I am in my 8th week of prenancy and all I have been craving is canned tuna. i recently heard that tuna is not good for you while pregnate. is this true? If it is not safe, why is it not safe?

They say the mercury content is unsafe and can be pa__sed on to the baby. I have hear the light kind is lower in mercury than the white or albacore. If you can find wild canned salmon, that would probably be a better choice.

Hi Angie, I too love Tuna!!! My doctor said I can consume the small tins of tuna up to 3 or 4 times per week. Hope this helps.

Lisa is correct, you can have the canned light tuna - but you shouldn't have more than 6 ounces a week -that's like 2 cans.

Apparently, the tuna they use for the canned tuna are very small tuna who would have consumed very small amounts of mercury. That's why you are safe to eat a couple cans of tuna a week. However, the pieces of tuna you buy from your fish monger come from large tuna that would have consumed much more mercury. That's the tuna to avoid while pregnant.
