Tomato Craving Iron Deficiency Anemia

I'm not sure about iron deficiency (although if it's true, I'll line up to give it a shot,) but cravings sound normal. It could be the iron, as you are wondering, but it could also be the acidity that your body is craving.

I would sit and eat a can of stewed tomatoes... anything tomatoes. I craved it like you! I was anemic after my c/s, but not during pregnancy.

I am not pregnant however I have had this strong craving for tomatoes and found this site when I googled tomato craving, how interesting to read all your experiences and comments. I have very low ferritin which is the bodys' iron stores,4 years ago it was only 7 and I have got it up to 30 now, which for me is too low still as it aggravates the restless leg syndrome and Doc said I need to get it up to 80, to check the ferritin level you need to have an iron study done. maybe it is the vitamin c in the tomatoes that our body needs to absorb the iron.

First of all, I am not pregnant (I found this Forum by Googling my cravings). For years I have had mild cravings for tomato and pickle juice mixed together, wanting it maybe once a month. I've been on Lisinopril for about 6 weeks and on the third day of taking it, I HAD to have some tomato juice. It's been like this the whole 6 weeks, craving it every single day. I'm drinking low sodium Spicy Hot V-8 and that seems to do the trick; occasionally I'll add pickes or olives and their juice to it. I had my blood checked yesterday for anemia and I was fine; my BP is 116/80 now. The doctor said that maybe my body just wants it and she sees no problem with having it.

Hello,

In pregnant women (see pregnancy), iron-deficiency anemia can increase the risk. iron-deficiency anemia include unusual cravings for nonfood, tomatoes, cabbage, potatoes, and leafy greens.

Thanks
