Can getting a tattoo while pregnant hurt the baby? I started my lower back piece a week ago and just found out I am pregnant with my second today. I want to finish the little bit left, but I don't want to hurt the baby.

In most states it is againist the law to tattoo a pregnant women. The ink can get into your blood and effect the baby. That is what I hear anyways.

SOMETIMES PEOPLE GET REALLY SICK FROM THE INK GETTING IN THEIR BLOODSTREAM AND IF THAT HAPPENED TO YOU IT SEEMS LIKE IT WOULD HAPPEN TO THE BABY TOO. I HAVE 1 TATTOO AND I WANT ANOTHER ONE BUT I AM GOING TO WAIT TIL THE BABY IS BORN JUST TO BE SAFE. YOU COULD ASK YOUR DOCTOR AND SEE WHAT HE SAYS.

My boyfriend is a tattoo artist, so naturally I want more tattoos but will wait until after pregnancy. It is not worth risking your health or your baby's!

I am a tatoo artist with my own business. Before I became an artist, I got my tat2 while pregnant. Everything was fine. I will and have tat2d pregnant people with no effects to mother or baby. In my opinion, the only risk in things like Hep B, etc. However, I would probably talk to your artist and see what see/he says. Not all share my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions.....haha

I was a body piercer/tattoo artist before I became pregnant. The reasons why you shoulden't do either while pregnant is because your body can go into shock because of either the pain or from having a foregin object placed through your flesh. This shock can put un-wanted stress on the baby, not to mention that there is a risk factor of Hepat_ts and other infections that you can recieve from the process. It's best to wait until after delivery.

There is always the risk of infection, but no, contrary to what those other people are saying the ink CAN NOT get into the bloodstream. That is NOT where the ink goes. When you get tattooed, it is going to the 2nd layer, not into your blood. That would be lethal.
Although there would be no chemicals harming your baby, it is not the best idea to get one done while pregnant because of the stress and pain. It would be the stress and pain that would harm your child. A few of my friends are tattoo artists and they refuse to tattoo (or pierce) a pregnant woman on those grounds alone.
Once again, it's the STRESS that COULD harm your baby, ink DOES NOT go into your bloodstream

Ink does NOT go in your blood...thats so dumb. The only problem is your immune system is already working so hard, theres no need to add another thing. HOWEVER I think people are way to uppity about pregnancy, if you like tattoos and you know how to handle it...GET IT.. If you know how to snowboard without falling and keep an eye out for the crazy kids that like to smash into you...Then GO....especially when your young! Our bodies are healthy and strong a little tattoo wont hurt...just my personal opinion

Ok to be clear, ink does not get into your blood stream. The needles on a tattoo machine are designed to go through the top two layers of your skin, not deep enough to enter your blood stream.
There is a increased chance of infection while pregnant, if you dont take care of a tattoo.
The main reason most tattoo artists wont tattoo a pregnant woman is that tattoos cause trauma to your body, and when youre body feels pain, your body reacts in a physiological manner, and that stress and tension could harm your child.
Listen why not just wait? Its nine months. I am pregnant and want to get tattooed, but I will wait until the baby is born. There is no reason not to.

I know this post is hella old but, ive got multiple tattoos while pregnant. Nothing has gone wrong. Its just like getting tattooed when you dont know you are pregnant. The risk of infection is the same risk when you get tattooed and you're not pregnant. Im about to get another tattoo today && I am 4 months pregnant. Its just like when they say not to get piercings when you're pregnant or not to bleach your hair. Doctors dont always tell you the truth either they tell you what the pharamcies want them to. I've gotten tattooed, pierced, and done my hair ALL sorts of colors while being pregnant and my first son is okay, Hes even advanced at that. People need to quit being so closed minded about everything.
