bleeding while pregnant
Name: Gina
Question: I just found out last week that I am 7 weeks pregnant with my 3 child. A couple of days ago I started spotting/bleeding it alternates from heavy to light. I called my MD and they said if it is a miscarriage I just need to wait it out until I stop. I am going crazy but I have not felt any abdominal cramps just an occasional low back ache. If anyone has any suggestions let me know. ?

Answer: There is nothing that you can do about this, except try and relax. Bleeding in first trimester is normal - some even get thier period in the first 3 months. As long as you don't have any cramps you have nothing to worry about. Just try to take it as easy as you can and put your feet up and rest as much as you can. If you start getting cramps you should call the doctor go just go to the hospital for them to have you checked out. But until you get those cramps don't worry about a thing ;o) You will be in my thoughts.  =

Answer: I'm slightly in the same situation. I'm not sure if I'm pregnant but I think I am. I have had mild cramps for 10 days but not the kind associated with a misscarriage. Also, I bled a few drops today. But it's very light. Could I still be pregnant? =

Answer: In answer to my own question-I had an ectopic prenancy which ruptured on Saturday afternoon.I was cramping really bad so my husband took me to the emergency room and then surgery. they ended up taking some of my fallopian tube. they were all really nice but now i am living with the after math. I just tell myself things could've been alot worse. =

Answer: I am 5 1/2 weeks preggo and started bleeding brownish reddish yesterday and it hasn't stoped since. This is my second child and I didn't bleed at all with my first that's why I'm freekin'..... They gave me an ultrasound today but it's way to early in the pregnancy to see anything but the sac (tiny black dot) so I have to have blood work to tomorrow to check my hormones. This is crazy....... I wish they could just tell me everything is fine already!! Does anyone know how long this is suppose to last???Thanks =

Answer: Hi Ladies!! I didn't realize there were so many problems untill I came across this site...although I think this site is VERY helpful & useful!!! OK here's my situation.....I think I am about 5 weeks preg....not sure, just going on what I'm feeling & what I think.....but I started my period Jan. 30, right on time?!? But still....very light period, hardly any cramps at all, did not have any pms, b*tching..etc...etc...the 1st day of my period was a darker red color, then it stopped & came back way later that night. It's now day 3 & it's almost gone!! My period is normaly 4-5 days. But whats making me think I'm preg is, for the past 3 weeks or so my stomach has started to feel different, like harder mainly around the belly button area, certian food smells are starting to bother me, like meat cooking for one. I'm peeing more offten too, but everything else is normal (bm). I don't know what to do....my stomach is getting harder more & more every day!!! I was preg 8 years ago...got my period the night I concevied (like 4-5 hours after). When I was only 4 months, I looked like I was about 8 months!!! Can anybody explain this?? Had same experience or close to it? Sorry this is sooo long =) =

But whatever you do don't stress. This is the most impotant time for you and your baby Im sure you"ll be just fine. And keep me posted .So please tell me you will not worry. =

Answer: This is my 2nd and I will be 12 weeks tomorrow. I have had what I call pink mucus only when I wipe. I have had no cramps or spotting or bleeding. Nothing comes out, it is only there when I wipe and never on a consistant basis. I haven't been able to hear the heartbeat yet, but I am going for my 1st sonogram of Friday. I already have a little belly. Could someone please tell me if they have had anything like this and help to rest my mind. I seem to be more nervous than excited about the sonogram. =

Answer: I found out i was pregnant with a home pregnancy test. [4 weeks pregnant.] I started bleeding lightly on thursday. It got heavier and I went to see my midwife. She looked at the bleeding and said I wasn't hemmoraging. I have had cramps and passed a few small blood clots. I am trying to accept this and not let myself feel it emotionally. Is there ANY chance i could be pregnant? Would the baby be okay if I am? Please write to me. This is my second planned pregnancy, and I am just heart broken. Also, they took a blood sample from my arm to check for the pregnancy horomone. It was only 12. i will go back on monday to see if it s going up or down. Right now i don't know exactly what's happening and its only saturday. Someone to talk to about this would be a blessing. =

Answer: Hi, I'm in the same situation, but I have had cramps since before I found out I was pregnant. Now I am 6 weeks. I had a very light brown discharge and then it went red for a bit. Now it is back to brownish mucus but only when I wipe...I don't want to go to the docs coz I am afraid they will tell me to wait it out. What are the chances that I am losing my baby? =

Answer: I can't believe how many people are in the same situation as me, and how many people have spoken to doctors/midwifes etc and have still come away not knowing what is going to happen to their baby!! I am 51/2 weeks pregnant and i started to bleed on friday, that evening i went to a&e and i had blood tests, scans the lot then was sent home now i don't know what is going to happen? am i loosing my baby or is it just embedding loss or something just as normal in early pregnancy. i have looked on the internet and their are so many reasons why you can bleed, if you have no pains in your tummy, the tip if your shoulder, or pain when going to the toilet, i really don't think that there is any immedate danger. good luck to everyone =

Answer: Well, I have read all submissions an d I have a very different situation. It sounds simulair to some. I am guessing that I am 5-6 weeks preg. I started bleeding 14days ago. My husband and I have not used anything for over a year, so we started getting concerned with not being able to get preg. I talked to the OB and had blood tests done, said I was not ovulating, and she wanted to start me on Clomid.....but before I had to start that I needed to be on my period for 3 days. I had started to discharge a b rownish color, I was told that I needed to start this on the 3rd day but to take a preg test 1st. I did, and the positive line came our REALLY light, I also took one the next morning...same thing. I read the instructions and looked everything up online and is says NOT MATTER WHAT COLOR IF THERE IS A POSITIVE LINE YOU ARE PREG. I have continues to bleed....some spotty and red and early on brown. I was told that I was having an early miscarriage. My HCG has been tested for the last 2 weeks and it has continued to double even though I am still spotting. I have something called Luteal Phase Defect....which means that I am not producing enough progesterone, and we are hoping that I can hold the baby until the uteris takes over at 8-9 weeks. So everyone that is having bleeding...get your HCG tested, you feel like a pin cushion, but you have some answers as far as baby and if you are holding or miscarrying....mine so far is a fighter thank god. good luck to all of you and if you have any quewstions that I can answer you may also email me @ Gdhdancer01@aol.com =

Answer: My husband and I have been trying for our second child for a while now with no luck but in the last week I've started having many pregnancy symptoms. Then yesterday I started to bleed, it was very slight, it was a brownish color and it only happened once when I went to the bathroom. I figured this was implantation bleeding, it happened again today with some slight cramping and right before it happened I got very sick to my stomach. Has anyone had anything like this early in pregnancy? Is it alright? =

Answer: I just found out I was pregnant. I had a miscarriage in Oct and had not had a period yet, just 1 day of light bleeding in Dec and Jan. Last Sunday I started bleeding a lot. I assumed it was just my period. Tuesday I passed a few large clots and called the doctor. I went in on Wed. and had an examination and blood drawn. The doc called me 2 hours later to tell me I was pregnant. I went straight to the emergency room and they sent me to OB. They did an ultrasound but did not see anything but some tissue. They also did blood work. I got the results the next day. I only had HCG level of 16 at 10am and then 18 by 4pm. They drew my blood again 48 hours later and it only came up at 25. They Said I'm probably having a miscarriage but my cervix is still closed. They really do not have answers for me. I'm suppose to go in again on wed. for more blood work and another ultrasound. Has anyone had this happen? The docs won't give me a straight answer. I'm on bed rest for the next week. Any suggestions???  =

Answer: I am 16 weeks pregnany and I had heavy bleeding too.Now I have a few drops now and then.By the midwife we could hear the baby's heart adn with an echo that the baby was okay. This is also my 3 pregnancy and I bleeded during everyone of them. And my first 2 bleedings started also at 7 weeks. So don't give uo.Bleeding doesnt necessirly means misscarrying. But I do know what u r going through. =

Answer: I was just in the emergency room all day Sunday with bleeding. According to my last menstral period I should be 9 weeks pregnant. They did an ultrasound that confirmed pregnancy, but I'm only 7 weeks. The baby was fine but I am still bleeding, rather heavy with no cramping. I am so scared that I'm going to lose the baby, even though I already heard it's heart beat. It's good to know other people are out there with me. I can't stop crying. =

Answer: I am just 8 weeks pregnant and on 22nd Feb went into hospital as I was bleeding heavily and passing clots. When I arrived in hospital I passed three very large clotts with no pain, but assumed I had miscarried and the doctor confirmed this. I returned to the hospital on Thursday where they found a heartbeat, I am obviously very confused, relieved and anxious as they could not eplain the cause of the bleeding.  =

Answer: Hannah, I'm so sorry to hear about your miscarriage. And Gina, who began these posts, I was also sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy. I hope both of you go on to have healthy pregancies and babies in the near future. I have been reading this column with interest, and have noted that although many people write in with their own problem, not as many seem to respond to other people's posts. I'm afraid I don't have any answers for why we are all bleeding in early pregnancy (I am 5.5 weeks and begun brown spotting yesterday which has not ceases for over 12 hours) and perhaps not meany others do either, which is why we all write in and perhaps don't receive feedback. It is comforting to know I am not alone, however, while I wait for the results of my second HCG bloods. Ultrasoumd this morning showed nothing as I'm too early. No cramping yet, and continue to feel dull ache in uterus that I have had for the past 5 weeks, so all I can do is hope. I will get the Dr to test for vaginal infections this afternoon, and check my cervix is still closed, and that is about all that I am in control of. I hope we can all find some peace of mind while we wait for some answers. =

Answer: Gina, I just want to tell you to stay calm. I found out I was 6 weeks pregnant and then 3 days later started to spot with old blood. The next day it got heavier, only when going to the bathroom, and I was clotting a bit. I completely thought I was having a miscarriage. I went to the ER they ran tests and said everything looked normal and my horomone levels were at 320. I went to the docs about four days later and he did all of the same tests and said everything looked normal except the bleeding and he took more blood and said that he was not optimistic. I walked out crying and called the next day for my horomone levels and they doubled. I was so shocked and so excited but now I have to go back today and do it all over again to make sure that they keep going up. This has been an emotional rollarcoaster. Just stay calm and see your doctor and ask questions. I am still nervous because I am still bleeding when I wipe and it has been 10 days of this. I am pretty much laying around until we figure out what is going on. =

This is my 8th pregnancy and It seems like I should know what to expect and/or what to feel .. but it's all so different ! I found out I'm 5 weeks preg. BUT started to bleed this past weekend .. they say my levels are moving up but I'm still worried. So far no pain however, time can only tell. I'm unsure as to how long this last's. Answer: Hi. My husband and I waited for 14 months to have a baby. We're excited to have one. I have regular menstruation period every 20th of the month. But this February I haven't got my period. Started yesterday I am bleeding but I can feel its not my period cause i am not feeling sick as to compare when i have my period. But is it possible that I am pregnant? Is this a pregnancy bleeding or is it my period? How could I know. I took a home pregnancy test last February 24 but the result is negative? When should I take pregnancy test? Thanks and more power. =

Answer: I am 7 weeks 5 days along. I had my first prenatal visit 2 days ago. The doctor said everything looks good. We saw the baby's heartbeating on the ultrasound but couldn't hear it yet. I go back next week for another one and the bloodwork. My concern is that I have been spotting since my exam. It is dark brown, only tiny pieces when I urinate and only a few times when I wipe. Nothing on my panties, no period like cramps, or unusual pains. Doctor said everything is fine when I called. I am still concerned. This is my first baby. Can anyone relate to this? =

Answer: I am about 10 weeks and I started to bleed yesterday, but I don't have cramps. Anway, this scared me so I went to ER. They took my blood and did a pap test. After doing this the doctor said he couldn’t really see anything because my cervix was closed (whatever that means) So they scheduled an ultra sound for Monday. They said that there is a 50/50 chance that I will miscarry and that if I’m going to miscarry there is nothing I or they can do to stop it. =( I’m just trying to think positive and you, as well as anybody else experiencing this, should too. =

Answer: I am 8 weeks pregnant. I started to spot lightly and went to the ER. Ultrasound showed the baby with a normal hearbeat. I am now bleeding - it seems like a lot when I go to the bathroom, passing clots, cramping, and have a back ache. Wednesday there was a hearbeat and now it's Saturday and I've been passing clots. Has this happened to anyone, and if so, did you have the baby? I just want it to do whatever it's going to do. The waiting is trying me. Thanks. =

Answer: BrayBaby........ I too have had those same thing happen to me. I had my bloodtests and sonogram and everything seemd to be fine and healthy. I was very upset and concerned about it still, my doctor checked my cervix and it is closed. She explained to me that your cervix becomes very spongue like and soft during pregnancy and the littlest irritation could cause what she called bloodly mucus when I wipe. She said she could see some during the check-up. I am now 13 weeks and 5 days (this is my 2nd) and I have had no blood for a little over 2 weeks straight now. Thank God everything seems to me ok. Ask your doctor about your cervix being closed and how soft it seems to be. Hopefully everything will go smoothly for you. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers along with everyone else. =

Answer: um.. i might be 5 1/2 week pregnant and yesterday i started bleeding light and then heavy... well i was having mild cramps but my mom and my grandma both have normal periods for 3 months were their first.. what is going on? =

Name: ~S~ | Date: March 10, 2005, 17:51
Answer: There's not much you can do, except "try" not to worry. I know that must be almost impossible, but stressing out about it could possibly make matters worse. Before I found out I was pregnant I had a normal period, little did I know, I was already 3 weeks pregnant. After I found out, I continued to bleed lightly, pretty much spotting. Sometimes it was a lot heavier and sometimes it was hardly visible, but it lasted up until my 8th week. Of course I was worried, so I brought it to my doctors attention. She did some tests on me and asked me if I had any abdominal cramping. I did have cramping, but not severly. She suggested that there MIGHT be a chance of miscarriage so she ordered an ultrasound for me. I went, and it turns out that everything is okay. Apparently some ladies bleed throughout their pregnancy, some only bleed on the days they would have gotten their period and some ladies don't at all....Therefore, you may have nothing to worry about.  =

Answer: hi,i am too 7 weeks and some days. the other (tues.) i went for an vaginal ultrasound and saw heartbeat. friday morning i started light spotting only when i wiped. it went from light to a little heavier but never with heavy cramps only mild pms feelings, like if i was getting my period. called the doctor he said that spotting can have a 25% risk of miscarriaige. he said to take it easy this weekend and come in for an ultrasound during the week. i had a pretty stressful week. so i don't know if it was caused by that. i'm a little worried. but still no heavy cramps. friends say to stay in bed all weeked.  =

Answer: i had a miscarriage not too long ago. when i had my miscarriage i didn't really have any abdominal pain until i actually miscarried. they only thing i can really ask you is can your bleeding/spotting soak up an enitire pad? then if so forsure you've miscarried or you might be having an ectopic pregnancy which means that the baby is in your tubes, and would have to either go under operation or take some medication to flush it out of your system.i don't know if this is going to help you at all but its somewhat of knowledge i guess. =

Answer: I had the same problem my Dr. said it could be that there is a peice of the fetus ' placenta being caught in the uterus, and if that is the case you may need a operation called Dialation and Curettage. It is a brief operation. the Dr. will widen the cervix after you are put to sleep and remove the stuck peice of placenta  =

Answer: Hi no answers I am in the same boat. I thought I had my period last week and was getting ready for another month on trying, but then 3 days ago I started bleeding again. I did a pregnancy test and it was positive, went to the doctor and they had the same result. If I am still pregnant I would be 5 weeks but my doctor says I have to wait a week to have my beta hcg tested again before they can tell me if I'm still pregnant or not. I haven't had any pain or cramping. Do you think I am still pregnant =

Answer: After reading all these posts i realise that i am having a simualr situation. I just found out a week n 1/2 ago that i am pregnant. This will be my 6 th pregnancy, but I have miasscarried two in the past. But at that point i didnt know I was even pregnant until my dr. had told me that I had misscarried. I have estimated that i am around 6-8 weeks pregnant. I have never experienced morning sickness with my other pregnancys so I dont know if that is what I am going through now. It started two nights ago. It almost felt like I was constipated, so i went to the bathroom and then nothing happend but the pains in my stomach were getting more intense. The next thing I knew the bathroom was spinning and i bracing my self against the wall fighting to stay conscious. I broke out in a cold sweat and had tears rolling down my face even though I wasnt crying. This lasted about 20 minutes and then slowly went away. I went straight to bed and went to sleep. then when I woke in the morning i wasnt in pain but mys stomach just felt "off", Then again last night I got the same feeling of being constapated and rushed to bathroom and agina nothing happened, i didnt get all spinny this time but the paind returned in my stomach and the were getting pretty bad and again it lasted about 20 minutes and again i went to bed and went to sleep. Early this morning I had sex with my husband and noticed when i went to the washroom that i was lightly bleeding, and I was feeling "off" again. Right now I am not bleeing or spinning, or in any pain just still have that "off" feeling. I have no idea what this is or if it is possiable thats its just morning sickness at night. I bleed alot in my last pregnancy but everything turned out fine and now i have a healthy happy almost 5 month old baby girl. Could that be the problem? being pregnant so soon after giving birth?? =

Answer: a pregnancy "not taking" means that your egg was fertilized by a sperm but it didn't attach to your uterus wall like it should. in that case, you will miscarry :(... but keep your hopes up that your baby will stick to your uterus.. i'm sort of going through the same thing because my hcg levels are low. can you take a blood test and see where your hcg count is?? =

Answer: I"m supposedly in my 6th week of pregnancy with my 1st baby, i called my OBGYN as soon as I found out that I was preg. she couldn't see my until i was 8 weeks preg. I've been spotting since a week after my home pregnancy test came out positive. It started as pink and now it's brown, yesterday and today it's getting heavier but it's still brown. I am VERY worried. I called my dr and they moved my appt up by a week. I still cannot wait another week go see her. Should I got to the hospital just to ease my nerves. but it sounds like everyone just has to wait and wait and wait. I'm really scared. Should I just wait to see the doctor? Please any advise will help. =

Answer: For all you ladies, who experience this I wish you all the best and hope that evrything turns out positive. I had a miscarriage Oct 7 2004. It started with really bad cramps , then light pinkish to brownish bleeding, then red blood like a normal bleeding. Trust me when your having a miscarriage there nothing to do but wait. I cried eveytime I went to the rest room and saw blood durning that time , I know that some women bleed with no problems. My girlfriend spotted durning her first four months and had a prefect little girl. All the best and good luck  =

Answer: I am a little over 9 weeks (gestation) pregnant now. 6 weeks into my pregnancy, I was cramping painfully but not so much where I couldn't stand-up. About 30 minutes after the cramping, I had a rush of bright red blood that lasted for about 2 hours. Enough blood to fill a heavy pad, but no tissue or clots. Then the bleeding slowed down to just a little spotting. Since I was out of town at the time, I waited 2 days before having an ultrasound. The utlrasound showed the baby's heart was still beating, and that I had not miscarried. Five days later, the exact same thing happened, except this time I passed a little stringy tissue. I didn't go in for an ultrasound just yet. Another five days later, I was again bleeding bright red blood but this time there was no cramping. However, I passed what I thought was the baby but it turned out to be a blood clot. They did another ultrasound and showed that the baby's heart was still beating and at a normal rate. The doctor told me she believes my fibroid tumor, located right below my uterus, was causing the bleeding but couldn't be 100% sure. My fibroid tumor grows with my pregnancy and right now it's the size of a canteloupe. Well, I was waiting for the bleeding to start up again five days later, but it didn't. I was so happy until 2 days after that, I did start bleeding but this time the bleeding was a dark brown color. I was also passing some bits and pieces of stringy tissue. No cramping though. I called the doctor's office and they think it could be my uterus lining just shedding some old blood. They said if the bleeding becomes heavy and bright, with major cramps, to call for an ultrasound. Each time I've bled, I think I've miscarried and each time it has proven untrue. I did have a miscarriage 3 years ago, at only 6 weeks into the pregnancy. It was extremely painful, and I could not stand-up. There was a large tissue that passed which was the baby. Because I haven't experience that with this pregnancy so far, I don't believe I've miscarried yet. Anyway, I'll continue to post my progress. Also, if you are bleeding and pregnant, make sure you get enough iron. My doctor drew my blood and said my blood count was way too low because of all the bleeding I've been having. So, not only do I take my prenatal vitamins everyday, I now have to take iron pills. For everyone who is questioning if they miscarried or not, there is no one answer. It's different for each individual. So the best advice I have is to go see your doctor and get tests/ultrasounds done. =

Answer: i am 12 weeks pregnant and started bleeding the other day, some of it was light pink and then it turned a brownish color, when i went to see my doctor i got so upset because she said i might be misscarriaging, i didn't know if that was possible being i had just had an ultra sound the day before and they told me everything looked great, she made me very upset. i hope i'm okay. Anyone else bleed at 12 weeks??? =

Name: Mary | Date: April 18, 2005, 13:21
Answer: I have had a very similar situation. I began bleeding heavily (red blood) at 10 weeks. I went into the doctor and he did an ultrasound and baby was fine. (yet he did not know why that happened.) Then, a few days ago, (at 15 weeks) I started bleeding brown blood. I went into the ER, they found the baby's heartbeat and sent me on my way. Just last night, I bled again (brown blood). I am going into the doctor tomarow to make sure everything is alright. From what they have told me, as long as blood isn't accompanied by cramping, baby is probably ok. Yet, it is still very difficult not to worry. ER doctor told me that bleeding very often is due to intercoase (even if you do not beed until 2 or 3 days later.) I wish you all the best. =

Answer: This is my first pregnancy. I am 13 weeks and having many of the same things happen as a lot of others. I had some brown discharge at 7 weeks - no cramping. Last week I went for the 12 week appt and the OB couldn't hear the heartbeat, but she told me she can only hear it at this stage about 50% of the time. She said in another week she would be able to hear it almost 100%. I have been having the brown discharge for about 2 and a half days now. A couple of times it was red. I should say that up to this point it has only been on the toilet paper, but at the same time I am going to the bathroom every 30 - 60 minutes to check things out. No real cramping, but every now and then I feel something - not really cramps. The worst part of the whole thing is that I am driving myself crazy. I know that if something is happening there is nothing they can do, this might sound cold, but I want to know what is going on 1 way or the other!!!! My doctor is not in the office until Monday so unless something gets worse I guess I will have to wait until then. To everyone that has left a comment I want to say thanks - it is nice to know that I am not the only one going a bit crazy while this is going on.  =

Answer: Just want to say that my heart goes out to each and everyone of you. The experience od a miscarraige was the worst in my entire life and I would not wish for any women to ever experience that. The wait is the worst, although I knew what was happening I was in great denial just remembering the whole thing makes me cry. But there is a ray of hope for all of us who has been there. I am now in my second trimester and things are going great I saw my little one on wednesday getting bigger and beauiful. Although you may feel (as I did) that it will not happen again have faith and it will. My doc also told me that it is not uncommon for some women to have a miscarriage then go on to have normal healthy pregnancies and babies. My prays are with you all. Take care =

Answer: Hi everyone, I felt a big weight off my shoulder after I read this sight. I realized that I'm not the only one going thur the bleeding. I'm now 15 weeks pregnant. This is my first pregnancy and I bleed without cramps every month for the last three months around the the same date for about an hour, it would be a pad full and then I would start spoting for about two hours. Everytime this happen my doctor would do a sonogram but the baby would be find. The doctor didn't really tell me why but the last time I bleed he put me on bed rest for two weeks, so far I have no bleeding but a lot of needle pain at the bottom of my belly. The doctor did all the test but he didn't find anything wrong, he told me my body is stretching. I wish everyone best wishes with the bundle of joy. =

Answer: Hi Ladies. I'm glad I found this site, but I am still concerned. This is my first pregnancy and I am 5 weeks. I started spotting brown blood last Tuesday only when I wipe. I have also had some blood clots. Last night I had a little red blood, but now it's back to brown. I went to the doctor last week twice and all my hormone levels are right on target. I have to go back to the doctor next Thursday for an ultra sound. I really hope everything is okay. I was happy to read Tina's post and it made me feel hopeful. I haven't had any cramps and my boobs are sore. In fact, they seem to be a little more sore today. I just keep praying that everything is okay. It just stinks that I have to wait until next week to find out!  =
