Are Cats And Dogs A Health Risk

I work as a pet groomer and I am wondering if anyone has any info about cats or dogs during pregnancy. I do groom dogs that have nasty ear and skin infections. I have been scratched by cats and I know there's something about cats and pregnancy.

Cats can carry a disease that can be pa__sed to humans. The books I've read say not to change the cat's litter box during pregnancy. You should ask your doctor if you need to make any changes in your job during pregnancy.

Yes there are some things you should be concerned about, please call your doc now. Jbear is talking about toxoplasmosis, that is a concern for pregnant cat owners. But only kitties who eat raw meat. Your situation a bit different because you are coming into contact with all kinds of pets. The fact that scratches and bites are very likely has me nervous for you. You don't know their history at all. I know some of us HAVE to work but make sure it's safe for you and baby.

I have 1 cat and 2 dogs at home. The doctor only told me to not change the cat litter, but I had a toxoplasimia test and they said I have never been exposed to it (which they were shocked since I have had my cat for 11 years! but he is an indoor cat and not exposed to other cats). Most people who own cats have had toxoplasimia at some point (flu like symptoms) and are immune. I would ask your doctor but mine said my animals are not an issue. Just wash your hands frequently.
