Some people co-sleep instead of having a bed for their baby. You could also use a pack and play, but the mattress in it is a board with about an inch of foam rubber, covered by vinyl...so it might not be that comfortable once your baby has a little weight. For me the crib was the best choice, because I know it's safe for my baby, and also because, once your child is mobile, it's good to know that they're confined while you're asleep. I bought my crib secondhand for $35, and just bought a new mattress for it. I was really broke when I had my first baby, so I got a crib and mattress at the thrift store for $17. If it's the cost of the crib, you can find one a lot cheaper than the fancy ones you see in the babys r us catalog. Your baby won't know if the crib cost you $50 used or $500 new...just make sure if you get a used one, that all of its hardware is there and you know how to a__semble it, and that it's not that old (they usually have a date label) and that the bars are no more than 2 1/4 inch apart.
