Im so worried. I was cutting my daughters fingernails while she was sleeping and she did one of those startle things and I cut the tip of her thumb. It only bled a very small amount and she has stopped crying but what should I do to make sure it heals ok? She is only 7 weeks so I am not sure if I can put Neosporin or anything on it. I feel horrible and have been crying ever since I did it this morning and just need to do everything I can to help her to make up for it.

Oh, poor baby:) I mean you!! It feels so awful when you hurt your little one. I think it is worse for the mom than the baby. I heard that there are little emory filing boards for nails, so you don't have to clip. Also, our ped recommended that we peel his nails with our fingers instead of risking it with clippers.

When my daughter was almost three months old, our kitten scratched her hand pretty badly. I put neosporin on it, with no problems, and no scars. Fingertips heal the fastest of any body part, and infants, who are growing so fast, seem to heal much faster and with almost no scars. I bet by now your daughter has forgotten all about it. She's at an age where her hands are not likely to get that dirty, so I'm sure if you just wash it with water it will heal fine. (And give it a kiss to make it better, it's amazing how well that works once they're toddlers, and in the meantime it will make you feel better.)

Bite her nails with your teeth! It works!!! Or like E said, you can also use Emory boards...I wouldn't use any clipping devices, because baby's fingers are so small and it's hard to tell where their skin and nail meet..

Thanks everyone. From now on, I will file or peel her nails rather than use a clippers. Just the shock of the pain in her face when she was crying was more than I could handle and I will not risk that again! She seems alot better and I was so releived when she started cooing and laughing like her usual self again. I have rinsed her finger and it is starting to look better as well. :-)

OMG I did the same thing!! I felt like I'd cut her finger off!! I haven't been able to go near her with the clippers since and her nails were getting longer then mine! My sister took pity on me and got a couple of them for me. The peeling thing is easier said then done too, you can peel too much and that hurts too. When I "got some meat" as my sisters Filipina MIL says, it bled a tiny bit but it was healed completely in about two days. You couldn't even see where I cut her after three. It amazes me how fast those little creatures heal!! She's gonna need that ability around her clumsy-a__s mother a lot I think... Poor baby.

Ohhh, don't worry about it. I use baby clippers on my 3 month old son and they work pretty well. Also, neosporin is fine to use on the little ones.

It makes you feel so bad when you cause your baby any discomfort or pain. When my son was a couple of weeks old I reached over him while I was changing his diaper and caught my wedding ring on his umbilical cord scab. It ripped off a litlle and it started bleeding. I was so upset. I brought him to the pediatrician and he coteriesed it. I felt like I was going to puke when I did it.

I just did the same thing to my almost 3 month old son, except I cut 2 of his fingers:(I started crying too.He was crying so hard nothing calmed him for almost 20 min.I just gave him some infant tylenol to ease any pain and washed them with a warm wash cloth-poor baby.I think he is ok though because he is sleeping peacfully now!!
