Pollution Birth Defects

I'm going to be a new dad in six months or so; and I'm worried about the baby's health. my girfriend and I live in an apt right next to the freeway (close enough to hear the traffic indoors) and I've read a few things about the elements in this type of air pollution causing poor development, low birth weight, premature birth; even birth defects. I don't want to come off as paranoid but my girlfriend and I and her 11 month old son have felt generally run down since moving in here six months ago and we have another six to go before the lease is up. I just want to know: does any one have any info or advice to offer up on this? Am I justified in my fears? I hope I'm not just being paranoid. I just want the best for my family. Thank you.

Matt, the best advice I can give to you is to try to sublease the apt. If that is not an option, invest in a portable filtration system for your apt. Pollution has been linked to asthma, as well. I am sorry that you are in this situation. Lastly, you may want to have your apt checked for carbon monoxide. You can buy a detector at Home Depot. What city do you live in?

I live in Phoenix. Right next to the I-10, eight stinking lanes of non-stop traffic. I've heard some say that the filtration systems do nothing, yet others swear by them.

I would call the EPA and ask them what they recommend you do. I forgot to add that you should test your water, if you and your family have been feeling ill since your move. http://phoenix.gov/PCD/wmonov.html
