My Experience Misoprostol Cytotec For Miscarriage

Just wanted to share my experience so people can see the differences and similarities in misoprostol use.

I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum, opted to take misoprostol at 8.5 weeks. I started at 6pm on a Thursday, inserting 800mcg vaginally every 4 hours x 4 doses. I didnt start bleeding until 1:30AM. It progressively got heavier. I passed a couple pretty sizeable clots which I  assumed included the sac. I had an ultrasound scheduled for the next morning at 8:30, and a visit with my OB right after. I felt fine until I got to the appointment when I began to get shooting uterine/rectal pains. My bleeding picked up, and it made the vaginal ultrasound very awkward. When I went to visit with the OB I needed to use the restroom, and when I did I began to feel faint. My BP had been a little lower than normal (98/60) likely from blood loss. I had to stay at the office for a while, but the OB said the U/S indicated I passed the sac and only had a small clot left and he was confident I would pass it at home. It hadn't even been 2 hours since I took the last dose.

I did continue bleeding very thick and stringy blood for the next couple of days. On Sunday I developed a low grade temperature and chills/joint pain. I alerted my OB the next day and he was worried about developing an infection (which I honestly don't believe would have happened that quickly, but I'm not a physician). He sent me to the ER to get another U/S. That U/S indicated I had retained "products of conception", in other words, tissue remained in my uterus from my pregnancy. He pushed for a D&C, but I refused, ultimately believing my body would do its thing when it was ready. I AM NOT interested in surgical intervention unless completely necessary, too many risks. This was Monday. I continued to bleed Monday, no pain though. Went to bed and awoke this morning (now Tuesday) at 4AM with mild cramping. Bleeding had picked up a bit. By 5 AM I was in full blown labor. With my last successful pregnancy I labored for 10 hours unmedicated, and this was on par with that pain except on a smaller scale as my uterus was much smaller this time around without a baby in it. I got in a hot bath, partner helped me with pain relieving techniques. Extreme contractions just as if I was birthing, closer and closer together, no time for meds although I did take a Tylenol #3 which hadn't had time to kick in yet. I pulled out all my tricks from my natural child birth class, it was VERY difficult, but instanteously the pain just stopped. I had no idea why, I hadn't passed anything. Walked around for about 10 minutes to try and induce labor again, but decided to try to sit on the toilet and push even though I didn't have the urge. When I did that I passed a VERY LARGE mass. Probably about 6 inches by 3 inches. It was not clot like, it was muscle tissue like. Very fibrous. I surmise it passed through my cervix and into my vagina and my pain then stopped, but my body didn't push it out so it just sat in my vagina until I decided to try and push.

I currently have bleeding like a period. Still dark red, but thinner now, and less abundant than before I passed the product of conception. Very mild cramping, but ultimately doing pretty well. Will see OB in a couple of days to see if the tissue has all passed.

My advice is, if your goal is to pass naturally and you haven't done it immediately, don't be discouraged. Don't let the physicians make you think you are going to have some horrible experience if you don't get a D&C. Your body is amazing and this is what it was MADE to do. My OB was so insistent that I get a D&C he refused to let me try another dose of misoprostol and made me sign out of the ER against medical advice. Completely ridiculous move if you ask me, but that's his perogative. My body did what it needed to do in it's own time, and most likely yours will too.

OJU - July 5

I am so grateful to see what you have shared here. I am experiencing the second miscarriage and get so confused and worried as my sac now still no expelled yet.

OJU - July 5

Thank you soooooooooo much for sharing!

LadyO - July 28

I thought I'd share my experience with the ladies on here and anyone else going through this ordeal. This was my second miscarriage and this one has left me down but I'm confident I'll pick myself up.

I'll spare you all that happened before this but assume all the same with excitement, hope, plans. Had a bit of blood In week 5 and day 4 and then 3 days later a liner of blood overnight but I was on progesterone tablets. Througit 1 week later I had the Week 6 scan, no heartbeat but still a little early so After 7 weeks I was told I had a miscarriage and that was that.

Wait up to 2 weeks, stop tablets and it should pass naturally, if not, contact the clinic. Went back to work and 2 weeks later nothing passed. Was told to take a pregnancy test to see if the hormone level is still high. It was positive.

I went for a scan the next day which showed gestational sac but it looked like it had divided into 7 sections. I was told it was 'cystic' and similar to another ailment and could be the placenta taking over the pregnancy and trying to maintain it. In any event, it needs to be gotten out as there's definitely no baby.

I was told the options are:

1. Wait

2. Medicine - oral or vaginal

3. Minor surgery

1 wasn't an option unless I insisted on it but in their opinion I'd waited long enough. Option 2 had the lower risk, is 80-90% successful, will be painful cramps so need strong pain meds and need to be off work for minimum 2 days and after 10 days come back for a scan. Option 3 was more sure befisr it would be sorted and limited out after a few hours. This would mean anaesthesia and hospital stay for a few hours and is more successful. Had usual surgery risks - infection etc.

I went for option 2.

After taking the misoprostol at 12.30pm vaginally (because vaginally is faster), by 6pm I was cramping and needed my tabs. I wore a very heavy flow thick sanitary towel. I chose nurofen with codeine and took that with paracetamol. It worked! I felt like my bad was soaking so went to the loo. Sure enough it was drenched, I sat in the toilet and immediately I was flooding the loo with blood and then came through what felt larger than golf balls, maybe tennis balls passing right through into the toilet. Loud large plops and a very messy water closet. 3 blobs fell through. I had to flush 3 times!!  It was not painful passing but just shocking and emotional.

Then I went back to lie down and 30mins later the same feeling. Repeat blob passage. This happened in total 3 times with heavy flow passing through within 2 hours.

After that I just felt numb and tired, went to drink lots of water. Haven't had an appetite since I was pregnant and still don't have any appetite.

It's now 3 days later, the cramps stopped previously but Day 3, they're back.

Today is Friday. Day 10 scan is next Friday and I'm looking forward to finding out this nightmare is over.

I'm sorry this post isn't positive and hopeful but it's realistic and it's raw emotion and probably how many people feel at this point and it's okay to feel this way. Its okay to be angry and upset and stay up all night crying whilst the hormones are still clearing and I deal with what feels like devastating grief even and work through to acceptance. I'll pop back and share when I feel much better.

Your situation sounds very similar to mine.  I never saw clear evidence but passed some very large clots.  My cramps have been unbearable and no amount of medication helps at times.  It feels like I'm being stabbed

Tlr1987 - October 17

Cytotec experience.  IVF/FET transfer.  Tramsferred 1 embryo.  BFP 5dp5dt. 6 weeks normal sac.  7 weeks slow increasing hcg levels compared to week 6 but normal heartbeat.  8 weeks no heartbeat - diagnosis missed miscarriage.   Had 3 options natural miscarriage, cytotec or D&C.  Chose cytotec.  Took 4 (200 mg) vaginally at 12:30 pm. At 5:30 pm cramps and ab pain started.  By 7 pm everything seemed to have stopped.  Still no bleeding yet.  Took 2nd dose at 8:30 pm 4 (200 mg) vaginally.  Went to bed at 10 pm.  Woke up at 1:30 am to cramping. Severe chills but sweating.  Didn't want to move was too cold.  Forced myself to go sit on the toilet. Dime sized amount of blood in pad.  Peed in toilet first signs of the start of blood.  Went back to bed.  Woke up at 3:30 to intense contractions about 30 seconds to a minute apart.  Most contractions were a pain level of 5 out of 10.  Held my crotch area to release the flow at the toilet rather than it coming out walking from bed.  As soon as I let go blood poored before I could even sit on the toilet all over.  Soon as I sat down a giant clot the size of my hand fell into the toilet.  Felt the urge to push and another clot the size of my hand came out. Both felt like clots it never felt like a "ball" as I read the sac would feel.  I was desperate to retrieve the baby and bury it for closure.  I didn't want to dig through the toilet it was pure red and I was sure it looked and felt only like clots. Decided to flush it.  Went back to bed. Woke up an hour later at 4:30 am to more contractions now at a pain level of 6 so I was sure it hadn't passed yet since the contractions continued.  Woke up at 8:30 am to no cramps, nothing but light/medium flow.  I assumed the sac never came out and it did not work.  Day continued nothing happened.  Called office and asked if its common to take more than 24 hours for the sac to come out or if it would have within the 24 hrs because I felt like it hadn't come out.  They would not answer the question and told me there is no way of knowing without an ultrasound.  Went in for ultrasound next day at 6 am.  Medium/heavy blood flow.  Had vaginal ultrasound. Doctor said I passed it but the placenta was still in and will come out still.  Left devastated that I flushed it and didn't get my closure.  Planned to go home and try another dose if it had not passed.  Since they said it had I drove to work in tears, just as I was slightly feeling better I felt worse than ever that I had flushed it.  At 11:30 am got cramps.  Went to breakroom took 3 ibuprofens. Contractions started within 15 min. Went on toilet. Felt urge to push and the placenta came out and attached was the sac.  It hit the toilet with a splash. I grabbed it out and it feels like a rubber ball with the placenta still attached. I wrapped it in toilet paper and it now is in my lunchbox.  I am so upset with myself that I didn't stay home a few more days and have the privacy of my own home.  I now can bury it and have some closure.  Give the medication up to 6 days to complete its task.  Mine took just under 48 hours.

mariaj - June 22

I had a missed misscarriage on my very 1st pg and I found out about it today after my ultra sound on 13 weeks pregnancy. they couldnt find my baby's heart beat today and the baby was measured at 10 weeks. I rushed to my obgyn after the tech told me about not seeing any heart beats. My OB she came in to the office without showing any sympathy then expained to me and my hubby that can happen to any 1 out of 4 women and how the tech made her job easier by telling me the issue about the baby and the high odd of misscarriage is the reason she doesnt like to see any pg women before 12 weeks! Then she sent me home with a presc of 8 misoprostrol 200 pills and told me to use 4 all in once v___ly. that was it. All that it took to shatter my dreams hopes and soul.  I was so sad and angry that decided to take the pills as soons as i get home since I didnt see any support or sympathy from my DR during this or through my pg. and I knew I am alone in this. It was at 4.30pm when I used the 4 pills v____ly.. then I googled about others experiences with the pill. It was then when I paniced bc I found out it can be very painfull and found out the OBGY didnt give me any pain killers with the pills. I asked my hubby to go and buy some over the counter ones for me. I took 2 ibubro 400 and lay down on bed till 8.30pm while crying my eyes out while watching videos of pg women who went through this. So sad that there were many. I had no pain till 8.30pm. After 4 hours of taking the pills, i started having cramps. Just a little harsher than menstural ones for 45 mins. but There was no break unlike period cramps. I figured out that it was due to my cervix opening and told myself it is working. The pain started to go then I went to pee and saw I am passing a big clot and it was the sac. the first thing that came out. So I knew I did it. processed completed. I got reliefed. I thought I could face problems like faiting by doing it alone at home having no medical support. I thought I would pass more blood before passing the sac. Now it is 12am and I had passed a little clots. A little worried that I am not passing a lot of blood. but I am sure it is completed. So far it was easy for me when I compare it to what I have read online about other women's experinces. I am emotionally in a bad situation though. I hope this never happens to anybody. Best of lock to all women around the world. I live in Canada and this experince opened my eyes that doctors here suck. They dont care about patients going through this and I now know the odds are safly very high.

Took the pills under the tongue and inside the cervix. Pain, cramping, shivers, then bleeding started. 2 Days in, something hard fell out and i was tempted to pop it but chose not to. It is now about 10 days and i have clots still coming out and bleeding (it varies from heavy to light). I have not been able to talk to anyone about it, not even my supposed baby's father. actually, most of the time i tried talking to him about it, he blamed me for not taking contraceptives of emergency pills and wanted to know if I was with someone else other than him. It is probably for the best that he is in another country for work for another 2 months. Talking to him is going to make me even sadder. I hate this feeling, at some point I usually switch off my emotions and just float through life.... forgive my rant.

jeenyonline - August 29

I was 8 weeks pregnant, as I and my husband were not ready to take up the responsibility we decided to end the pregnancy with misoprostol abortion pill from an online medical store. I had some pain and cramps, with heavy bleeding can recommend to visit them #onlineabortionpillrx

Ladies a little help here. I am not sure if I passed out all the tissue

So yesterday at 5weeks I took the  misoprostol pills that I put under my tongue and inserted vaginally. I took them at 13:30pm, was supposed to give them 6hours to work. 30 minutes later I started getting mild cramps. I kept drinking hot water as I was discouraged to take any pain meds. Around 15:30pm I got up to pee and it was bloody with some shreds of clots. At 17:00 I started to bleed and pass more clots. Cramping became more intense, I was pooping a lot and passing clots as well as vomiting. After 18:00 the biggest clot fell which was about the size of a flat egg. However I didn't see the sac (probably fell off while I was pooping) Around 20:00 bleeding reduced and cramping was mild. I managed to fall asleep and woke up at midnight, surprisingly there was no cramping and I was barely bleeding. Its 21:40 today and bleeding was just a few drops that barely filled a maxi pad.

Is this it? Is everything out? I expected a continuous period like bleeding for like a week. I still get mild cramps and very small bits of blood when I pee. My nurse had given me a cleansing pill to take on Monday but after hearing about the little bleeding she says to hold off on it till Friday to see if anything changes. Am afraid I might need to trake a second dosage. Please help
