Flaxseed Debate

Is anyone else out there completely confused about flaxseed during pregnancy? My "Healthy Pregnancy" class at the hospital raved about it due to the Omega 3s, antioxidants, and fiber, but I can find sources on the internet that are very reputable (Mayo Clinic) that say it should never be taken during pregnancy because it causes uterine contractions and can lead to pre-term labor. Even on this site, I can find different chains that have opposing information. I have chosen not to risk it, but I know how important Omega 3s are right now (I'm 27 weeks pregnant) and the fish twice a week is getting old. Thanks for any info you might have!

I have been taking flax oil. I researched it on the internet and found that it helps with brain development. But then again, I found a source that sait it also contains cyanide, but that it hasn't been show to affect the fetus. So, I am still taking it, but I am taking only one capsule instead of two.

I have flaxseed in my cereal. My doctor is the one who recommended it because it contains so much fiber. I took it all through my first pregnancy (now on number 2) and never had any problems with contractions or pre-term labor... in fact I was a week late!

thanks for the comments guys. Just wanted to let you know that I went to my doctor yesterday and he said it was fine to take flaxseed, just don't eat ONLY flaxseed! In other words, don't overkill. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

I ate ground organic flaxseed every day during my last trimester. MY baby is perfectly fine. I sprinkled about 4 tablespoons on my cereal every morning. I never had any preterm contractions, in fact didn't even have an BH until 37 weeks.

You can also get omega 3 from hemp seed oil. It has a very good nutty flavor and is good in salad dressing. I blend it with margarine and eat it on toast. (It does make the margarine green though.)

I read that DHA is very important for brain development.Your body makes it from EFAs (seesntial fatty acids. EFAs are found in nutritious foods such as flax seeds, soy and canola oils, walnuts and pumpkin seeds. Less concentrated sources are green leafy vegetables, grains and spirulina. There are DHA supplements that can be helpful if you are pregnant or nursing. DHA is very concentrated in b___stmilk, and research shows that the longer you b___stfeed your baby, the less likely they are to develop ADD. So DHA is a very important nutrient for those of us that are pregnant or nursing. Corn, sunflower, and safflower oils can inhibit the amount of DHA your body can make. Switching to canola or soy oil for cooking is an easy fix. Then 1 tablespoon of flax oil a day is all you need to produce enough DHA for a healthy baby. I drizzle it on my oatmeal in the morning.

I was told it was OK by my dr also and bought a book that says that it seems ok but in rats it causes secondary s_xual development. What does that mean? I am not so sure about using it anymore. I use it because I have contacts that I wear 24hrs a day and it is supposed to be good for lubrication. not sure if its worth it, but I cant figure out what secondary s_xual development means.

Hi, we're vegetarian and can't take the fish oils for omega 3. We've been taking flax seed oil vegicaps for some time now, but since becoming pregnant, were also rather concerned. Thanks for this discussion! I've also just got back from my obstetrician and he confirmed that it is safe, as long as we stick to the doses. If anyone else has more info, plz share!

Pregnancy and b___st-feeding: Taking flaxseed by mouth during pregnancy is POSSIBLY UNSAFE. Flaxseed can act like the hormone estrogen. Some healthcare providers worry that this might harm the pregnancy, although to date there is no reliable clinical evidence about the effects of flaxseed on pregnancy outcomes. The effect of flaxseed on b___st-fed infants is unknown at this time. Stay on the safe side, and don’t use flaxseed if you are pregnant or b___st-feeding.

You won't be able to get this information from your MD, they have little to no nutritional training and almost no training in nutritional diseases. Because they have no idea, they will tell you to avoid it because they just simple don't know. This is most definitely a question for your Naturopathic Doctor.
