Terrible Napper

My son is 6 months old and not a good napper. I have trouble getting him to nap all the time. Sometimes letting him cry it out works but sometimes he wails and I can't bear it. Yesterday he threw up the bottle he had prior to trying to settle him and I had to put him in the car to get him to nap. he usually goes down at bedtime (after his bath every night) without a fuss....maybe 5 mins of fussing or less...Is this normal? Will he ever be a better napper. Maybe he is teething? Help...

I let my son tell me when he wants to nap (he lets me know by rubbing his eyes, getting really fussy, and/or having droopy/redish eyes). I'm sure you know your baby better than anyone else does so let him decide when he wants to nap and he'll let you know. Usually babies around your son's age take two naps or maybe little naps throughout the day, "time" all his naps so you'll have a better idea of when he is tired or not. I personally don't think letting a baby "cry it out" is beneficial, a baby crys because he/she needs something and for a parent to respond to that, it gives the baby a sense of stability. A baby can't communicate any other way than crying. Now when a 2 year old cries and cries, maybe it's best for them to cry it out...they should be talking rather than crying. Don't worry, he'll let you know when he is tired if you closely watch his motions. I usually take my son swimming, walk around at the park, etc. and by that time, we've been out long enough to tire him out. Good luck and hope this helps ya!!

Have you tried a baby swing? My daughter would always nap in her swing. We were both sad when she outgrew it. Your son really could be teething. When my daughter was teething (early, at 3 mos) I could feel bumps on her gums above where the teeth were coming in.

I agree with JBear. Try the swing...it worked wonders with my daughter. It is also possible of teeth coming in. Check his gums. Is his eating slowed down...that is a sign of teething. Give him some infant's motrin and see if that helps. Then you might have your answer.

Oh, I had forgotten...when they start teething, it's like the drool faucet gets turned on. So if he's suddenly drooling a lot along with the fussiness, it's probably teething.

At that age my son had the exact same problem. We thought it was teeth, because he got his first two at four months, but after a couple of weeks we figured it out by accident. He couldn't sleep when it was so light out. He had no problems at night time, but during the day his room was very sunny and he just couldn't settle down. We covered his windows with some comforters until we got him new curtains. Oddly enough, he recently moved to his toddler bed and will not sleep without his bedroom door open and the bathroom light on (but he's not potty trained yet).
