Hi Everyone, I posted this question under the breastfeeding section, but I'm hoping I might get some more replies here- I'm wondering how many times a day your 9-10 month olds are breastfeeding? I know every baby is different, but there must be a 'typical' amount they feed in 24hrs, and I can't seem to find any answers anywhere else. I'm getting worried that my lo isn't drinking often enough. He usually BF's first thing in the morning around 6:00-7:00am, then he usually nurses again at 12:30-1:00, then again at 5:30, and he nurses a little just before bed at 7:30. Some days he won't nurse at the 12:30-1:00 time, so he goes from 7am, until 4:30 or 5:00 without a feeding. He will now only take one breast each feed, and I know I don't have an overly abundant supply of milk. He unlatches himself, and won't re-latch no matter how hard I try. He eats 3 regular meals a day now, but doesn't get any other form of liquid other than a tiny bit of water from a training sippy, which he hardly drinks any of because he doesn't really know how to drink from the sippy (he doesn't know how to drink from a bottle either). So, in your experience, is your 9-10 month old drinking/BF'ing more often than this? Is this normal? Thank you in advance for any help! :) ↓
My lo was the same as yours. He self weaned at 11.5 months. Is he getting a tooth or anything that would make him not want to nurse? I started my lo one homo milk at 11 months. I gave it to him in a straw cup because he couldn't get the hang of a sippy cup. I didn't want to start the bottle because who wants to wean twice LOL. He is 16.5 months old now and will only drink his milk from a straw. It is much easier for them to learn and better for there teeth. All you can really do is offer if he doesn't want it chances are he doesn't need it. He is starting to get more nutrition from food now that he's on solids. He will not starve himself or dehydrate himself . If he is teething then he may pick up where he left off in a few days. Just offer more water and the breast if he doesn't want it then he 's probably not thirsty. I hope this has helped you a little. Good lUCK WITH IT. ↑
Thank you countrymom! I feel better knowing that other babies have done this too. Although, yesterday he went on a 'nusing strike'. He only nursed at 6:00am, and flat out refused to latch for the rest of the day! I was so worried. He won't take a bottle, refused the sippy (I'll try a straw one now), and wouldn't drink out of a regular cup either. I do think he is getting another tooth, so I'm thinking that could be what's causing it. I hope today goes better! I just know if I only drank once in 24hrs...I'd be SO thirsty! Did yours ever go on a nursing strike altogether? How did you teach him to drink from the straw? ↑
Yes did go on nursing strikes. Sometimes if I ate spicy food or sometimes I never really knew why. He just seemed to figure the straw out. Just make sure it doesn't take much to get the liquid out. If they have to suck to hard sometimes they will give up. I have heard the bf babies take to the straw better then bottle fed. Don't give up though. You are doing so well to have made it this far. I would also put expressed milk in the cup . I don't know how old he is 9 or 10 months. I started mine on a little homo at 11 months because like yours he didn't seem to interested in nursing for a while. And I was always worried trhat he wasn't getting enough at the end because he just wouldn't nurse more then 1 or 2 times. You may have a self weaner too. It is nice in some ways but after I was sad because I wasn't ready. I miss that bonding now. But now there are so many more things we di instead. Good luk to you both. ↑
my baby is almost 8 months, i have the same question. i'd say she breastfeeds about 6 times during the day. She doesn't wake up at night to actually feed,if she does wake up i am pretty sure it is just to get back to sleep. ↑
Hey Peachtree! Nicve to hear from you! Although I am formula feeding now (good for you for still breatfeeding, lucky little one you have) I totally agree with countrymom that your situation sounds totally normal. My daughter is great with the sippy cup, but Playtex makes a grea cup with a straw that she got the hang of in less then 5 minutes! i got it at Sobey's, I suppose they have it elsewhere also...but they can get a lit of liqued faster through a straw then the sippy cups...she loves it and her water intake has just tripled over night! ↑
My dd is a little over 8 months and still nurses about 6 times day and has a bottle 1-2 times while I am at work. But, she only nurses for a bout 5-8 minutes total. So I got to where after 3 minutes I will switch her to the other side to make it kind of even. She goes on strikes when she does not feel well. Tooth, virus etc. About a month ago she would hardly eat from bottle or breast for 2 weeks! Turns out she had a uti. I started her on a sippy and she couldn't get the hang of it either. Then I took the little stopper thing out from the inside so the water/juice would drip out and she caught on that way. Also, your lo may just be weaning like countrymom's lo. My ds weaned at 10 months. Good luck! ↑
