Pregnancy

Medical tests such as a pregnancy ultrasound can help your health care provider monitor your baby's development, while more specialized pregnancy tests such as chorionic villus sampling (CVS) can help detect conditions such as Down syndrome and cystic fibrosis.

In our section devoted to pregnancy, learn more about these types of pregnancy tests as well as the importance of prenatal care.  Also get information about pregnancy discomforts and multiple pregnancies.

Determining Your Baby’s Health

A considerable number of pregnancies are unplanned. In fact, around 50% or 1 in 2 of women falls pregnant without having planned to have a baby.

In such cases, it is impossible for couples to have a full health evaluation before trying for a baby in order to assess their genetic health and determine whether the baby they conceive will inherit any family diseases.

However, for the couples who are planning and trying for a baby, there is what is known as preconception genetic testing- this is ideal if you want to try to ensure the baby conceived is free of certain chromosomal abnormalities and hereditary diseases.

Your doctor or prenatal care specialist will first and foremost assess you and your partner’s family medical history to see whether there are any illnesses which seem to run in the family. Further to this, they may suggest carrying out genetic health testing to see whether you and your partner carry the disease causing gene.

Following this, they will discuss the likelihood of the disease being passed on to the baby, any likely complications and so forth. Couples can then decide, based on the risk evaluation, whether to have a baby of their own and adopt.

Prenatal Testing

A range of screening tests including ultrasounds are used to indicate whether there is anything wrong with the baby and monitor the health of the baby closely as pregnancy advanced.

Unfortunately, when it comes to certain conditions such as Down syndrome, a screening test such as an ultrasound will not provide a confirmation. So, if any traits associated with Down syndrome are spotted during a routine ultrasound, the expectant mother may be advised to undergo an amnio.

Amniocentesis and other diagnostic tests such as CVS carry certain risks such as miscarriage or injury to the fetus’ limbs. Pregnant women may be given the option of non invasive prenatal testing which is carried out with 0 risk using just blood samples from the mother.

The fact that the test is done using blood samples collected from the mother means that, unlike amniocentesis or CVS, there is not puncturing of the amniotic sac or tissue biopsy. Non invasive prenatal testing is offered also for paternity and a number of companies, including Genetic Testing Laboratories. The test is done using a kit and blood collection tubes. The blood is collected by a medical blood draw and a medical professional will need to do this.

Ok ladies im new to this but i dont know what else to turn to. Here is my story. My husband and i have been trying to get pregnant since May 2011. I had my IUD removed in April 2011 and started my menstral 3 days later and has been a regular 30 day cycle since. I was suppose to start Aug 17 2011 and today is Aug 25 2011. I went to the doctor Monday Aug 22 2011 and they did a urine test and blood test and both negative and said no UTI infection. And that i was prob just a little bit late this month. I really think im pregnant but whats the chances that i would of got a neg blood test? I have heard of it happening. I have a 2 year old son and when i was preg with him i didnt get a positive at home test till i was a week late. And only had cramping like i was going to start but never did. And thats what i have now all i have is cramping that comes and goes but nothing else. What are the possibilities that im infact pregnant? If some one could please give me a little help that would be great... Thanks!!

Please help! I just found out I was pregnant yesterday, the father is my fiancé whom I've been with for 6 years. We have never used protection and decided we would welcome a baby into our lives should it happen. We are both about to graduate from college but live with his family, now he says he is unsure and wants me to get an abortion. I don't want that but I have to respect him too, it's our baby not just mine. I feel unloved by him even though it's a matter of finances, I can't help it.mi don't know what to do...

My situation is a little bit different, but we will see if anything comes of this. I got pregnant on or around April 12th 2011 around week 6 of this pregnancy the fetus quit developing however I carried the little bean for a good while the entire time thinking I was still pregnant. I had sex with my husband on June 24th and then had the miscarriage of our fist pregnancy on June 26th. I began to have pregnancy symptoms again around August 2nd and took a test that was positive. I was over the moon!! So happy! I assumed the baby was conceived on July 10th and that I was 6 weeks exactly when I went for my first ultra sound. Turns out the baby measured 7 weeks and 5 days at that time, this was three days ago on Wednesday August 15th. That would mean that today I am 8 weeks and 1 day along. 8 weeks and one day ago was June 24th, two days before I miscarried our first pregnancy. IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE????? Can you be carrying and still get pregnant? At first I thought surely I am only 6 weeks along and the baby is just developing faster than normal, but I am beginning to have my doubts. I am also concerned because I drank heavily due to the tremendous loss I was feeling at the time, good god I hope this little guy IS just a faster developer. At my first U/S we couldn't see the heartbeat, but I am having my blood taken every other day to test for hormone level growth, and I go back this next Wed. for another U/S and I am praying all is well.
