For labor I just took the cards as they were dealt and knew going in that you can't know which way the game will be played. But for afterwards while you're still at the hospital, don't forget your chapstick and shower shoes. I know the rooms seem clean but I honestly don't think they can be all that clean.

I am terrified about giving birth after hearing all the horror stories etc... I am just worried about the pain, or if I will know when I am going into labor. I also worry about whether I will be able to tell real contractions apart from braxton hicks contractions. I know it's probably silly but I have no idea how to tell.

I was induced at 42 weeks of my pregnancy (first baby at 36yrs). The procedure started at 12:30pm and the pains started at 20:00pm, by 22:00pm i was 6cm dilated and i couldn't dilate any further than that so the pains keep on going stronger the whole night and the following day till midday and it was decided that i have an epidural ceaser. i delivered my baby soon after that midday. So in essence i suffered two kinds of pains which is an inducement and the after effects of ceaser. If only i knew i would have opted for a ceaser right from the beginning.

This is in response to the last post - the drugs that they give you to ease the pain do not get you high, in fact they don't even make it so you can't feel what's happening, you can still experience the entirety of labor and delivery - but without the pain. For those of us not lucky enough to be done with it in four hours (mine took fourteen)- there's nothing wrong with choosing pain relief!

I was completely unprepared for the birth of my first child. I had just begun thinking about putting together my hospital bag when I was sent to the hospital for an emergency cesarean! The one thing after my cesarean that I wanted more than anything else was my slippers! The hospital provided some ugly tan unisex slipper socks but they were nothing compared to my comfy plush slippers! I'm scheduled to have my second son on January 11th and the first thing that went in the bag this time was my old faithfuls!

I would have to say labour was the best experience I have yet to discover. Mind you, from start to finish it lasted under 4 hours, it was so fast and especially as it was my first baby. My partner and I were both lost for words when our son was born and couldn't believe how quick it all had been. All I can say is stay as natural as you can with pain relief. Gas and air was what I had. You feel so proud of yourself and you can really appreciate the moment as you are not high on drugs.
