I have a 8 month old son (turning 9 months soon) but i have br___tfed him since he was born and so he has been sleeping in the same bed as me since he came home from the hospital...but i just recently got him to sleep in his crib but one problem....he will ONLY go to sleep on his tummy...he doesnt sleep or want to sleep on his back unless he rolls onto it when he is sleeping....but i always hear "dont put your baby to sleep on his tummy, always put him to sleep on his back" but i just worry that im doing something wrong....what should i do? just continue what im doing? (he also shares a room with me so its not like he is in a completely different room)...also im just worried about the whole SIDS thing....and how sleeping on the tummy can increase the chance....i mean a lot of people say its fine because he can roll over easily or move his head if he cant breath or anything so i have really nothing to worry about....but what should i do?...this is my first baby and im only 17 (yes i know very young) but i just really need advice!! thanks :)

I would put him down on his back and if he wants to sleep on his tummy let him roll over. You can also try swaddleing VERY tightly so it makes him think he is laying on his tummy. I really wouldnt put him down on his tummy. Good luck.

My mom had five kids and every one of us slept on our tummy. If your son can roll over easily let him sleep how he wants because he can always flip over the other way. You know your son the best, better than the doctors, so do what you think is right. I've read a lot about SIDs and your son is out of the SIDs age range as well so don't worry too much (it's more of a worry at the newborn stage). I'm 18 so I also know how being a first time parent is, ask as many questions as you need, I do it too!

i totally agree with stephanie. Lay him on his back, he is probably rolling on his own now, so he can roll to where he is comfortable. By that age my son was already sleeping on his face with his bum in the air, so on his tummy can't be any worse :P

N and Steph have it right. Once your baby is able to turn over the choice is no longer yours as to how he will sleep. He's almost out of the SIDS risk "zone" too. The closer they get to a year, the lower the chances of it. The highest risk for SIDS are babies between 2 and 4 months. Having him sleep in your room, in his own bed is the best thing you can do to lower the risk. It sounds to me like you are doing a great job!! My daughter is five months old and I'm freaked out too AND I'm twice your age. Don't go making me look too bad... :)

He is going to get to the age when he's turning over on his on. SIDs risk lower when the baby gets older. You can lower the SIDS risk by not smoking or having him around smoke. No comforters and stuff animals in the crib. Make sure the crib sheet is tight on the bed. No manner what age you are, parents worry about SIDS.....You sound like you are doing everything right. Breast-feeding alone lower the risk of Sids and illness. Stay strong and enjoy that little guy. They grow so fast. Take care

I was just talking to our new pediatrician and he said the baby needs to sleep on his back until he's six months old. They sell sleep positioners, but I had one for my daughter, and it only keeps them in place when they're really little. I think your son is probably big enough and strong enough to rearrange himself into whatever positon is most comfy for him.
