Pregnant In Nursing School

I recently got accepted into a very good RN program that I start in a month, and it takes two years to complete so I will graduate May 2009. I'm 26 now, will be 28 when I graduate. I won't be working while I'm in school. My husband is 30 and only makes around $35,000/yr right now as a starting professor. I've been ready to start a family for a long time now, and the desire just keeps getting stronger and stronger! My husband is starting to talk about wanting to have a baby too. If I had been satisfied with my first degree, I would probably be having a baby in the next year. I'm just wondering if anyone else has gotten pregnant in nursing school, and how challenging it was to balance the incredibly intense workload with a baby on the way. I'm ready now but I want to get through school. I just know that there will never be a "right" time, what with loans, jobs, and everything that life brings up.

Hi. I am a former medical student who finished 3 yrs in med school prior to changing focus to a nursing/NP program. If this makes you feel better...I know of no less than 3 students who actually had babies while in medical school. Medical school is about the most demanding graduate program imaginable.....also...while in my nursing program 3 students ALSO gave birth. It's totally feasible even if it may become a bit challenging at times. Schools cannot discriminate against pregnant students. But...if you become pregnant...I would suggest not telling them for a while.

Well, I answered my own question. With my husband working away in a different city I lapsed on my BCP, and when he got back we, um...made up for lost time. I am now four weeks pregnant. 8 years on the pill and the one month I don't take it I get knocked up! I am telling him this Friday when he comes in town. I can't wait!

CONGRATS! I am starting nursing school in Jan and would like to get pregnant in the next two years too so you will have to update us and let us know how it works for you. I agree that there is never a "right" time. I try to plan everything and nothing ever seems to go as planned but it all ends up okay!

I am having my son this Oct and finishing my MSN program next fall. It's plenty doable...albeit somewhat challenging. Congrats to you! You will be just fine!

Well, so far so good. I am 19 weeks along and doing great. I absolutely love being pregnant. I've had so many stomach/hormone issues over the years I thought for sure I'd be miserably sick but I've had nothing! I can't to meet this baby! 12/22 we find out the s_x! Good luck to you Ca__sJ and thanks for the encouragement docbytch!

Good luck to you and congrats docbytch!! It seems like it happened for a reason! I become pregnant this summer and only had one year of grad school left! As you can see I am going to have to take a semester off and finish in the fall. I was the same way though, almost ten years on BC and then I changed BC and got pregnant during that one month transition (where you are supposed to use back up....opps!). I was so ready and all I can say is good for you :) All the best this holiday season.

Just an update - we are having a girl at the end of April! I'm being induced April 27 so she should be born sometime on the 28th. I CANNOT wait to finally hold her. It has been really hard this semester, balancing school and pregnancy but I am so excited to have this baby. My hormones are just trying to get me to relax and be a mom but my brain is trying to get through schoolwork! No fun!
