Possible Gauze Left Inside Of Me?

Hi just wondering if it is possible that gauze has been left inside of me after Vaginal birth.
I had my daughter 3 months ago and have started to have smelly dark periods.
I had a Pap smear at 6 weeks postpartum so wouldn't my doctor have found it then? If something was there
