Caffeine increases the time that a fetus stays awake in utero. Fetal growth takes place during the time that the fetus sleeps. You can stunt its growth with too much caffeine.

I get weird looks from people when I drink tea or coffee, which is usually 1-2 cups a day but I see other pregos chowing down on chocolate all the time and there is plenty of caffeine in that but nobody seems to judge them.

I don't think 1-2 cups is excessive. If you go the march of dimes website (www.marchofdimes.com), they have a chart with the recommended levels of common "no-no's". People will always judge and point fingers. I used to drink 1/2 cup of coffee while pregnant, and would suck my stomach in so I wouldn't get dirty looks.
