Apparently there are only 3 or 4 hospitals that can participate in cord blood collection, which i find disgusting, or government should do more to make it available at every major hospital in australia. I read an article that it wasnt available in wa but the rotary club were raising money in the hopes of making it available there

Hi. I actually asked my midwife about this at my last visit. I live in Brisbane and am attending the largest hospital in the city - and they don't have a bank. The midwife did say though that as it is not their practice to clamp the umbilical cord (they don't cut it until it has stopped pulsing usually), most of the blood is taken from the cord by the baby anyway. They apparently use what little is left to do testing - like to determine the babies blood type for instance. So depending on your birth preferences, it might not be possible anyway? If you are still interested, I have read somewhere that Ronald McDonald House has a bank, although I don't know if it is private (for your use only) or public (like a donation to anyone who needs cord blood).
