High Fever During Early Pregnancy

Hi, I just found out last weekend that I'm pregnant. I'm 5 weeks and four days, in fact. In my fourth week, I had the flu. I had a fever that went all the way up to 102.8. I didn't know I was pregnant, so i didn't take any medicine to drop the fever. I took cool baths which helped bring it down to the high 99s. Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone knows if this could have harmed my baby. I read that a fever 20-28 days after conception can cause neural tube defects, but since it was only a week after conception, I'm hoping everything will be ok. Does anyone know of such a situation where the baby turned out fine? Or will my worst fears happen?

I had the flu a few months ago at 4 months pregnant. The baby is safe. Your body takes what it needs for the baby first and gives you the leftovers. I was rea__sured by my OB and the nurse that unless the fever reaches 104* then everything is fine. My fever got to 103* and I was worried as you are. A few days after I began to feel a bit better I went in for a fetal heart tones check and like I had been told, everything was great. I went in just to make myself feel better. Tomorrow I will be 31 weeks. You are having your first OB appointment at 8 weeks aren't you? I am sure you will see the heartbeat and everything will look perfect. Is this your first child? This is our second, we have a daughter named Madalyn who will be 28 months on june 9th.

Yes, this will be my first, so I'm very nervous! lol. I'm going to my OB this Friday so I will make sure to tell him what has been going on. Thank you so much for your comment; it really put me at ease!

Hi MFM731- I am in the same boat as you. I had fever and chills in the 4th week of pregnancy i.e. 2nd week post conception. My fever measured at 100.4 orally on several occasions over 3 days before I took tylenol and it went down. Only once at the doctors office it measured 101.2 using his digitial thermometer (again oral).

Would you mind sharing what your experience has been? Hopefully it all turned out great for you.
