy! There is a weight gain calculator online (I wish I could post the link) that gives you an idea of how much weight you should gain each week based on your prepregnancy weight and height. I entered yours and it recommended that you should be around 168 at 19 weeks and 170 at 23 weeks. I'd say you could gain a bit more and still be fine. Don't let weight worry you right now... you have enough on your plate!!

mom_of_1 I started out 50 pounds over weight and now at 27 weeks I have only gained 9 pounds and my doctor said I could gain around 15 pounds total and still be ok I just watch my portions and then when it warms I'll start walking

Name: Nerdy_Girl_10242006 | Date: Apr 3rd, 2008 3:05 PM
I'm 16w 3d and I am down 9lbs since pre pregnancy weight. I don't have much morning sickness. But I hate food. Don't get me wrong I still eat even if I don't have anything I don't like. But I changed my eating habits and I can't gain. I thought since my last appointment I would have gained but nope, lost 1lb. I gained 40lbs with my daughter, didn't lose any of it, she is 7 months now, so I got pregnant quick. So here I am now at 169, 178 pre pregnancy (well this pregnancy) I was 140 before my daughter

Hi girls, this is a good subject!! Well my weight fluctuates - a lot - ive allways been biggish but not excessively i wear like a us size 12-14. Im just a lot heavier than i look. Before i got pg i was 215lbs. At my 6wk app id put 3lbs on but at my 12wk id lost 6lbs. So right now im 3lbs less than i was and at almost 14wks i still feel like im loosing not gaining. Im not worried tho in fact im quite happy about it as its not good to have this weight and be pg anyway and im not trying to loose it im just eating when im hungry and having small snacks during the day. and drinking a lot of water. I would love to not put any weight on at all!! But i guess a stone or so will inevitabley go on. Someone told me that its quite common for big or heavy girls to loose weight while pg. Anyone else had the same? x x

Well I am so glad to hear I am not alone. I am not stressed about my weight. But with my first I gained like 40 lbs, lost it all, then got an IUD and gained about 10 back and couldnt lose it. Then got the IUD removed 1 month before getting preg this time and I had already lost 7 lbs in the 1 month. So I am considered Obese for my height and just really want to be healthy and more comfortable this pregnancy for me and my little girl!
I am watching what I REALLY well, but still giving in to my cravings or I would probably go crazy. I work out 4-5 times a week. 30 mins/2miles on the treadmill plus weight training. And stretching everyday. So I feel much better, but I am only 23.5 weeks and worried I will gain a ton in the next 17 weeks. I hope not.
I love the weight watchers diet and plan on going on that as soon as this little one is born since they have altered plans for breastfeeding moms. So I am kinda sticking with the basic healthy foods from that now so I can make sure I am eating good now.

I think I wont be buying a new scale till after the baby is born. I was so addicted(SERIOUSLY) to weighing myself ALL the time. Like everytime I pee'd which we all know seems like a million times a day!
I didnt realize with my first pregnancy that I was looking so large and now looking back I obviously didn't need to gain as much as I did. So I guess we do learn as we go.
My DD is 19 months and will be 23 mos when this baby is born. So I keep nice and active during the day chasing her everywhere, that probably helps this time too.

Hi There mom of 1. We sound like we are in exactly the same boat. Pre-prego weight was 161 and I'm 5'6" tall too. By 5 weeks I had gained 8 pounds becuase I was so sick that all I could eat was crappy food. I'm 19 weeks now and I'm up to 171, so I was able to maintain my weight for about 10 weeks. My trick is that I eat really healthy and exercise moderately (tred mill and nautilus) and I don't eat after 5 pm. My dr said that I could maintain my weight of 171 until weeks 24, so I have 5 more weeks of straining to maintain. It's such a PAIN isn't it! I am hoping not to gain more than 20 pounds since I was a bit chubby to begin with. Good luck maintaining. You'll be fine! I'm sure you look fab :)

Hi ladies! Love this question lol. Anyways heres my story. Im expecting my 3rd baby. With my first son i started out 140-145 pounds. It was always between there. In my first 4 months i lost 15 pounds but then gained them back when i felt better but thats all i gained. When i had him i was back to 140 pounds. With my second baby i started out a bit bigger i think i was like 160 pounds...yeah got big after having first baby i kinda let go :( Anyways i was soooo sick i lost 30 pounds through out the pregnancy and never gained a pound. I was like 130 pounds when she was born. And the baby was born at 36 weeks weighing 6 1/2 pounds! And the first baby born at 37 weeks weighed 7 1/2 pounds. This time i started out at 165 pounds and lost 15 pounds and im 16 weeks. Well the diffrence this time is its soooo hard for me not to gain. I control it so hard cuz i know if i gain too much my baby might be huge. I know that not all women can do that but i think if your a healthy weight and dont gain any then your baby will be fine! these days we have enouph good food and enouph fat stores for babys to be a good weight and i realy dont see why people fuss about weight gain. My doc told me that if her pregnant women are a good weight and dont gain during pregnancy she isnt worried expecialy that she makes sure the baby is growing. Thats all that matters! So now im still considered overweight for my height so i realy dont need to gain more. I keep that under control cuz being overweight isnt good either right?!!!

Julie~ Wow we are really close! So I just got back from my Dr apt and I am up to 170. So I gained 5 lbs in 4 weeks :( I was sooooooo bummed. But talked to the DR and he said that is great! He told me to relax about my weight and enjoy being pregnant. He said just keep doing what I am doing and if I gain 30 lbs total that is still fine cause I am being so healthy then I must need it. So I am going to try to stick to atleast 1 lb a week from here to the end........fingers crossed!

mom of 1. 170 sounds like a good place to be. I know it's such a bummer to see the scale go up at the dr's appt. I have one on Monday and I'm hoping that I"ve continued to maintain my weight. I've actually been eating a lot during hte day (fruit, protein, even ice cream sometimes!) and I have been ok when it comes to the scale. My mother in law keeps yelling at me telling me that I'm not gaining enough weight and I should be eating for two. My dr says that is NOT the case and that most women are under the misconception that they need to gain so much weight. One of my friends gained 60 pounds in her pregnancy and she has SO many problem. The baby was also huge and they had to do a ceserean. There is a weight chart online that will ask you your pre-pregnancy weight and then tells you how much you should gain (it's obviously a range). It told me that going up to 186-196 would be the range that I would shot for. So, that's about 25 pounds, which will be ok for me. hopefully I'll lose it quickly. I"ll let you know how the dr goes Monday! Keep up the good work. I think 170 is great! I weighed this week and I'm up to 173, so I'm slowly creeping up! :)

by the way...if you type in "pregnancy weight calculator" in google it will show you the websited with the weight calculators if you're interested. :)

Thanks julie. It is great to talk to some one kinda in the same situation. My Hubby keeps telling me not to worry about it....But it isn't his body :)
That calculator is neat. It says right now average for me is 174-177, and at the end 182-188. So I think I can do that!
I am under that now, so that is hopefull! That gives me 12-18 lbs to gain over the next 16.5 weeks. That is totally doable (I hope!) Good luck at your appointment.
Do you know what you are having? What is your DD?
I am do 07-31-08 with another GIRL!

Name: julepowers | Date: Apr 4th, 2008 7:22 PM
oh Wow! I'm exactly one month behind you. My DD is August 31/Sept 1st. My dr gave me two since I did fertility treatments and they are pretty sure of the two days that I conceived. They're just not sure which on it is. Congrats on your little girl. You must have been so excited to find out. We have our big appointment on April 22 and my DH really wants to know, but I want to hold off. However, over the past few weeks I've been getting antsy and I am beginning to want to know. It's still a surprise, right! Plus, it's so much easier to register and people get excited to buy you frilly things or boy things. I'm just so excited overall, I can't wait. Is this your first? It's my first and it's so amazing!

That was my Due date with my First DD. She was born 08-31-06. I couldnt wait! I HAD to know :) But I work at an Ultrasound Facility........so I knew at 13 weeks with both.

Hey Julie~ Just checking to see how are you doing?
How is the weight maintaining :) I have now bumped my cardio up to 6 days a week. And I am alternating between 30 mins - 45 mins each time. And weight training every other day. Hoping I can stick with it. My next Dr visit is 05-01-08....Hoping that I can be at 170-172.

Hey girls I too like this question!! Before I got pregnant I was dieting pretty hard and lost around 35 pounds, still overweight, but healthier. Then we got pregnant and I have been trying so hard not to put on massive weight with this pregnancy. I am now at 17 weeks and have put on a whole 2 pounds. My doc is thrilled with this, he said I will probably be one of those woman that end up weighing less after having the baby. I honestly have just been eating healthy no dieting so much but I have restricted myself to no caffeine, no chocolate, lots of water all day long, and lots of fruits and veggies. I splurge occasionally but still stick with a pretty balanced diet. I also am doing minimum exercise right now, alot of walking is all the doc will let me do because I am very high risk due to so many miscarriages in the past. I hope I can keep up this trend with the weight and keep my gain down. Best of luck to everyone!!!!!!!!

Welcome~ It is nice to be able to talk to other prego's going thru the same thing!! 2 lbs at 17 weeks is GREAT! And wow. Congratz on the 35lbs before you got pregnant! Now that I am pregnant I wish I would have lost more before I got pregnant, that would have made it a lot easy durning.....but oh well. We got pregnant on our 2nd cycle trying, that was only 1 month after getting my IUD removed (Which is why I was overweight) I started weight watchers 2 months before getting prego, but quit as soon as I found out I was and just kinda stuck at my weight. Now I am REALLY trying to be good. I give in sometimes. You have too or it would be to to to hard! But I always work out harder after I have been bad :) Good luck, sounds like your doing great!

Hi lukenjess, i know how you feel. With my first pregnancy i gained 12 pounds in 12wks! I was so shocked, but then i lost the baby. 3 mnths after i fell pg again and with this one have lost weight. Im 14 and a half weeks and have so far lost 6lbs, possibly more since i was weighed at 12wks. I havent been eating much at all because my appetite has just disappeared and im just eating when hungry. The baby is still getting plenty, but im getting less, i think thats how it works. Im quite hapy to loose weight tho! x x

Hi! Things are going great Mom of 1. I had my dr appt on Monday and I only gained one pound since my last one four weeks ago. I'm 20 weeks and holding strong! Ughhh..it's hard, but worth it. My DH came to the appt and was telling the dr that I wasn't eating enough and he was worried that the dr was suggesting that I maintain my weight. He thought I should be eating more. THe dr told him that this is a BIG misnomer and that women shouldn't eat for two. So, he felt a bit better after we left. But between him and my mother in law, they make me feel like I'm starving the baby, which is NOT the case. I eat at least 300 calories more than usual, but very healthy food. The dr told me that my weight was great, so I waas really happy. He also told me that I would be ok only gaining 15-20 pounds. I am at 14 pounds at 20 weeks, so that might be a bit low for me, but I'll try. How are you doing? How are you feeling?

Name: mom_of_1 | Date: Apr 10th, 2008 12:17 PM
Julie That is GREAT! I hope my next Dr apt goes that well! :) I am bouncing between 170 and 172. Each day is a little different. The Dr scale is about 1-2 lbs heavier then mine so I am going off mine.I have upped my cardio now to hopefully help stay where I am at. I do m/w/f 45 mins cardio plus weight training(light). Then T/Thr/Sat I do 60mins cardio and then try to rest on Sundays. It is really keeping my energy up and I have been sleeping better at night! I haven't changed my eating, Still lots of Fruits and some veggies(they have always been hard for me!) and just a cave in here and there....... So my goal now is not to go over 180 by my DD. and if I do I am hoping it is only like 183-185 MAX! So I have 8-10 lbs for the next 16 weeks............I hit the 6 month mark yesterday! YAY!

Name: julepowers | Date: Apr 10th, 2008 8:51 PM
That's great! You are doing so well. My scale seems to be 2 pounds lighter than the docs as well! Too funny . I think that they're messing with us. I weight 176 at night and then 173 on my scale in the am. I really don't want to go over 185, but I'm so scared that I will. I would be PSYCHED if 185 was it. When is your next dr appointment?

i personally think that this is the one point in our whole lives where we should not obsess over how much weight we are putting on or how many calories are in everything we eat. at the end of the day its going to do the baby more harm than good by trying to lose weight whilst pregnant, or trying to barely put any on. the most important thing is that the baby is able to get all his/her nutrients, whether that means the mother has to pile a bit of weight on then so be it. i have not checked the scales since i found out i was pregnant and i don't intend to, i eat the same anyway, the way i see it is that if i start obsessing over how much i weigh then the whole enjoyable pregnancy would turn into a constant worry about my weight. obviously an extreme weight gain is a bit worrying but at the end of the day as long as you eat healthily and do some exercise, there shouldnt be a huge problem. whats the point obsessing about it when you are pregnant because then the obsession would get even worse after you have the baby!!! the way i see pregnancy is that its best to just embrace the changes to your body and learn to stay healthy and happy, not letting superficial things take over.

Name: julepowers | Date: Apr 11th, 2008 10:10 AM
Cat24-Mom of 1 and I are NOT obsessing. We are merely trying to eat healthy and stay at a healthy weight. You are COMPLETELY wrong that it's healthier for the baby to eat a lot. According to my dr the more weight you gain, the more likely you are to have gestational diabetes, a larger baby perhaps causing a ceserean rather than vaginal delivery and there is NO need to gain an extreme amount of weight during pregnancy. Both of us are eating healhty and not trying to LOSE weight. If you read our posts you would see that we are tyring to mantain over a few weeks or only gain what's appropriate. I resent the fact that you make us sound like we are causing our babies harm. Everyone is different and both mom of 1 and i started our pregnancies a bit over our normal range of weight. Therefore, again, according to my dr it is completely healthy to only gain 15-20 pounds during our pregnancies. I'm sorry to lay into you, but I have experienced your negetivity in other threads in this forum and I think that it's terrible that you make people feel badly about themselves or how they are treating their child. If we didn't care, NONE of us would be on this website writing to each other. Please take your negetive attiude elsewhere!

Julie. Thank you for standing up for me in your post to CAT24.
and CAT24! HOW DARE YOU COME ON HERE AND BE SO FREAKING RUDE! Seriously! If you would read all of the posts and not just the title you would see that we are doing what is BEST FOR OUR BABIES AND US!!!! by maintaining a healthy weight and diet. I understand you have a right to your opinon but honestly it is not needed here. So you can take your Rudeness elsewhere. This post is for support and encouragement and your negativity is GREATLY UNAPPRECIATED! So Thank you and Goodbye!

Hi Julie :) Now that we got that out of the way! LOL!
And just for the record, My baby is doing AWESOME! just did a quick sono yesterday and she is RIGHT on track for weight, height and HB. So there CAT24!
My next Dr apt isnt til 05-01-08...........so 3 more weeks of holding strong. Today the scale was 171, yipee! So If I can keep it to 2-3 lbs gain from last appt I will be very happy. That will put me at about 173 at 27 weeks and 2 days. So I am really hopefully. That will put me at a great weight for the last trimester!
You are doing awesome! I am the same way, about 3-4 lbs heavier at bedtime then first thing in the morning, Kinda glad though, that means our little beans are using up all the food and nutirents we have taken in durning the day :)

Name: julepowers | Date: Apr 11th, 2008 11:48 AM
Hi mom of 1. Glad to hear that your sonogram went so well!!! That's such great news. You are doing terrific! I can't wait for my April 22nd sonogram. I want to see the baby again since we haven't seen him/her since Feb. It's so exciting. YOu know the sex right? We are still deciding if we want to find out, but I think that we end up finding out on April 22nd. I cna't believe how great your doing with your weight! At 27w3d 173 is awesome. I know I'll be well above that. Probably somehwere in the range of 180, so you're doing better than me :) Have you been winded while doing your cardio at all? I feel like i weight 300 pounds sometimes when I do the stair master at a low speed. It's nuts to feel so different!

Name: Cat24 | Date: Apr 11th, 2008 12:04 PM
julepowers there was no need to lay into me for my personal opinion. i never actually said a woman should put loads of weight on during her pregnancy so ive no idea where you got that from. indeed i think it should be seen as a positive thing (nothing negative at all) that women should for once in their lives not worry too much about what they are eating and how much weight they might gaining. i think i actually put something like 'obviously if you gain a lot then it is a problem' so i at no point condoned pregnant women to get exceptionally large for the 'heck of it'. you have obviously taken offence to it, then so be it. you can 'lay into me' all you want. i said at the start and throughout my post that it was my personal opinion, i said as long as the woman is healthy and happy thats the main thing. its just a shame you seem to have taken it completely out of context and twisted it into something negative. perhaps re-reading my post might help.

Name: julepowers | Date: Apr 11th, 2008 1:05 PM
Cat24-This is the last post that I'm going to send on the subject and I'm a bit mad at myself for even engaging you in further conversation. That being said, my two points are...1. As mom of 1 stated. This is a supportive forum. Why do you feel the need to come on to THIS particular thread about weight and post a comment against what everyone else is sharing with one another. It just seems like you want to be a nudge. As the proverb goes...If you don't have anythign nice to say, don't say anything at all. 2. Maybe you don't realize your negetivity, but using the words "obsess" and saying "more harm than good to your baby" is EXTREMELY negetive and makes one feel that they are doing something BAD to their baby by trying to control their weight gain. My dr told me to watch my weight and said that I'm doing outstanding with maintaining it thus far. I'm not sure if you have a medical degree or not, but I'll take my dr's advice over yours. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy. I wish you and your baby nothing but health and happines. However, I'm not going to answer anymore posts. I've said what I need to say and I'd like to get back to the reason why I'm here...to speak to a supportive and friendly person, like Mom of 1, and the other girls on the thread.
