Is splenda made from natural sugar? My doctor said that I can have some but that's is best not to overdue it. I also read in one of my books that splenda is okay in moderation and that if you must use an 'artificial' sweetener, it's better to use splenda than something like an equal or sweet-n-low.

I have read that Splenda does not get absorbed by the body and that it has been used safely in other countries for years. I use it in moderation. You can always ask your doctor what he/she thinks. Mine said that it was okay to have some and I am much earlier on - 6 weeks.

I am greatful for Splenda. I keep reading that it is safe during pregnancy. My doctor said to only stay away from saccharin, which is Sweet'N Low.

According to the FDA and international authorities, Splenda is completely safe for pregnant and nursing women, as well as children. Some suggest a limit of 5 mg a day, but a normal person's diet will fall far short of that. Just don't let sweets and junk food replace whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and healthy proteins! (Of course, that is good advice for anyone!) Here's the link to the fda study: http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/tpsucral.html

My answer is in response to Dee (4/11/05). Thank you for pointing me in the right direction to read about the FDA's approval of sucralose (splenda). I just want to make a correction to something you quoted from the research. The approved amount is 5mg per kg of body weight. For example I weigh 118 lbs, which equals 53.5 kg. I can therefore consume 267 mg per day, which equals 1/2 tsp per day. I have been currently consuming 1 tbs 3 days a week in a wheat smoothie that I make for breakfast, which is way over the recommended amount. I will be cutting that down to 1/2 tsp from now on and possibly using a vanilla yogurt instead of plain to avoid using sucralose all together. Anyways, thanks for the link and I hope the correction helps.

I heard NOT to use sweet and low because it contains saccarin which is bad for the fetus. Splenda is heard to be ok in moderation.

I don't think the FDA tells the whole truth sometimes. Splenda may be perceived to be okay today - but who knows if 10 years down the line it will be linked to something like Cancer.
According to the FDA and international authorities, Splenda is completely safe for pregnant and nursing women, as well as children.
don't forget that the FDA also approved many things without proper testing and that has resulted in many deaths.
