Does anyone know what the effects of too much folate are? It seems everything these days is fortified with folate, and any supplements you take have the upper limit, so if you're going to take more than one supplement you are taking too much folate!

I was tested for my folate levels the other day as we have been on the IVF programme for 8 years & taking folate all this time,my folate level was 3 times over the recomended limite. My doctor told me not to take any vitiams at all as most contain folic acid I asked if it would cause any problems & she did not give me an ideal answer. Do you have any more info?

My doctor recommends at least 1 mg (1000 mcg) of folate. The daily recommended dose is only 400 mcg. I don;t know about anything over 1 mg.

i was talking to a friend who has diabetes, and when she was pregnant she saw alot of specialists, and they all told her that the more folic acid the better. she was taking her prenatal vitamin plus 2 mg more per day. i guess studies have shown that babies who get lots of folic acid are smarter.

Well I've just done my nutrition exam and in it I had to write part of an essay on folic acid. As it turns out some women have a condition (that there are no tests to show it) where they don't adsorb folic acid properly, therefore they require large doses, many times the RDI, before and during pregnancy to acquire the correct amount of folic acid - which is why (getting back to my original question) the folic acid supplements are so many times the RDI. For people who don't have this condition having over the RDI for folic acid is not detrimental.
So there we go, I just answered my own question :o)
