Type II Diabetes on the Rise in the US and Potentially Dangerous for Your Pregnancy
The number of pregnant women with pre-existing Type II Diabetes has more than double in the United States since 1999. The developing of Type II Diabetes has been linked to obesity in both adults and children and prevents the body from producing enough insulin or using what is produced. Doctors have linked this increase in diabetic cases to the rise in obesity within the American population as a whole. Pregnant women with Type II Diabetes have a higher risk for miscarriage, stillbirth or giving birth to a baby with birth defects. The American medical community is urging women with this condition to plan their pregnancies and seek medical assistance at least three months before becoming pregnant. This time frame is recommended in order to allow women with Type II Diabetes to control their blood sugar levels before becoming pregnant and increase their chances of giving birth to a healthy baby. Overweight women with the condition are also advised to loose weight before pregnancy, eat healthy and engage in daily exercise.
