Dear miamax33 I just wanted you to know that my second birth (a healthy baby weighing 10.5 lb) with medically induced labor was nothing like the first one and no hematoma occured! I hope everyting will be just fine with your second one also!

Bruise is not really an accurate description. After my first was born, I was in horrible pain. I couldn't walk, I could barely speak and it hurt no matter what I did. I just thought it was because my son was so large, it was just going to hurt for a while! Some of my friends told me how they were relatively active after giving birth so finally after TWO weeks of beyond miserable pain, I went to my OB. In 20 years at a busy practice, this was only the second hematoma that he had seen (another OB in his office delivered my son). Within two hours I was put under so he could drain it. He didn't say it was life-threatening, but he knew it was causing considerable pain. I was worried that with my second, we would run into the same problem. I had another large baby and my OB was proactive in preventing another hematoma. It was amazing how GREAT I felt after my second birth. I showered, walked, carried my 9 lb boy...back to normal immediately - the way it should be! If you have had this before, it shouldn't affect future births. And if you are in considerable pain, don't be strong - call you OB ASAP!

I also had a hematoma on my left labia the size of a cantaloupe. It happened 5 mins after i had my baby and the doctors thought it was nothing. but I was feeling pops and i knew that it was not right so my gram told them to check me and when they looked the doctor ran down the hall and got a O.R. team together that took 45min to get them there and ready to cut it open and release the blood. They told me when i came to that if they would have been 15 min later that i would have not made it. I lost so much blood that they should have given me some but my type is O- and they had none. I was in the Hospital for 6 days and came home with a cath and didnt get it taken out untill 2 weeks later. An it is the worst pain i have ever had i would have rather had 10 kids before another hematoma. But hematomas are also a gathering of blood not just a bruise. People say bruise because they dont understand what they our my doctor didnt even know what it was at first and had never seen one let alone that big. And i have had anouther baby since that and i didnt get one it went good.

I am so sorry ladies! I can't believe how little information and compa__sion there is out there for this issue after childbirth. I too had a very severe hematoma after the birth of my first child. Bruise and hematoma should not even be used in the same sentence! My hematoma was so painful it was unbelievable. I had a completely natural childbirth and was also told the pain afterwards was normal. One nurse told me I just pulled a b___t muscle! Low and behold I had a huge hematoma that was much more painful than natural childbirth. I had to have a blood transfusion and was put on bed rest. I did have a hard time healing but at some point it did stop hurting. This was 5 years ago. Now I am totally freaked out because I am 14 weeks pregnant with my second child and am having tremendous amount of pain very similar to hematoma pain. I am having trouble sitting or standing and my whole v____al area is extremely painful to touch. Is there anyway that this thing did not heal the first time? Has anyone else experienced something like this? It is that terrible pulsing pain that takes up a very large area spreading into my sit bone area and even upper thighs. Does anyone know what could be happening?

I just thought I would add my story to the mix... I had a planned c-section with my first born. He was frank breech and combined with low fluid the 9 lb 13 oz kiddo would not budge! In June 2011 I went for the v-bac with my second (10 days past my due date and went into labor just 12 hours before my scheduled c-section!). After a painful labor, I finally delivered my 9 lb 6 oz daughter with some tearing, but overall felt good. They moved me to the mom/baby room and about 3 hours post delivery I began experiencing searing pain on my labia. The nurse took a look and immediately ran for the OB. I was off to the OR probably less than 45 min after I first began experiencing pain, but just as they were putting me under, the hematoma burst. I can remember waking up in the recovery room and telling the nurse I was in pain... Back to the OR with a hematoma on the OTHER side, which also burst. Before I even came out of anesthesia, a third hematoma developed. 8 units of blood later it was time for a new approach... transferred me to another hospital's radiology department to try some kind of embolization procedure and that did the trick. I spent 24 hours in ICU before I was able to go back to the Women's Hospital to be with my baby. I was on ma__sive pain killers for 6 days before I went home. Both labia were so incredibly engorged with blood that sitting was impossible for two or more weeks. My OB made an attempt to drain some of the blood after about week 3 or 4 without much success, but it just took time for my body to reabsorb. After 8 weeks, the swelling/blood pockets had almost completely gone away, but the biggest difference was made when all of the granular tissue was removed. Painful procedure using silver nitrate, but within a day or two I was able to completely stop all prescription pain meds. Was able to be intimate with my husband after 6 months, but only with lidocane gel (miracle stuff!). 18 months postpartum and only have pain at penetration. Otherwise I am in the best shape of my life. We are at the point of wanting to decide about more children and feel very conflicted! I have a meeting with my doctor next week to discuss it.

Yes, I went through the exact same thing. The doctor just couldn't suture me back. There was just so much blood. I was pushed to the operating theatre and was 'repaired' for almost 4 hours. End of the surgery I had a v____a plug inserted to stop the bleeding. It was only removed 2 days later.

mine formed and was serious enough to needed to go to OR right after delivering my son, it is not a bruise, like one said on here, it is a internal bleeding, and it you have took time to look at images or look it up online, it can be very bad. Also you could end up with a life time cathader and damage to the v____a. I got neither, but it was and still is painful a week later.! good luck.

#2 - There are many of us that have experienced the hematoma directly after birth on this forum and my doctor's also said it was very rare and especially for a vaginal birth.  The nurses were transporting me to the recovery room after the birth of my first baby (boy) and they had told me the pain meds would wear off - but the pain was still excruciating.  It just felt like an intense throbbing pain down there.  The nurses had no idea what was going on.  I said I thought I had really bad gas and needed to use the restroom (#2) and so they helped me on the toilet and nothing eased the pain.  It was worse than labor itself.  My fiance was there and he said my pained face was worst than the pain in my face during contractions and he was seriously, very worried.  Finally (thank goodness!!!) the new shift Doctor came in and knew exactly what was happening and pinpointed the fact that I may be having a hematoma and they put me back in the delivery room, put me on the strongest pain meds and I ended up having to get a blood transfusion.  I stayed in the hospital for over a week and never held my son cuz I was too medicated.  So after this weird experience, I will always be a high risk when pregnant. 

#3) Second pregnancy plus labor and delivery was smooth smailing.  My baby girl literally popped out of me.  No epidural, no pain meds afterwards.  I was ready to go home an hour later - but of course had to stay in the hospital for a few days.  

Hi... I am pregnant with our 2nd child :)... & just found this post which is very interesting. I had large vaginal hematoma following the birth of our son nearly 3 years ago & have been very anxious that it will occur again! Since then I have experienced bad throbbing & hardly being able to stand on the 1st/2nd day of every period :(  It is NOT just a bruise & anyone who has had one will understand that it is bl**dy painful & as bad as, or if not worse than the labour itself!! My ob assures me that it is very unlikely to occur in subsequent pregnancies & if so I would be extremely unlucky... anyone had it happen a second time?

I developed two hematomas after giving birth to my son on November 18th. They both formed about 24hrs after delivery. One was my entire left labia. But it reabsirbed in about 2-3 days. My other was on my vaginal wall to the left side. I had a ct scan done because it was giving me urinary issues. It measured 12.2 cm x 11.7 cm x 6.6 cm. Its location pushes my bladder, rectum, vagina, cervix, and uterus to the right. Had a checkup today, I'm three weeks postpartum. And my midwife said it doesn't seem like its reabsorbed at all yet.

For those that didn't have it drained, how long did it take for yours to reabsorb? It is still excruciating trying to sit at all, stand for any length of time, or do anything besides lay on my side. Just want it to heal already!

Hi, ladies! I had a huge hematoma when I had my daughter, one and possibly only unless I can meet other women and hear success stories with other pregnancies. Mine was 9-7-7 and not diagnosed until I tried to cancel my follow up appointment because I was still in so much pain. They told me to go to the ER instead of the office, but when I had my daughter they treated me like a weenie or a pain med seeker. Pissed. Anyway, I'm seven months PP and still have something. Scheduled for an ultrasound to see if it's still some hematoma or fluid, a cyst, etc. Aren't these things the absolute worst?! Thank God for healthy babies, but geez.. If anyone is still around and willing to chat I'd love to meet someone who can relate. No one has even heard of it that I know, even my doctors seem clueless, and when people do recognize the word they think it's a bruise. Ha!

I'm so glad I found this forum.  I'm not sure how long ago these were posted as there's no date on the posts but I wanted to get some info.  So I'm 21 weeks pregnant with my second baby and I experienced a vaginal hematoma with my first. I had a vaginal delivery and they used a vacuum because my son's heart rate dropped to 58 so they had to rush him out. The whole OB team and NICU team of doctors rushed in. Almost immediately after delivery I felt REALLY bad pain down there but my nurses also brushed it off as "you just had a baby had to get stitches." She was wrong! My goodness this was the worst pain I've ever felt! Worse than childbirth itself.  My story pretty much is like the rest here. Mine was in my vaginal wall,  was more than 200cc, (it was way bigger than a cantaloupe) rushed to OR for vaginal packing,  blood transfusion,  then to angio. I was in the hospital for 5 days and my son was in NICU for 7 days because he also swallowed a bit of his meconium. After being discharged, I opted not to have it drained. I just didn't want to be touched down there again.  It reabsorbed on its own. I was able to spend 8 months with my son before returning to work.  I was in pain and trying to heal during that whole time but it was worth it.  My doctor also told me that having another baby would be ok and I should have no issues if I wanted to deliver vaginally again. On to this pregnancy.  I'm 21 weeks have been feeling really sore down there for a couple weeks now.  My doctor now (different doctor because we moved) says everything is fine and its normal to be sore again. Well 2 days ago I decided to grab a mirror and have a look down there.  It's sore and I can see it's a bit swollen.  I'm worried about it because of how sore and painful it is. Has anyone had issues with soreness and pain during their pregnancy after the vaginal hematoma? If so, what did you do about it and how was your delivery? I'm worried but I want to experience a "normal" vaginal delivery. I have my next OB check on the 18th and today is the 8th. Just wanted to see if I could get any insight before my appointment.  Thank you for reading.  November 8, 2016
