Forced C Sections

Hello, Chloe, I was having the same battle with my physician and hospital. I was scheduled for a cesarean section on December 12th of this year. I felt contractions early morning of December 5th, I called my doctor and told her I did not feel like I needed a c-section and begged her to let me labor at home for a while. She said she couldn't force me to come to the hospital but to please come by her office. I did and I was fully effaced and 4 centimeters, 2 cm beyond what I ever got to with my first baby. She asked me to at least hang around her office if I was refusing a c-section and I said ok. Well long story short, I went from 4 to 8 in the hour and a half I stayed at her office and oddly, got the urge to push at 8...that's when my OB said that's it, it sounds like your'e going to be able to do this kiddo, and we rushed across the street to the Hospital. I delivered a beautiful and robust baby boy who weighed 8 pounds less than an hour after I got admitted!! Joy of joy, what a wonderful experience and my doctor was just flabbergasted, she was so certain my original problems would happen again and it was the easiest, most wonderful experience in the world. Okay, it wasn't easy, but it wasn't a c-section either. I am home and a bit sore, but feeling fantastic! I have done a bit of Christmas shopping today and my 5 day-old son has already had his picture taken with his older sister on Santa's lap...I wouldn't have been up to that if I had had a c-section. Wow!

What a great story! Congratulations!

Hello, Bella! That is a great story, like Jamie said. I am still hopeful i will be able to deliver VBAC but my little one is trying to jump the starting gate. I had a few more strong contractions but they have stopped. I would like to make it to 35 weeks, I am almost 29 weeks and so if baby will hold on at least 6 more weeks I will breathe easy...I would like to say this, I started this post because I have had a v____al delivery that was wonderful and uncomplicated, but I will defer to a c-section if that truly is what is best for my baby or I. If this wee one decide to come more than a few weeks early, I will listen if they say a c-section will prevent trauma to the baby, the doc I have now is so pro-VBAC but CONSTANTLY reminds me that my desire to do so does NOT superscede the health of the baby or me. He is quite insistant that I agree to listen to voices of reason in this and in some way that is so comforting. We have an absolute set of criterion that must be met along the way and if anything changes, he has no problem doing a c-section. See the doc next week and then an u/s right before Christmas...baby needs patience!!!!

I was wondering about you, Chloe! Worried you had had that baby already...glad to hear he's staying put thus far. I'll pray for a solid 8 more weeks for you! My daughter was born at 37 weeks, and was still over 8 pounds...so I'm praying you get a term baby!

Chloe - December 17

Hi to all, I had some more contractions and again, it was due to a stupid kidney infection....I have never had these before so they have changed my diet and what I drink in an attempt let my kidneys have a break. Has anyone else had this? I did not know that kidney infections were one of the main causes of premature births. Anyhow, baby is still in where SHE belongs, yes, it is my girl I have been hoping for!!!!! When I went back to hospital for this latest round of contractions they did an u/s and finally she showed her true colors. She is measuring exactly right for her dates and other than my issues she is doing well. Hi to Jamie!!!

Jamie - December 17

Yay! Congratulations on your little girl!!!!! What are you going to name her? And, is your cervix thinned at all, or are you dilated any? I'm still sending term-baby thoughts your way, and hoping that Santa DOESN"T bring you labor!

Jamie - December 17

Oh yah! Update - I'm NOT prengnant again, thank god - it was just my paranoia.

Chloe - December 18

Hi All! To Jamie, I am going back and forth between Sabelle (like Isabelle, without the Is...) and MacKenna...but there is the nurse Maisy posting on these forums and that is just the cutest name! I don't know, the name Eavie is cute too, from a movie a few years back. Right now I am just taking your term-baby thought seriously and staying as quiet and calm as possible with two boys running around!!! I talked to a woman at the hospital who just had a VBAC and she said she was sruprised at how fast it went, but she also said that because it was fast it was pretty intense pain too....I wish I could just duplicate my first birth....hard work, but so NOT painful for me. No contractions for the last 24 hours and my kidneys feel better. Are you glad you are not pg?

Jamie - December 19

I'm very happy I'm not pg again...my daughter is only 4 months old; when I was still in the hospital, my doctor told me that if I conceived again within the next 12 months, and did not terminate the pregnancy, she would refuse me as a patient. Since I could never ever bring myself to do such a thing, I would've been in a really difficult position, y'know?

Gemma - December 21

Hi All, not to brag....but I am going to anyways, after my VBAC I have felt so much better that I have taken to light jogging on my treadmill, can you believe it? My doctor said only for a few minutes so the pelvic floor muscles can heal and so I don't undue any healing going on...but can you imagine????? My husband is a bit concerned as he is an MD, but I am just so much happier this time. I will take a couple days off from jogging and walk, as I don't want to end up regretting the VBAC by damaging myself...LOL. Good luck to all, either way you end up delivering, and to Chloe, congrats on YOUR baby girl! Hope she doesn't stay so impatient but I have to warn you, I have 2 girls now and that is just how girls are...Ha-Ha! MY Chloe is getting chubby already and she's not even a month old until the 28th, what a lovely baby too. More updates soon. Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah to all!

Jamie - December 21

You're jogging already? wow...Glad to hear you andf Baby Chloe are doing well!

aisha - December 21

i think it is tru no 1 needs to be forced to hav a c- section done coz it aint right and things need to be done about it some body help us thid shudnt be happenin to us and im only 15

Chloe - December 21

To Aisha, I know you have heard it up to here and back about how young you are, so I won't ram that point home...but if you are pregnant again and you had a c-section already you may be in a different position than some of us. Your body is still growing and your pelvis may not be mature enough yet to have a v____al birth. But if you ask your doctor to measure you and see if your pelvis has matured, then I agree with you that you shouldn't be forced to have another c-section just because you had one before. Good luck and thank you for putting a very young mother's opinion on here for us. Gemma, should you really be jogging? I don't know if I was doing that, but I do know that I was a lot better off after my v____al birth than my c-section, so glad you are doing so well! Hi to Jamie, baby girl is behaving since I have gotten a handle on the kidney infections. Diet and antibiotics have really helped so far and no contractions for a few days. Yay!

Chloe - January 2

Hello! I am still keeping baby girl in. I am 31 weeks. My doctor thinks we will go early, but the kidneys are under control for now. I have BH's more than I should at this stage, but they aren't as strong and I am not dilated...whew! I just need to make it to the end of February. The baby is due March 2nd or so. I heard of another woman who wanted a VBAC and they refused her, she ended up having the section and now has serious complications from it...talk is she has connections to our State Legislature and some heads are going to roll when she is recovered enough. I just don't see why they are FORCING women to do this, I really don't. Any how, Happy New Year TO ALL.

Jamie - January 2

Glad to hear you're doing well, Chloe! And I can just imagine the lawsuit!!! What state is it? I'll be praying for 6 more weeks of pregnancy for you. A Valentine's baby would be nice!

Tracy2046 - January 3

Chloe, My first child was a planned c-section due to a breach presentation. My second child born 22 months later was by VBAC. Very successful. I loved it for many reasons - easier, more involved, swifter recovery, less pain, etc. I am prone to preeclampsia but it only shows up right before delivery ( a week or two). I am currently 39 weeks, 4 days pregnant with number 3. They told me at my last appointment that if I did not go into labor on my own by my due date (Thurs. 1/5) that I should come prepared to schedule surgery. I cannot tell you how angry I am over this. They are not even taking into consideration the healthy delivery by VBAC that I had with my last child. It is almost as if I am not a part of the equation at all and I have no say over what happens to MY body. I would much prefer a VBAC because the c-section recovery was awful. I too am wondering why I am being forced into a procedure I don't want. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow and have made a plan. Since it is obviously too late for me to doctor shop at this point, I will go in and schedule the appointment for surgery, but I will make it for next week. While she is examining me, I am going to demand that she strip my membranes (which put me into labor for my second child 2 days later). Then hopefully I will not have to worry about showing up for my forced c-section. One last thing, I believe the prevelance of forcing a woman to have a c-section, just within the last 5 years is the increase in people trying to win the "litigation lottery" and doctors are leary of such lawsuits. So, they tout the studies regarding uterine rupture, but fail to tell the woman that the incidence of uterine rupture is .5 - 1%. Also a uterine rupture could happen to anyone, not just women who have had a previous section. I could talk about this for hours as it is a situation I am currently going through. I'll see how my appointment goes tomorrow and possibly post again in this regard.
