Stretching Of The Uterine Membrane

I am 40 weeks pregnant and showing no sign of labour. The doctor said he will preform a stretching of the uterine membrane and I was wondering what that is and what they do. Does it hurt.

Basically the dr uses his/her fingers to reach the cervix and sweep and stretch around it. I am 39 weeks and had mine done one monday the 7th and yes it hurts! (Sorry I can't be more positive) but then on tuesday at 11 pm I lost my mucous plug.... I'm still waiting for regular contractions and more signs of labor though.
