Speak to your doctor but most will tell you to eat a balanced diet (as we should normally) but to stay away from certain foods such as soft cheeses and processed meat. Im sure some preg books should give you an example menu or even do a google search.

You should stay balanced, with plenty of folic acid, but realistically my diet regime was whatever I could keep down!

Hi, I am 5 weeks pregnant, when i found this out my doctor just said to do everything as i was doing before- is this normal? Before i was hardly eating anything, watching my weight, eating little or no fruit veges, hardly any meat- Is it that you only have to eat right after 8 weeks? Why did my doctor say that. this seems strange to me, anyone got any advice?
Thanks

I'm now 11 weeks along and still not keeping to any "diet" as such. I have been plagued with morning sickness for weeks and it lasts all day so for now I eat whatever will stay down. I do try to slip in my fruits/fruit juice and vegetables where possible, sometimes the acid from fruits is too much though. My doctor just told me to check that I am eating or drinking pasteurized stuff. I read up about the rest in books like "What to expect when you're expecting", this one has an excellent diet in it called the Best Odds Diet and the other book with a few helpful tips here and there is "Your pregnancy week by week". Hope this helps, good luck to you.

I forgot to mention that it's important to read about the safety of eating fish, mayonaise, soft cheese and sweetners (aspartame). These are some of the things I am either eating in moderation (like cod fish) or avoiding completely (like mayonaise). Check with your doctor and do some reading to see what the best course of action is for you. Some of the above are debatable that's why I say to read about them first and then make up your mind. Again, good luck : )

Hi kellybelly, have a look in the Pregnancy and Diet section on this site, it's very very helpful. Also if you can get your hands on books like "what to expect when you're expecting" or "pregnancy week by week" they have a lot of useful advice. You will definitely find that you get lots of conflicting information, just recently the question about mayonnaise came up and there are many different answers, some doctors say it's ok because there is so little egg in it and others say that it is not ok because any amount of uncooked egg is bad because of Salmonella. Just read, read, read and then you will be able to make informed decisions for yourself. If you need any help feel free to email me at randenfonseca@msn.com
