crying while asleep

My 4 1/2-month-old son cries in the middle of naps sometimes, without waking up. It's not just wimpering or fussing, it's a full-on wail. I go in and comfort him and can usually get him to settle back down. Yesterday, though, for one nap it happened every 5 minutes after he'd been alseep about an hour. From what I've read, this is normal, but does anyone know why babies do this? Do they dream? Are they having a hard time transitioning through sleep cycles? Is it gas? For some reason, it never happens at night.

I'm not sure what it is, but it is normal. My lo used to make this little high pitch squeal in the back of her throat, she did it for about a month when she was 3-4 months old and it would keep me awake because I was wondering what was wrong with her, but she never woke up and it never bothered her much. IMO I think it is gas, but who knows....

My dd is 18 month and she will whimper or cry while sleeping from time to time. For her it doesn't really last long and she settles right down. I think they can have bad dreams and that could be the cause.

My daughter does that too. Popping her soother back in her mouth has worked so far. She's much worse when she's sick or teething, but it doesn't seem to be diet related (at least for her). She's 10 months now and she has started to out grow it (except for the last week when she's been sniffly and teething)
