I am 6 1/2 months pregnant with my first child, this was not a planned pregnancy and 5 months ago I took a job as a preschool teacher JUST because I needed to sve money for me and my baby. By monday Morning my boss wants me to put in my Maternity leave request- but I am unsure about HOW much time BEFORE the baby is due should I take off. I need time to prepare physcially and emotionally, is a month and a half too long for that preparation (what if baby comes early)? My boss also wants to know IF I'll be coming back after the 6 week LOA.... I DON'T Know if I'll want to come back, so is it okay to tell her that without expecting her to keep my position open??? I never really considered my options, please give me any advice you think can be helpful :) THANKS

By law they have to keep your position open regardless of whether you return or not, tell them youl'll poss be going back then decide in your own time.

You will be bored to death if you take off a month before baby. I usually take a week or 2 before my due date. That way I'm not sitting around just waiting for the baby to come.

I agree with Chel. No more then 2 weeks before. If you take any longer then it will seem like forever when your baby is going to come. Just just start getting the nursery and things like that ready here and there throughout your pregnancy. That way when you take the 2 weeks off you can truely relax until you go into the wonderful I have to clean everything mode. Let your boss know that yes you do plan to come back between 6 and 8 weeks after the baby is born. Not after you take maternity leave. Some bosses count maternity leave when you leave not when the baby is born.

I agree, don't take too much time off. In fact, I worked up until just a few days before my due date with my first, and my baby was two weeks late. I almost went out of my mind sitting around and waiting.
