I went to get a vag u/s at 5 weeks 4 days past conception and there was no heartbeat detected. I was devasted and they told me to expect a miscarriage. I'm taking a very unscientific poll...when did you see your little one's heartbeat on vag. u/s? I'm just interested in the vag. u/s because doppler is far less senstive so it would be later that the hb would be detected. I'm going back in next week just to confirm that there is no hb and just want to know what to likely expect. Thanks all! Very sad.

I'm so sorry! I never was scheduled for my first (vag) ultrasound until I was at least 8 weeks. I'm kind of surprised that they did one that early for you and (if I'm remembering right) it's not until 5 weeks + that the heart even starts beating. Maybe it was too soon? I really hope you're able to see a heartbeat at your next appointment and will be thinking of you!

According to what my doctor told me, you really can't count on a heartbeat via ultrasound until 8 weeks- 5 weeks is VERY early. It can sometimes be seen earlier, but not always. The Doppler usually does not detect it until 12 weeks. Hang in there, it's quite possible your baby is still ok. In some instances, women ovulate late (rather than day 14 of a 28 day cycle) and are not really as far along as calculated. Good luck, when do you go back to the doctor?

Please don't worry yet!!!! At 5 wks is only the beginning to when you can start seeing the heartbeat. Most doc's wont even do an u/s untill 8 weeks because thats when everything is big enough to determine...I cant beleave they would even tell u that. I have seen so many stories of women who were told they could expect m/c and they trusted their gut and turned down d-n-c only for their baby to be fine. I know it is hard to do but act as if that u/s didn't happen because it doesn't count......wait for your next one to find out! I am sorry you are going thru this! I will pray for u and your lil ones health.

countrymom, is it possible you can wait more than a week to go back in? They really didn't want to give me an u/s until 8 weeks, but I was in the ER with spotting so they checked for an ectopic pregnancy. Would you feel better going in a week to see a slightly bigger peanut with no heartbeat, or waiting without knowing anything until 8 weeks when it's an even bigger peanut with a definite heartbeat? Sticky baby dust!

My u/s is scheduled for Wed. I"m not holding out much hope because I'll be 6 weeks past conception which is really 8 weeks pregnant. The hb can be seen by 4 weeks past conception with a senstive u/s machine done vag. I am so sad but I know this baby making business is not an exact science. I'll try again in a couple of months. My hcg was 23,000 last week so it wasn't horrible but not terrific either. If a doctor has a machine that is not quite as strong they probably wait until 8 weeks at least this is what I"m thinking. When the hb starts seems to be all over the map and I think that is probably from the different ways in which it can be measured. Still if you had an (vag) u/s like I did at 5 weeks 4 days past conception with no hb only to see it later do let me know. Thanks!!

I saw the hb via internal ultrsound around 7 weeks from LMP. My earlier one, I think about 5.5 weeks from LMP did not pick it up. You should be measuring from LMP not conception.

Ive always had my 1st ultrasound around 5 weeks b/c i have a history if miscarriages. With my daughter the only thing there was the yolk sac. Not even the fetus was visible. Now im 11 weeks preg and seen this heartbeat at 6 weeks. Heard it at 10 weeks. But if you were almost 6 weeks past conception that would put you at almost 8 weeks pregnant. The heartrate should definately be visible by then.

Yep, I'm 8 weeks pregnant. Newbaby, if you don't mind my asking do they know why you miscarried? I'm hoping that after this m/c, and I know to expect it, that I"ll be able to conceive again. I'm 42 so my eggs are getting a bit long in the tooth. I'll check back tomorrow to say bye for now....Newbaby what should I expect with a m/c at 4-5 weeks? Bad cramping? Will I "see" anyting? Will it last for longer than the regular AF?

I was 11 weeks when i had my miscarriage but the fetus gestational age was only 6 weeks. It was a missed miscarriage. Mine happened pretty quick once it actually started. I was having bad back pain ( my cramps are always in the back, never in the front) and pretty bad spotting. I went to the er and was told it was told i may or not miscarry. They did a ultrasound n thats when it was discovered the fetus was only 6 weeks and there was no heartbeat. They were going to release me to go home and wait it out. When i stood up to get dressed it was like my insides came out. There was so much blood and such. They put me n a room and i bled badly all night. d to sign for a blood transfusion if i needed one. Luckily i didnt. I passes huge clots and all the other material. I was in severe pain and had to be on morphine. It was worse then labor. I had a d and c the next morning to ensure it was all cleared out. They gave me a prescription for darocet and a med that makes your uterus contract to finish cleaning it out. I slept for 3 days when i got home and bled for several weeks afterwards. The fetus is the size of a poppie seed at this stage so you wont see anything. I hope it goes ok for you!

Wow, it's worse than I thought. Ok. Thanks.

I saw the heartbeat at 4.5 weeks (6.5 weeks preggers), through a vag. u/s. I would not give up hope yet. Good luck:)

hi countrymom....i posted a reply for you on the pregnancy loss forum about my experience with miscarriage. are you positive how far along you are? because they told me i was going to miscarry with my daughter because her heart beat must have started later or something because at 6 weeks i think it was, it was extremely slow and they said it was not a viable pregnancy and they said to expect miscarriage when i went to the ER (i had a subchorionic hematoma which is why i went in to the hospital...a totally different subject though). But she ended up being fine, i went to the doctor several days later and her heartbeat was up to 160! and now she is 7 months old. not trying to give you false hope either...but just be sure that they know for sure before you agree to a d&c or something...especially if you havent had any signs of natural miscarriage yet. hang in there, i hope for you that you have good news at your next ultrasound.

First of all Newbaby, I'm so sorry for your loss. And Countrymom, don't give up hope just yet. As far as a miscarriage goes...I had one back in March. My experience wasn't as bad as newbaby's. I decided to do it natural and just passed some clots and bled for about 4weeks with some minor cramping. It was only heavy like half a day. then just spotting for the rest of the time. I got pregnant again pretty quickly and I am now 12 weeks pregnant and everything is going great this time around. Hope this helps you.

Thanks for your kind words. I had the bad news confirmed today. I hope to be back to this forum quickly and will see you again although I know you will all be on your way to the 2nd tri forum. I learned from my sonagrapher today that they CAN see the hb at 5.5 weeks gestational because of the senstivity of their equipment. At least I won't have to wait long once I do get pregnant again to learn if its viable. The deal is I have to m/c first, then have one cycle more and then we can try. I'm still nursiing though so not sure how that will affect my cycle. I got pregnant this time with my first period post delivery 7.5 months ago. I'm hoping that I can get back here again in late September. Guess time will tell. Good luck all! I'll say hello once I'm back.

I am so sorry for your loss, I am in a similar situation. Today I pray for the best. I am 6 wks along and they did a vaginal ultrasound and they didn't see a flicker of the heartbeat, and yes , I could've ovluated later and this week, I hope my hcg levels are normal and all will go well. This is my "first" baby and my husband and I are so excited. We really want this baby and I am trying to stay postive. I have heard good outcomes and some not, I just hope for the best. Thanks girls for your support and good luck with you trying again countrymom. I hope I get GOOD NEWS TODAY!
