Pamela and others - I can now share at least part of my outcome with you. I had an MRI several weeks ago for presumed endometrioma (see above posts - endometrial tissue transplanted likely during c-section somewhere in my abdominal wall). It showed a definite ma__s, consistent with an endometrioma, that looked like it was somewhere between my rectus abdominus muscle and the underlying fascia. I had surgery to remove the ma__s 8 days ago. 4 hours long, under general anesthesia, and was able to go home 4 hours after I woke up. The surgeons ended up removing an endometrioma that was about 2x3cm, down in the original c-section scar in my fascia (the tissue that underlies the muscle, but is still somewhat above the lining of your actual 'gut'). They had to excise a good chunk of the fascia, which then required a "patch," using a material similar to Gortex. Hence, the fairly lengthy surgery. Recovery has been better than the c-section, for sure. I went back to work today, but am not supposed to lift anything over 10 lbs for 6 weeks (bit of a problem with 2 small children!). For surgeries for endometriomas that are not so far down (and that don't require excision into the fascia), I would think recovery would be much less painful and speedier. The fascial repair is, I think, what made mine a little more complicated.
So, as some may remember, my symptoms were two years' worth of swelling on one side of my c-section scar, and extremely painful burning that more or less started with menstruation and ended with ovulation. I now have a firm diagnosis, at least for what we're all presuming caused my pain, and the ma__s is GONE. (and for those curious, they were able to go back in right over my old c-section scar) I'll keep you posted as to whether or not the initial pain returns. So far, so good! To those of you out there seeking a diagnosis, I would encourage you to find a doctor who will listen to your symptoms and not dismiss them as "normal" pain (not sure that exists), adhesions, or other things which can't really be treated. Though I don't doubt these diagnoses may be true in some cases, I have a strong suspicion that endometriomas and similar conditions are very underdiagnosed. Though certainly not always, you may have better luck with an OBGYN department at a teaching hospital. I certainly did.

Hello All,
I have been writing for a while. Well I went back to the doctor when my pain was back. Comes with my period for about ten days after period begins. It is sore and stabbing , hard to walk and bend. They took my pelvic sono and once again found nothing except a small marble cyst that they say would not cause me pain. Can anyone identify with this? I know i have rerrible pain and it seems like they do not believe me?? They suggested birth control but I smoke? Please any one with similiar story please let me know did your pain go away? Did you see other doctors? This is so frustrating!!

Lori - Have you read any of the other postings on this forum? I would think they would be very helpful to you.

Hi thanks!!
I have been reading for a while but the peoblem is that my doctors seems to know nothing about endo or incisonal endo. I guess I am looking for some kind of answer as to where to go to get help for this or should I just live with the pain?

Lori - Sounds like you need a new doctor. Also, FYI, an MRI is probably best (short of a needle or core biopsy) to diagnose an incisional endometrioma, if that is what you might have (I don't think an ultrasound would be particularly helpful. CT might be useful, depnding on the size and whether they knew what they were looking for). You also need a doctor who actually has some experience with these, or is at least willing to learn about them. That being said, no one on this forum can diagnose you, but I certainly would not just live with the pain. If I were you, I'd be checking out a new doctor. An OB-GYN should technically know the most about these, but a general surgeon might know something too. Perhaps others have other suggestions re: which specialty to turn to. Good luck.

Thanks Suzanne,
I guess it's time to find a new obgyn. I just don't like how I was made to feel like I was making all this up from my doctors. I appeciate your advice and thanks again. I see that a lot of others go through similiar frustration. I had an ultrasound and a catscan and they say I am healthy as can be. I guess I should consider myself lucky!! When the pain comes on every month, that is so unbearable, at those times I do not feel so lucky. Take care and thanks for your advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To Emma: we chatted a while ago when you offered advice to me. I went for my ultrasound scan today and the doctor only found something on my liver (as I have started to feel pain there too), but not too worry about it. They found nothing at all where my pain has been! (I am 8 weeks pregnant at the moment). So at least I know it didn't cause problems there. But my pain is still here. How are you getting on? They said there could be further tests but as I am pregnant now they couldn't do anything, and referred me to my Obst when booking into hospital for this next baby, they might know something?? Still no answers.....

I am amazed to see so many woman feeling the same symptoms as myself. You start to wonder if you are crazy when the doctors don't seem to have any answers. My doctor is convinced that it is neuralgia. He says a nerve my have gotten caught in the incesion site. I feel sceptical. Maybe I'll ask about the laparacopy.

Attention women with pain in lower abdomen prior to c-sections etc..........I just had a point of pain excised from my lower ab.........it hurt if I pressed on it and that right area seemed to be more swollen around my mense...........ANYWAY>>>>surgeon removed a peice of scar and pathology results showed endometriosis in my scar. If my swelling and pain doesn't resolve after having a peice of the scar excised, I can have the entire scar redon. I am relieved to have an answer. This is 5 years after my last c-section.

I had surgery about 4.5 yrs ago to remove a fibroid....since then I have had a dull...sometimes stabbing pain on my lower left side just about where my hip bone is. I also had a section 22 months ago and now have another pain located lower. I have had an ultrasound and they told me there was nothing there that would cause me any pain that they could determine. I have been examined, poked, prodded everything...they have come up with nothing. My OBGYN figures that it is an adhesion or ligament damage. Not that I wish this on anyone but I am so glad I found this website. I had convinced myself that I was crazy and it must all be in my head!
