by first foods do you mean all the strained and pureed stuff? At 8 or nine months i would say trying some of the chunkier stuff would be a good idea. Does he have any teeth? You could try him with cheerio's or arrowroot cookies soon if he does. Start with those very slowly and watch very carefully though, but it will jump start his hand mouth coordination. If he doesn't have any teeth, maybe stick to things that are a little softer. The mixed veggies from heinz i believe has some potatoes in it that are pretty hard, so maybe stay away from that for a while. If you make your own food, picking up a few jars of 2nd (8 months and up)step baby foods would give you a good idea on what kinds of textures are recommended for that age and what your son can and can't handle. Good luck, and have fun :)

I don't really watch the lables for first, second, or third foods. I personally think they are all of the same consistency. My son just turned 10 months (he is really 9 months because he was a preemie) and he still doesn't have teeth, I've give him cut up pieces of banana, gerber finger foods, baby cookies, etc. (I watch him when I feed him as well). When I feed my son the baby food, I let him tell me when he doesn't want anymore, he usually keeps his mouth closed or starts rasberrying the food at me haha. Just watch your sons motions, he'll let ya know!! Good luck.

My daughter is 6 mo. and i give her 1 of the 2nd foods one a day. She was still hungry after the 1st foods but with the 2nd foods she eats like 75 % of it which is still more than the 1st foods serving. Doctor said I could. I just say observe ur baby, if ur baby still wants to eat more then the 1st food serving start getting the second foods. A baby will always let u know when their hungry or not.
