I went in for my first prenatal visit at 9 weeks and found that the baby had no heartbeat and had stopped growing at 7 weeks. I spoke with my OBGYN after a 2nd ultrasound to confirm and she let me know about my 3 options: 1) D&C, 2) Misoprostol, 3) wait & see. I ended up taking the Misoprostol two days later. I was terrified to take the medicine after reading so many terrible experiences people have had. However, it seemed like the best option for me. My experience is outlined below, I hope this helps people feel better about taking it, it definitely worked out well for me and I recommend it for someone who has a miscarriage at around 7-8 weeks. I spent the whole day on the couch with 2 heating pads, one on my back and one on my stomach. I started off drinking gatorade, I wouldn't recommend this, I think it made my nausea worse, just stick to water. I was able to eat some crackers, bread, cereal and soup throughout the day, and drank a lot of ginger ale. Timeline: - Took advil at 10am - Inserted 8 pills v____ally at 11am - Experienced mild cramping for 2-3 hours - Had diarrhea and started bleeding at around 3pm - Took another advil at 3:30pm - Threw up, had diarrhea, and significant bleeding at 4:30pm - Bleeding when I went to the bathroom (peed) at 6pm - Pa__sed 2 good sized blood clots & a grey/whitish tissue clot + diarrhea at 8pm - Cramps subsided by midnight It was physically tiring, but I was able to go to work the next day and only experienced some mild cramping during the day. I continued to bleed for about 10 days after taking the misoprostol. Like a heavy regular period for 1 week and then increasingly lighter after that. I took an advil each day, but the pain was minimal. I got my next menstrual period almost exactly 4 weeks later and it was normal.

I am also so glad I found these posts. I went in for my 8 week check up to find there was no baby in my sac 3 different people looked it was a long day. The doctor seemed to think it would pa__s on it's own but it hasn't and I have had no bleeding or cramping. But I have been extemely nauseous and fatigued. So I have decided to take the cytotec later today when I get off work. I am just ready to feel not pregnant espcially since there is no baby. I am glad I read these posts because orginally I didn't have pain meds prescribed but I got a doctor to write me a script so I feel comforted knowing I have those if the pain is unbearable. I was wondering if anyone else had bad pregnancy symptoms with a blighted ovum fatigue, nausea, and vommiting. I will update in a couple of days to let you know how it went.

I'm am very thankful for this forum after losing our pregnancy last week, helped the process feel less lonely. Here was my experience: We found out early that I was pregnant. We were a little concerned because I was spotting and I was cramping quite a bit. We got the 48 b-hcg labs and progesterone done which both looks great at 5 weeks. We felt better about the pregnancy. We were so excited about our 8 week ultrasound to see the baby and the heartbeat. My husband is an ob-gyn and both he and the US tech were a bit quiet during the US. We saw the gestional sac, but it looked empty and I could tell that there was hemorrhage near the sac. We discussed it with my OB. We decided to wait another week as my dating could have been off. That first week was horrible. We went in for our repeat US it was obvious that the pregnancy stalled out at 5.5 weeks. There was no heartbeat, a significant amount of hemorrage around the sac. This was our first pregnancy and I definitely did not want to get a D&C unless I needed to. We decided to go through the Misoprostol route. This was my experience with the Misoprostol: Monday: -5:00pm 800mcq of Misoprostol was placed by my OB in the US, she used some wet guaze as well to wettened the tablets to help them dissolve. -6:00pm At home, I immediately starting to have cramps, horrible chills, and explosive diarrhea for the next hour. -7:30pm The chills stop, and I start to have a low grade fever, and the cramping continues as well as the diarrhea. -9:30pm The bleeding starts, about the amount of a normal menstrual cycle. -I continue to have cramping and light bleeding, and some nauseau until 4:00am. Then everything stops. Tuesday: The next morning, I literally feel like a new person and think that the miscarriage is complete. My ob calls and is concerned that there was not much bleeding. I get a repeat US that day and we are devastated again as the sac is still there. My ob (who is wonderful by the way) places another 800mcq of Misoprostol around 2:30pm. I go home and NOTHING happens. We were confused since the first dose took quite a toll on me. Around 9:00pm, I feel something roll out of me in the toilet. We think it's the baby, but then on closer inspection, it was one of the Misoprostol tablets! My ob calls in another dose of Miso, which I attempted to place myself that night. It was really difficult and I'm pretty sure most of it did not make it to my cervix. Nothing happens that night. Thursday: I go in to see my OB again and she placed a third and final dose of Misoprostol around 9:00am. -some moderate cramping starts -10:00 am, I go to the bathroom, and I feel a large tissue roll out of me with some bleeding and clots. I completely freak out. My mother was with me that day since my husband had to go back to work. My mother fishes out the tissue. It looks like 1/2 of a placenta. She wraps it up for me. -I have very minor bleeding and cramping for the next few hours -12:30 pm, I go to the bathroom, and another large tissue rolls out of me. My mother fishes it out, and it looks like another 1/2 of the placenta and the gestional sac looks attached to it. -afterwards I have some mild bleeding and cramping and I feel much better. -we will get an US next week to make sure I'm complete, but I'm pretty sure I am. My overall experience with the misoprostol was good. -The first day, the side effects of chills, diarrhea, fever, nausea, was probably the most severe and worse then the cramping. -The cramping was never ever that bad for me, but I usually have severe menstrual cramps. I never required any pain medications, not even ibuprofen or Tylenol. I did have lortab ready in case I needed it though. -I never bled that much. I think that the gestional sac was already detached and that is why. -It took 3 doses of Miso for the miscarriage to complete for me. -I would not do this alone. It is very emotional each time you think you have pa__sed the baby. And even more so when you actual do. I was so glad to have my mother there to help take out the products of conception and wrap it up for me. -We haven't decided what to do with the products of conception. They seem to precious to me to just flush down the toilet at this time. I think we will put them in a nice box and bury them. -The best was finally having closure.

I was supposed to be around eight weeks. Come to find out the baby never developed. I was given the options of d&C, naturally, and using the pills. I waited about a month to see if my body would recognize it, but nothing ever happened. Last night I took the four pills v____ally around 830, the dr told me to insert a tampon to hold the pills in. Around 1230 I woke up literally leaked blood past my tampon. Sorry for the tmi. so I cleaned up put in another tampon and went back to sleep. an hour later it was running down my leg again. I had very light cramps but they kept getting stronger, i thought I was going to bleed to death. I tried one more tampon, went to lay down and not even five minutes later, it was pouring out again. I finally went to the store to get some pads, very thick pads! I recommend stocking up on them if you are bleeding a lot!! I have never seen so much blood!! This morning around 11 I pa__sed something that looked to be the size of my pinky, and it was gray. I have never seen anything like it. I called the dr and he said he seemed to think it pa__sed. Other than bleeding as much as i did, it wasn't bad. I hope to stop bleeding and get my first period again so we can ttc again!! Sorry for the trouble everyone is going through. It's not easy, but we can do it!

Earlier this week I learned I had blighted ovum. Should have been 7 weeks, measured 5 and no heartbeat. The doctor recommended Misoprostol since I am afraid of needles and surgery (I have somehow managed to have two children, one natural and the other c-section, but this is still a fear I have). The Dr gave me script for Vicodin which made me second guess my decision, but it was still better than surgery. Here's my experience: Morning: Drank 80 oz water. Ate some crackers and a breakfast bar. Afternoon: Ate half a turkey sub on plain white roll, literally turkey and bread. I had read somewhere not to eat anything greasy to help with nausea. 3:00 Started bleeding on my own. Called Dr. he advised to take Cytotec anyway to help speed the process and increase chances of all tissue being expelled. 3:30 Took 1 vicodin. Was already cramping 4:30pm Took 4 Cytotec orally, let them disolve in mouth, between cheek and gum. 5:00pm Could tell cramps were getting more intense but it was more uncomfortable than painful. 5:30pm pa__sed the pregnacy 5:40pm Had an episode while using the bathroom. Intense hot flash left me dizzy sweating and incredibly nauseas. Thought I might pa__s out. Rested my head in my hands and breathed deep for two or three minutes. The flash pa__sed and I felt exhausted but I didn't hurt and I never vomited. I think the key is to stay calm and don't panic. 6:00pm laid in bed with heating pad and drank some powerade. cramping was dull throbbing and left abdomen tight. drank some chicken broth. 6:30 drank more chicken broth with noodles. 7:00pm checked bleeding, it was similar to a heavy period. clots but mostly uterine tissue. 7:30pm took two extra strength tylenol. went to bed. Worst side effect I had: diarrhea and the feeling of being incredibly thirsty. it was hard to drink anything other than water because it came right out. I think my cramping was not as intense because I was properly hydrated beforehand. Woke up the next morning and felt fine, like I was on day two or three of a heavy period with no cramping. Flow is medium, I never soaked a pad the entire time. Had three big expulsions and the rest is normal like a period. I would do this again before I ever tried a D&C. It was nice to be home with loved ones for support and to be able to go through the emotions. I feel like I can move on now. Why I think my experience was mild: 1. Drink lots of water 2. Don't eat anything greasy or spicy. Definitely EAT something, do not take pills on empty stomach. 3. Don't be anxious. Prepare and relax. 4. Have support. I wouldn't recommend this alone. 5. Heating pad was great for relieving the uncomfortable cramping.

Like many others, I am writing my experience because I found this site to be incredibly helpful. My experience is a bit different, but admittedly I have not read all 14 pages. I will begin by saying, this is my first m/c, but 2nd pregnancy. I gave birth to my son 3.5 years ago naturally - I write that because I found myself constantly comparing this drug-induced experience with giving birth. In retrospect, taking misoprostol was something in between menstruating and giving birth. I should also note, I had a small baby bump, so that I could not b___ton my pants - a constant reminder that I _was_ pregnant. At my first appt at 9 weeks, the OB told me that it measured 5.5 weeks and my hCG level was 44000(!). I decided to wait until my husband came back to town before taking misoprostol, because taking care of our son by myself, working full-time AND being laid up in bed for a whole day was not something I could handle. At 10.5 weeks (yesterday), I took 4 pills orally (800 mcg?). Here's how it went: 2:15pm (after lunch): take 4 pills. Was prepared to stay in bed all day. 2:25pm (!): slight cramping began. constant but slight. took 2 OTC advil (ibuprofen) 3:45pm: brown spotting. Around then, I found this site, but read only the 1st page. Walked around because somebody recommended it. Did the dishes. Then, went back to bed. 5pm: major cramps. like extremely bad menstrual cramps. constant, so it was not like labor. thank goodness for my heating pad and netflix. 5:30pm: clots (half-dollar size & quarter size). 6pm: more clots, like earlier. 6:30pm: 2 more advil. smaller clots. at some point, more smaller clots. 8:15pm: cramps became intermittent, much like the beginnings of labor. maybe 5 min apart. bleeding was very slight. I was thinking the worst was over because I'd read this drug take 6 hours to peak. Also, reading some of the posts convinced me that all my clots were out. but i was wrong. anyway, my stomach began rumbling a lot and there was some gas, but that's it. i had eaten dinner a little earlier. ~11pm: I fell asleep with consistently intermittent cramps. But I fell asleep easily with a heating pad pressed to my abdomen. 1am: I woke up with a pad soaked in blood and released med clot (half-dollar sized) into the toilet (sorry for the details). 1-3am: woke up every 30 min to change my soaked pad. released a med size clot each time. 4am: woke up to change a soaked pad. can't remember if there was another clot 5am: woke up to change a soaked pad. definitely released a clot -- the largest one yet, small egg size. still cramping intermittently, like the beginnings of labor. 6am: bleeding became very menstruation-like. did not need to change pad. 9am: woke up feeling relatively normal, yet slightly fatigued ... like I'd had the flu. diarrhea. It's now 1pm. My baby belly is definitely gone (sad, but relieved to not have the constant reminder). I've had ever-so-slight cramps (took 1 advil here and there). I can tell I still have some hormones in my system, but I'm relieved it's over. Of course, I will need to get another u/s to ensure all the tissue is out. If I had to do it again, I don't know if I would take the pills in the middle of the day. I didn't realize it would take 12-16 hours to complete everything, until I read these posts. On the other hand, maybe it was good to sleep thru many of the intermittent contractions, which was clearly my uterus preparing itself, like with childbirth. BTW, i had done hypbirth with my son. I wish I had done hypbirth after taking misoprostol. Regardless, I highly recommend a heating pad. I set it warmer than I usually do -- very helpful. Thank you for providing this forum. It's a wonderful, helpful, rea__suring resource. Good luck to anybody reading this. It's not pleasant, but you can do it.

It's not easy, but you can do it.

Hi....I was 7 weeks pregnant and started miscarrying but it failed to complete naturally...now my doctor has prescribed 200 mcg misoprostol to be taken orally 1 pill, 3 times a day for seven days. I am confused as most posts I read say they are taken either v____ally or three or four in one dose. Has anyone else been prescribed what seems to be such a minimal amount and for so long?
