Difference Between Over The Counter And Prescription Vitamin

I've been taking over the counter prenatal vitamins and was just wondering if there is any huge difference between those and ones that the doctor would prescribe. It has folic acid and all that. Any one?

I have been taking over the counter vitamins too, One Source from Walmart. My doctor told me there is not a difference except that the ove rthe counter ones are usually smaller and tend to not upset your stomach. I knwo some people who couldn't take their perscription ones because they made them really sick and their doctors told them to try the over the counter ones. Perscription vitamins are just another way pharmaceutical companies make more money.

The huge difference is the price. The OTC's are just as good.

Im not pregnant yet so i cant be 100% sure but i have never heard of prescription pregnancy vitamins here in Australia. Family and friends who are/have been pregnant always just bought the OTC ones and i never thought there was another option.

I took over the counter vitamins the first 3 months of my pregnancy. My Dr. switched me to prescription vitamins. He said they just have a little more of everything, especially the folic acid.

One thing to consider with any vitamin is how quickly it dissolves. If it doesn't dissolve in 20-30 minutes in a gla__s of water, then there is a good chance your body will pa__s most of it's claimed benefits right into the toilet. Just try it, you might be surprised!

I asked the pharmacist and she told me the only difference was a full mg of folic acid compared to 800mcg in the otc. So, not a huge difference if you eat foods with folic in them you can make it up. Also, make sure to eat a little bit of fat with the vitamins, because our bodies cant absorb vitamins without fat.

I've always taken otc prenatal vitamins. I get them from my dad's health food store. They have all the same stuff as prescription does I'm sure. The only difference is I have to take 5 a day (they are small). Not sure how prescriptions are.

I take the prenatals from Walgreens and when I went to the Dr, she told me that that is basically the exact same thing as the prescription ones, so I should keep taking them. The only benefit would be insurance would pay for more of it, but they aren't that expensive
