SIDS Gasp

Ok, so this is like the forbidden topic... mostly because it is every mothers biggest fear when they have a child under 1. But I was wanting to know if anyone knows of any sites that you can get statistics on SIDS. For example what is the difference (in numbers) between tummy and back sleeping? Is the highest rate still between 2-4 months? things like that, because as far as i am concerned being educated is the best cure for my anxiety..

I don't know any sites on SIDs...maybe look up SIDs on a search engine like yahoo or google. I do know that although it happens, it's pretty uncommon. You can do a numerous amount of things to help prevent it such as, keeping your babys room at a nice temperature...not hot. Don't put blankets or toys around your baby in the crib while he/she is sleeping because of suffocation. I would have to say the highest rate is between newborn to 3 months. Babies are starting to develop around 4 months and could probably pull a blanket off of their face. Those are just my opinions though. If your baby likes a pacifier...that also helps breathing, the baby will have something to remind him/her to suck and breathe. If my babies room was cold when he slept, I would wrap him up in a tight blanket so he couldn't get it somehow over his face. Just little precautions like that. I also checked on him when I woke up in the mornin or went to bed. I kept a ba__sinet by my bed so I knew he was breathing etc. Don't stress too much, just take these precautions.

Dr. Sears says that cosleeping reduces the amount of SIDS. The baby feel someone moving/breathing next to them and they remember to breath. I also read that smoking marijuana during pregnancy greatly increases the risk of your baby dying of SIDS. I don't know of any good sites off hand for you.

I actually heard that co sleeping increases SIDS b/c parents can roll over on them.

Smoking during and after pregnancy can increase SIDS. The other ladies is right. Try not to stress over SIds. Good luck!!!

I always used a crocheted blanket for my daughter, because it is warm but still has all those open spaces to breathe through. some of the things I've read suggest that keeping the baby too warm can be a factor...don't dress the baby more warmly than you are comfortable being dressed. I've also read that keeping the baby in your bedroom (but not your bed) helped prevent it.

Hi, having an uncle that dies from SIDS has made me so nervous even though everything I've read has said it's not hereditary. What I've read said the highest risk months are 2-4 months, smokers' babies had a higher chance of it especially if they smoked in the house, babies of very young mothers were at higher risk, overheating was a factor as well and, of course, tummy sleeping. One of the theories of the tummy sleeping was that they slept to deeply and if the baby had a form of sleep apnea they wouldn't be able to wake themselves. Co-sleeping also seemed to decrease the risk if they were not in the same bed. I've read other sites that say if they were to die from SIDS the death is instant and not "forgetting to breathe." There are cases where babies die in the arms of their parent, in the car, during the day etc. etc. etc. SIDS is not caused by one thing that they can pinpoint. When an infant dies, if they can't figure out why it died, that's when they call it SIDS. Suffocation and choking do not "cause" SIDS. So, in the end, they still don't know what it is, they just know what it isn't. I wish everyone fat, healthy babies. :)

I would do a google search. There are plenty of sites. My halfsister died of SIDS, so i know your fear. I always check my 6month old. My dr said when they start to roll over the chances reduce greatly. Also, DO NOT sleep with your child, keep all blankets and toys out of the crib. Best of luck

I'm so glad I read this post. I have been careful to always lay my baby on his back (he's 1 month old). But, I have been wrapping one of those fleece type baby blankets and he seems to be hot and sweaty when he wakes up! I just never thought about that contributing to sids! Does anyone know about these blankets or use them? I swear when he sleeps with it, it puts him out immediately cause it's SO cozy.

Maddie, maybe put less clothing on him when you swaddle him. He should be warm and cozy but if he's sweating at the back of his neck he's too warm. Maybe just put him in a diaper shirt or a regular t-shirt before you wrap him up. Or crank the a/c. lol
