Slow Rising HCG Levels

I wanted to update everyone on my situation as maybe it will help someone else out there searching for answers. I first posted on April 1st when I was just 5 weeks pregnant and started bleeding with slow rising hcg levels. For two weeks my Doc thought I would likely miscarry. At 7 weeks I found myself in the ER with severe left-sided pain (still bleeding heavy). At this point an ultrasound was done and nothing was seen in the uterus; however, hcg levels still going up so it was ruled an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy. I was treated with the drug methotrexate which basically interferes with cellular growth of the fetus. The first dose didn't work so I was given a second dose. Five days later my tube ruptured and I was back in the ER. I was bleeding internally and had to have emergency surgery to remove the left tube and my precious baby who held on for 9 weeks. I went through 4 antagonizing weeks of first not knowing and then being scared to death of losing a tube. Every worst case scenario happened in my case. I just wanted to share because I want to make sure those out there with slow-rising hcg levels (good indicator of ectopic) explore this scenario. I think because miscarriages are so common and ep's are not this diagnosis is an afterthought. Goodluck to you all and I hope your outcomes are better than mine.

Hi, Emily. I am so sorry that you had to go through such torture! I can't believe they didn't check your tubes via ultrasound (is it possible?) the first time you ended up in the er. Although your story has a tragic ending, it's good that you posted it for others to read and learn from it. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi. Just an update to my post on 5/23. By some miracle my hcg level jumped to 9884! It now appears to be doubling like it should and I'm slowly starting to get some early pregnancy symptoms. I'm still a little afraid but much more confident than before. I hope this little bit of info helps encourage others, as I have been encouraged by reading some of the others postings on this site. If you look up hcg factual info on the web it's quite scary and seems that if your levels are low or aren't doubling when they should, you are doomed. I've found many of your postings inspirational and for that, I am grateful. I am happy that we have a place to discover real life scenarios.

I am glad there is something out there regarding hcg levels! I have a blood test done last Wed as 69 and Fri 116. My doctor says it's a bit low, and let me do another 2 sets of test this week. I am scared to death, and the not knowing is killing me. I'd rather know one way or the other! :( Is there any healthy babies with slow rising hcgs out there?

Wow, thats great. I am going through the same thing. I went in to do a blood test of my HCG levels on 6/13 and the doc said that I was about 5 1/2 weeks and levels were at 4,900. Went back on 6/15 to see if it was rising and it did but not what the doc expected, it only rised 1,700 more. I will be going in 6/17 again for another HCG test to see what is going on cause I am going to loose it. I just had a miscarriage in Feb of 2005 and don't think I can do it again. I really need some prayers. I hope everything turns out okay for you and for myself.

My wife and I have experienced several miscarriages during our 14 year struggle with infertility. My heart and prayers go out to all of you who are trying to have a child. Several years ago my wife experienced a pregnancy where her HCG levels plateaud at 750 for 6 days during weeks 5-6. Unfortunately, we never saw anything but an empty sac (up to 6 weeks) and she eventually miscarried. I am curious to know if any one has experienced a leveling off of HCG during weeks 5 and 6 with no signs of a fetus (just an empty sac) and had things eventually turn around for the better, resulting in a healthy birth. My wife is currently pregnant and though things look better this time around, we are still somewhat concerned. Best of luck to all and keep the faith. We were blessed with a son in 2003, 12 years and 6 IVFs after trying to start our family. Miracles do happen. Have faith that no matter what, our babies are in God's hands, and those are pretty good hands to be in.

I too have low HCG level and I'm scared. I am 39 years old and this is my first baby. After testing the first time, my HCG level was up to 2518. That was last Friday. On Monday I started light cramping and seeing a little bit of brown blood on the tissue when I went to the bathroom. Tuesday the cramping and the spotting continued. Today (Wednesday) I had another blood test done, and my HCG level was only up to 4821, not doubling as much as the dr would have liked to see. I am going back on Friday to see if it doubled. My prayers are with all of you, and I'm encouraged by some of the better outcomes that I've read on this forum, but also the not so good. It comforts me to know I am not going through this alone and if things go not according to plan, there may be another chance.

sounds similar to me, hcg didn't double etc and had normal early scan at 7wks. wasn't until after i had low fluid at 13 weeks and another scan at 16 weeks i found out i was carrying a triploidy syndrome (too many chromasones). the baby would not have lived and was removed at 18 weeks. but it also seems common to have levels that don't double and still be normal so good luck to you.

melanie - July 15

I am also in hcg hell, i had ivf w/pgd so i know there is no chromosomal problem, but my level did not double between 18 days post ovulation and 20. i can't have an ultrasound for another week . . . statistically in 85% of successful pregnancies the values doubel at this stage but i cannot for the life of me find the answer to the question, "in what percent of pregnancies in which the values do NOT double does the woman go on to have a successful pregnancy?"

Nicole - July 15

Danny and Melanie, thank you so much for answering. I have not found the answer to that question either Melanie, it seems that the outcome is random. If you read PP's postings she's had similar issues but is carrying a healthy baby, other ladies have not had that opportunity. What is encouraging is these women do not seem to give up hope and pull themselves together and try again. My prayers are with you while we go through this. Like one of the postees said, God knew us before we were born so He knows our little babies, and we have to trust that there is a reason for everything. I am going in for more bloodwork today, and will report tonight. Blessings to you.

Nicole - July 15

Level was only up to 6980 after two days, better than nothing but still not to the satisfaction of my doc. Ultrasound next week. I don't know what to think, so I'm just not going to think anything right now. Have a lovely weekend !

Hi. I feel for all of you going through this. I would just like to say that my 21 year old daughter had a baby last year. She went through a roller coster ride with hcg levels (I don't recall what they were now, sorry). Hers rose very quickly, then dropped unexpectedly. Twins were discussed, and an ultrasound was done. Things looked normal though. The MD was concerned that the sac might have too much fluid, but we just waited to see. At 26 weeks, she thought her water had broken, and rushed in. They told her the placenta seemed full and healthy and that it might have just leaked somewhat. At 39 weeks, she delivered a beautiful baby girl (our first grandchild!). But a week after the baby was born, my daughter seemed to be declining. She lost all energy, turned very pale, and continued to swell in her left leg as she did in pregnancy. We were dressing to go to the OB when she called me to the bathroom. She had just delivered a complete placenta with an undeveloped cell ma__s in it, a week after the baby was born! The MD was very surprised, but felt this would explain the odd test results, the "broken water" episode, and other oddities about this pregnancy. Seems the other sac and cells were hidden somehow behind the first, and was never detected on 3 ultrasounds! The blood work indicated twins at one point, but then it was normal shortly thereafter. You never know what is truly going on, even with the best of medical care. I hope you all find peace with your situations, and best of luck to you all.

Jennifer - August 9

Hi. I had my first pregnancy test on August 4 and my hcg level was 30. I am estimating that conception occurred on approximately July 23. (I received an IUI insemination on July 21). I went in again for my next test on August 6 and my level was at 50. However, when I went in for my most recent test, yesterday August 8, my level had dropped to 49. My sister, an ob/gyn is convinced that this is just a pregnancy that did not take. (She says they do not refer to it as a miscarriage this early). I go in for another test tomorrow. I am really clinging to hope but deep down inside I have a feeling that my sister may be right. Has anyone had a similar experience where their level has dropped early in pregnancy and then risen again? Thanks to all who respond, Jennifer
