Drugs And Tearing

Hello mommies! I'm 34 weeks pregnant and I was just wondering if taking the epidural has an effect on tearing?? Also, for those of you that did tear, would have rather had an episiotomy?? I know that the epidural numbs you and sometimes you can't feel much when your pushing and that it could cause tearing if you push too hard and get the baby out too fast, but is it going to happen no matter what, because if it will, I don't want to feel it when it happens :)

I had an epidural, and I did tear quite badly. The good thing was, I couldn't feel it happening, which was what I was worried about. It didn't feel too bad afterwards and healed in a couple of weeks.

i tore and i didn't have an epidural. i had a shot of staidall but it only last a few hours. i was drug free when it came to the pushing part and i don't even remember tearing. i don't think it makes much of a difference.

I didn't have any medicine and I tore. No, I do not wish I had an episiotomy. I didn't feel the tear, could have cared less...just wanted to push the baby out.

I had an epidural and an episiotimy. My doc gave me an extra shot of Lidocaine when he cut me to make sure I wouldn't feel it. I was like Lissi and felt great after a week or two. Good luck and congrats!!

I had no meds and I tore, but the doc said I would have needed more st_tiches if I had had an episiotomy, so I figured that was good. My son shot out like a bullet once I got past the head, I wouldn't have had time for an epis. anyway. I'm glad I didn't have one. And I only pushed for maybe 10 minutes. I was really able to work with my body since I could feel everything

I have torn all 3 times! The first one, I had an epidural and the last two were unmedicated v____al deliveries. So I don't think the epidural has any effect at all on tearing. As far as the episiotomy goes, a big fat NO! You don't know you're going to tear until the last minute anyway, so you may as well just try and avoid it. The best advice I can give you is to listen to your body, as well as the nurses. When they tell you to slow down, do so asap. Panting (as opposed to pushing) is also very effective against tearing. I wish you luck!
