Choosing A Formula

Can I choose whatever one I want to for my baby or do I have to listen to what the pediatrician tells me to use?

Your doctor will suggest what kind of formula would be best, and of course you can decide for yourself, but I would also consider what your doctor has to say. I use Enfamil with Iron. What did you want to use?

I use nestle good start I know theres the big debate about the company but my doc recomended it. It is less gas forming and my daughter is doing great on it but listen to your doc and read up on things.

I've always had good luck out of Similac. Of course, you pediatrician will receommend formula, but you can use whichever seems to work best.

I went with my docs recommendation at first, but my daughter was so constipated on all the ones he suggested. Went went from Enfamil Lipil to Enfamil Lacto Free to Similac...nothing worked. So I switched her to Nestle Good Start and it worked like a charm. The FDA puts such strict restrictions of formula that as long as you're using the same type of formula (such as iron enriched) I don't think there's a huge difference. What I wouldn't do on your own is switch from iron enriched to Soy or something like that.

Some hospitals usually use one specific brand at first unless your child has some reaction to it. What Ive found the most common formula at hospitals are Enfamil with Iron. My daughter was on b___st milk and formula at first and is now only on Enfamil Lipil with Iron. Depending on how she does in the next week or so we may switch her over to Enfamil Lipil with Low Iron. Ive heard that too much iron can cause constipation and she doesnt have bowel movements on a daily or every other day basis. Sometimes it will be three days before she poops and she is only about 24 days old. And when she does go its extremly watery. We may also decide to try soy since both her father and I have a small milk intolerance problem. Our DR's tell us its because we are native american. Definelty do your research and pick a formula you like and trust.

I use Similac Advance with iron he's doing very well on it. He was 2 weeks yesterday! About the pooping thingy he didn't poop for a day so I called the birthing unit and the nurse suggested I put a thermometer in his b___t to get things moving and it sure did! It worked great....Good luck
