Progesterone Level

Hi Heidi and board, I have been writing with my pregancy ups and downs, first they thought I had a blighted ovum, then they found a heartbeat but it was slow, then hormones started falling and today no heartbeat. I was supposed to be 8 weeks tomorrow. I scheduled the D&C for tomorrow because after that my doc will be on vacation and I really don't like any of her a__sociates. I started spotting last night though, and now there are some clots in it and it is getting redder. In a way, I am hoping to pa__s everything tonight so I won't have to go through with the D&C. Mostly I am just scared of what will happen either way. Anyone who wants to share stories please feel free. Just needed to put the story out there for people who understand.

To all of you who question progesterone levels and spotting during your first trimester.....I'm four weeks into my fourth pregnancy and have experienced all. I have three healthy children, all of whom I had to take progesterone supplements for and I also spotted for all of them. Typically the spotting started around - 5weeks and ended around 15 weeks. Currently I am taking 800mg of progesterone daily. I just received my call from my doc. and my levels were right where they should be at this time. Rest a__sured ladies you and your babes will be fine. Take care of yourselves try not to stress too much, enjoy this time of your lives and take your progesterone!!!!!!!!

it's me again. I wanted to add that I had two miscarriages, then a healthy pregnancy, then two more miscarriages, then two healthy pregnancies. This is my eighth pregnancy. Like I said earlier, I'm four weeks preg., two days ago progesterone levels were 7.5 was told needed to be at least 20. So that's when the docs. increased my prog. suppl. form 200 daily to 800 daily. Today the prgoesterone was 59. The strength you generate will surprise you. From yourself, loved ones, and your faith.

I have recently switched from OTC progesterone cream to compounded prescription progesterone cream. I raised my 7 dpo levels from 4.7 and 5.97 to 13.97! So I am happy. However, after 6 doc_mented micarriages and many chemical pregnancies, I am without success. There is nothing else wrong with me (other than my age) or my DH according to all the tests. My dr suggested yesterday that I start using the cream 2 days before ovulation. I told him that most people feel that using it pre-ovulation could delay ovulation. But he said that my level will not climb high enough to stop it from happening, and that by waiting until 3 dpo, myr levels may not be high enough to maintain a pregnancy. My question to you is have you heard of anyone doing this with success?

In response to whoever was asking about stories of mc's and D&C's, I am 32 and have been pregnant 4 times-2 mc's and two beautiful sons. The first misscarriage happened at 8 weeks and happened naturally which took about a week for all bleeding to stop. The second misscarriage was terrible. I had a missed misscarriage and had to undergo an emergency D&C due to hemorraging. I was only given a local anesthetic(in the cervix-OUCH!!!) due to the emergency situation, and was able to feel all the sc___ping, tugging and pulling that my Doctor had to do. It had been 2 months since my misscarriage and I am still having a hard time dealing with it. One day I was pregnant and the next I wasn't. When it happened naturally for some reason it was easier to heal both mentally and physically. The D&C hurt not only physically but mentally so if any of you have to go through a misscarriage, god forbidl, unless their is an emergent situation, please let nature and your body take care of it for you. I am trying to get pregnant again and I am on progesterone like alot of you women. I also took this after my first misscarriage-the first twelve weeks of my next pregnancy which resulted in a healthy full-term prenancy. Good luck to all of you and I will let you know if I am pregnant in two weeks-please pray for me!!

I am glad to find this board. I had a mc this summer and now I'm 9 weeks pregnant. At 6 weeks, I had my blood checked and my progesterone level was 12.7. The dr. said it should be between 11.2-19 at that point so she put me on compounded progesterone suppositories. I went in for my first ultrasound at 8 weeks and the baby looked fine and had a heartbeat. I am anxiously awaiting my next appt. Has anyone else use the compounded progesterone suppositories? A friend of mine used one that was already pre-made. I don't know which is better. Are there any bad side effects to the baby?

I am 5 weeks and 6 days into my second pregnancy through Clomid. The first ended in a loss. At the time that the loss was detected my Progesterone level went from 18 to 13. My bloodwork has been looking good this time but my level dropped this week from 23.9 to 19.7. Is this large a drop normal? We had an ultrasound yesterday and could see a sac and yolk. My Dr. wants to do another ultrasound at exactly 6 wks. I am so scared because last time I lost the baby I was 10 1/2 weeks and had we had seen the heartbeat and watched the baby move. I know that worrying will not help but how much is a normal progesterone fluctuation?

Kristen - December 29

I know how you feel. I am 6.5 weeks and I have had 3 ultrasounds and 3 rounds of bloodwork done (having 4th today). At 5 weeks I had pain on right side, dr wanted to check that hcg was doubling so I went for blood on a Tuesday then again that Thursday. HCG did double but progesterone dropped from 14.7 to 13.2 (in two days). They put me on prog suppositories 100mg once a day. Went for blood a week later and prog dropped to 10. Ultrasound showed growth but a weak heart beat at 94. I am 29 and this is my first preg. am I going to lose this baby? Please help, I am terrified.

Alora - December 29

Kristen, The way that I have been told that progesterone levels fluctuate is that anything below 10 is bad, 15 is good and 20 is great. I am also on the suppositories twice a day. I have also heard that progesterone can fluctuate depending on what time of day it is and what you have eaten. Is this your first pregnancy?

becky - December 29

Michelle-first of all I want to tell you how so very sorry I am about your misscarriage. I have had two of them and I understand how painful it is for you. The only hope I can give you is just to repeat what most of these sites say-2 out of 3 pregnancys end of in misscarriage before the 12 weeks. Also, I have had two, healthy full-term pregnancys and knowing that that was a possibility, this is what gave me the strenth to try again. You need support through this time, don't feel bad for asking for it because no-one can understand what you are feeling except for you. Not even me although I have went through this twice. Everyone handles this a different way but one thing that is very, very commen is for a women to have a misscarriage and then go on to have healthy pregnancys. Some people say that if you misscarry with first pregnancy it is kind of like a practice run for your body. I believe that everything will be wonderfull for you on your next pregnancy. Don't give up and let us know!! I will keep you in my prayers.

Again, I am here to offer up some hope as I have been posting since week five of my pg. I began spotting and went in and my progesterone had gone from 21 to 13. The dr. started me on 100mg orally twice a day, the next week it was at 15. Then she doubled the dose and the next week it was 18. She left it as it was and by week eight it had gone up to 72. I am still spotting about once a week but I have had a ultrasound each week with everything looking great. I had one today at ten weeks and the baby is looks very good and is very active. I really believe that I wouldn't had made it this far without the medicine. I do now believe that my body is beginning to take over though on its own. The dr. is not drawing my levels anymore, but I will stay on the pills until 16 weeks. Don't give up hope and if you have already had a m/c, see if you can get the suppliments prior to concieving the next time. You really need a dr. that will listen to you, I know that many dr. don't believe in progesterone suppliments. Good luck to all of you!!!!!!

Ok I went in for my 2nd ultrasound today and the baby is measuring 6 weeks exactly. We saw a heartbeat but could not measure it yet. My bloodwork came back and my progesterone is back up to 23 which is good but my HCG was around 7600 which was not quite doubling. Does anyone know if it is normal for HCG to rise significantly but not double? It would really help put my mind at ease as this is my second prenancy after 2 years of trying and my first was a loss.

becky - December 30

Alora, first of all, congrats on making it 6 weeks! Now that you have seen the heartbeat you have an 85% chance of this pregnancy continuing(per my OB GYN) Also, I don't know how normal is normal but I know that with my second full-term pregnancy, my Hcg didn't exactly double all the time. As long as you seen a rise you can be sure that baby is doing fine. I have had two misscarriages so I know how it feels to go the other way too and you seem to have all the positive symtoms for a healthy pregnancy. Keep us informed

I am delighted to have found this sight. I have been truly inspired by all of the wonderful stories. But for those that ended sadly, I feel your pain. My husband and I have been trying for a baby for about 2 years now, and we've had one miss. But in RE to the above entries this is my story: Well, it was time for my menstrual cycle and I was cramping as usual, yet I realize I am 4-5 days late. So I get anxious hoping for pegnancy, drive to the store and buy a pg test, the test read negative at first then after 20 minutes or more, I look at it and it is positive, (2 lines), imagine how I was feeling, because I thought I the results were invalid, I bought another test one day later. SAME THING happens. OK time to call the Dr. and he suggest I go in for a bloodwork. Well guess what, the test is positive and I am pregnant. My husband and I are jumping for joy, with PROMETRIUM in my medicine cabinet, (just keep reading you'll know why the progesterone in a moment.) Then, only 2-3 hours later crying my heart out: I am spotting, I am cramping, my hcg level is 20, my progesterone level is ONE (1), and I am SCARED, don't know what to do. So I wait, because that's what I am told to do (you all know what that is like, right?) But when the bleeding comes, I call the doctor back and he says that with these harmone levels I have what is called a Chemical Pregnancy which is a fertilized egg that attaches itself to the uterus but with no embryo (in other words no BABY only pieces of tissue.) The doc informed me that I would resume a regular menstrual cycle soon and needed no D&C because of the type of pregancy. More bloodwork on Monday for finality, then we'll start from scratch again. I have an existing condition of Endometriosis, not sure if it had anything to do with my harmone levels. Please do not click off on this as "Poor Taste", instead see it as being My story. I felt the need to share it. It may answer someones questions. Again I think that all your stories are of value, for we need support from each other. I wish the best for everyone, I'll let you know how things turn out on Monday.

Jean - December 31

This has been really great to read about so many women with progesterone problems. I am 5w3d and just had an u/s yesterday because bloodwork from the day before showed a level of 8 and hcg of 7248. Of course they couldn't see anything but a sack because it was too early. I scheduled another ultrasound at 7w and bloodwork in 5 more days. The doctor put me on only 50mg of progesterone suppositories twice a day. That seems low to me after reading all these stories. So I just called to talk to my doctor and their office was already closed for the holiday. I do believe that God is in control and I don't want to stress too much. I do have a 2 1/2 yr old boy and I had one miss 3 mo. ago. It was really quick, barely 5w. I believe we can find anything to worry about when we're pregnant. Good luck and prayers to all.

Hi everyone, I had low progesterone levels (8) at five weeks with my first baby, so they a__sumed luteal phase defect. I went on 100 mg of Prometrium 4 x a day. This dose seems high, but the body does not synthesize the hormone as well when you digest it vs. using the v____al cream. Now I am 5 weeks pregnant with baby #2, and I've been started on the progesterone 4 x a day again. We are waiting for the results of the blood test to see how low the progesterone was. I was also crampy all week, but so far no spotting! Best wishes to all!
