I wanted to relate my experience since I read so many others and to rea__sure women that your experience does not need to be horrible. Mine was not.
First. Clarify with your doctor the dosage. The nurse just told me to "Take the medicine" and then the pills at the pharmacy had instructions to take one every four hours. I thought that was odd, really odd, but I went with it. Predictably, after three doses, nothing happened.
I called my doc in the morning and she said to refill the prescription and take the full dose at once. I did that, taking them "bucally" (I hate that word). Basically you hold them in your cheek for a half hour and then chew and swallow. 24 hours later still nothing! Yes I was frustrated and emotionally exhausted. We canceled all our plans. We hunkered down at home. I was preparing for some blood avalanche.
So 24 hours later, I took another full dose but decided to take them v____ally. Since I regularly check my cervix, this didn't bother me. I pushed them up all the way. Then I laid on my couch for about three hours. Still NOTHING! That was frustrating as all hell. I remembered reading how some of these ladies used exercise to speed things along. I raked in the yard with my husband for a few hours and then we went on a long hour walk. When I returned and I went to the bathroom I had my first clotting, gushing blood.
I should clarify that I was about 6 weeks along and I had had a blighted ovum.
That's really the extent of my story. I had some cramps and I took ibuprofen but nothing that severe but I also think I have a decent pain tolerance. There were some globby clusters that came out and it was *weird* but not grotesque. I didn't cry or freak out. I never lost so much blood that I was losing consciousness. I could totally go about my daily business.
I bled between heavy, medium, and light for 8 days. I then spotted for about 10 more.
I don't want to diminish any else's more horrific experience. We all process this stuff in different ways. Our bodies go through their own weird things. I just wanted to tell my story for the people who are freaking out. My doctor a__sured me it would be like a heavy period and she was right. So if your doctor tells you that, maybe just trust them.
It's now been about a month since my experience. I am thrilled I could avoid the D&C. I am glad I did not wait it out naturally. That weekend of taking the pills was a bit of a mind f*ck with the ups and down and frustrations and bad dosage and taking the pills different ways. But I got beyond it. You will too.
I hope whoever reads this that you remember to be kind to yourself. That you remember you did nothing wrong. You are also not alone. I'd hug you if you could. Good luck on your journey.

Im 21 years old, my first pregnancy ended in miscarriage this past Wednesday May 22, 2013. Here's my story. Had an appointment with nutritionist at 10 and had made another with my OB for a strep throat test. All came back negtive! Was prescribed antibiotics but hadnt picked up the prescription yet. While home waiting for it to be filled, me and my husband had s_x. When we finished, he stood up and said "uh oh, baby you're bleeding." Since during my first US at 7 w 1 d the OB said that I had a blood clot that was waiting to pa__s, I thought nothing of it until I noticed that it was BRIGHT RED. I told myself something wasnt right. Immediately I called my OB amd she told me to put on a pad and wait about an hour. Waited an hour and a half and the bleeding continued. I called again amd they called me in for a US. They tried to see the problem with the doppler but since my uterus tilts back they had to do v____al. I was, according to my due date, 9w and 1d. I watched the moniter while she wiggled the wand inside of me and I knew right away there was no heartbeart. Seconds after I didnt see it she told me that she couldnt find it and that my baby was only measuring in at 7w and 3d. Meaning the baby died 2 DAYS after my first US! The doctor came and gave me the 3 options: naturally, with Cytotec, or DNC. I chose the meds for a speedy process and recovery. Little did I know that I would go through pretty much full b__wn LABOR! Of course I was emotional havkng just learned we lost a child, the OB inserted 2 pills v____ally and called in the rest and the pain meds. Not even 10 minutes after I left the office the contractions or cramps began. Filled my prescription and took a pain pill immediately. Needless tk say, it didnt help! The only place I felt comfortable and could keep the cramps to a minimum hurt level was by sitting on the toilet, no joke! I kept bleeding and pa__sinf small clots until finally a rather large, thick and purple clot started to come out. I wiped it with tp and stuck it in a ziplock. I know that was the fetus and I plan on burying it. The cramps subsided tremendously and I was able to go to sleep. It is saturday and I am still cramping mildly and pa__sing small clots that smell like death! Literally! But apparently it is just what was left of the placenta and amniotic sac and uterine lining. I will be glad when it is all over. I do want to apologize to anyone who is or has gone through this. It ks horrifying, painful, and completely unforgetable. But god knew something the doctor didnt and we just have to play the cards we are dealt. Good luck to thewomen who are trying again and I wish you the world!

Hi, I was to be a young mum and I was really excited. I was at work and I had brown spotting so I went to emergency ( earlier that week I had a Doppler heart beat reading and the baby's heart beat was not able to be found, which was said to be normal for a 12 week pregnancy ). The doctors at the emergency room couldn't tell me If I had miscarried or not so I went home. The next week was my first ultrasound, the baby was not detected and there was no heartbeat, I left not knowing what was going on. Later I had called my midwife and was told over the phone that I had miscarried. I was 13 weeks along in what I knew but my baby had stopped developing at 3 weeks. It was hard for me to accept my miscarriage when for so long I had believed that I was to be a mum. I had gone for my follow up ultrasound today to make sure everything in my uterus was gone but I have had no bleeding. The results show that mother nature has not done its job and my uterus is still full of stuff. I was given the option of D&C or misoprostol, for me I chose the pills because I don't want to have to wait forever to have surgery ( I live in Canada and our hospital waitlists are long I could have waited weeks to months). I m extremely nervous to take these pills, I have abnormally low blood pressure and I m worried how that will effect me when I begin bleeding. Also my prescription is orally 3 pills every 8 hours for 3 days and I work all the time Im so worried of how I am going to be able to do this. I plan on beginning tomorrow. I'm beginning to think I should just wait and do the D&C.

I also wanted to share my experience with misoprostol, especially because it was as good as can be expected in such a situation. I was terrified before I took it and I found this website very helpful with what to expect. This was my fourth pregnancy. My first pregnancy was successful, but since then I have had 3 miscarriages over the course of a year. My first two miscarriages were natural and ended around 6 weeks, but with this last one I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum so it was an entirely different experience. When I went in for my dating ultrasound at what should have been 7 weeks, the radiologist told me that I was only measuring 5.5 weeks. Since I was positive of my dates, I knew at that moment that I would have yet another unsuccessful pregnancy. I had a few more ultrasounds and more blood work done over the next 3 weeks and it was finally confirmed that it was a blighted ovum when my HCG levels were at 34000 and there was only an empty sac measuring 6 weeks when I should have been 10 weeks. I knew I didn't want a D&C based on the a__sociated risks and I was also scared since it seemed like much more of an ordeal having to go into an OR. So I decided to wait a few weeks and see if I would miscarry naturally and if not, then I would take the pill. Well, nothing happened during those weeks so I went to the pregnancy loss clinic where they gave me the medication and very thorough instructions on what to do. As instructed I took 4 pills v____ally at 6:00 PM on a Thursday night and layed down for 1 hour to ensure the pills were absorbed properly. By 8:00 PM, I was beginning to feel some cramping so I took 2 Tylenol 3, again as instructed by the clinic. The cramping got worse even with the Tylenol 3, but it was not unbearable. I continued to lay down with a heating pad and was definitely uncomfortable, but I was not writhing in pain. I would say it was more like strong menstrual cramps. I can imagine it would have been a lot worse if I had not taken the T3's. By 9:00 the bleeding had started and at 11:00, I began to pa__s tissue. At 11:30, I pa__sed the sac and after that point, the cramps became much milder and I only had light bleeding. I took two more doses of T3's through the night and by morning my cramps had disappeared. I had light bleeding until Wednesday and then it was over. Based on my experience, I couldn't have imagined a better outcome for such a horrible thing to go through. Everything happened very quickly, with what I would consider minimal pain, there was no heavy bleeding at all, and I had no stomach upset or nausea. If God forbid I have to go through this again, I would not hesitate to take the misoprostol. I wish that other women who are in this painful situation would have an experience similar to mine.

Hello all. I'm sorry for anyone reading this but I felt as though reading other womens experiences with Cytotec helped me, so I would like to share my story.
I went for my 8 week ultrasound and the fetal heart rate was low and measured about 5 weeks and 2 days. I went back for a repeat ultrasound 1 week later and there was no heartbeat. I have a 1 year old and was not trying but it was a happy surprise when we found out I was pregnant and we were disappointed about the bad news. I opted to give my body time to miscarry on it's own. After waiting 2 weeks, I decided to try Cytotec. I couldn't take the feeling of being pregnant and knowing that I really wasn't. I still had morning sickness and all the symptoms that come with pregnancy. I wanted to avoid general anesthesia and hospitals so I figured medication was worth a try.
I took 1 percocet and 3 Advil at 4 pm (just in case)on Fri and had a heating pad ready.
I inserted 4, 200 mcg pills v____ally at 5 pm on Friday and 30 min later cramps started. They were not severe (could be the painkillers kicking in) and started bleeding 2 hours later. The bleeding was similar to the first day of my period. Heavy, but not scary.
I inserted the same dose at 9 pm and still had the same bleeding and cramps. I took another percocet at 10:30 since my cramps were getting much stronger and fell asleep around 12 with the heating pad. I found that the heating pad made me feel better.
I woke up around 6 am and had some cramps and the bleeding was about the same. I didn't take any painkillers since my cramps were not so bad. I never pa__sed clots, or any tissue overnight so I called my doc and asked if i should take another dose. I had read about women pa__sing the sac and was worried that if I didn't a D/C would be inevitable.
The Doc said I could take another round, so I took 3 more doses on Sat, approximately 4 hours apart. I only took Percocet about an hour before I took the first dose. The cramps weren't bad (could have been the percocet)and I bled about the same but pa__sed a few clots this time. They weren't big at all.
On Sun, I felt fine and was able to watch my daughter, clean and catch up on errands. I was bleeding but not heavy at all.
On Mon, I returned to work and was bleeding but didn't have any cramps during the day. I went to the bathroom at work and pa__sed something large but I wasn't sure what it was. I din't have cramps, just felt pressure. Mon night, I started having contractions and had to take percocet. They felt like the labor pains I had when I first started labor with my daughter....very strong and painful. I started bleeding heavier. I finally fell asleep that night and woke up on Tues morning feeling ok. I went to work and later in the afternoon felt really wet and thought I needed to change my pad....went to the bathroom and there was something large on it. It looked like tissue but I wasn't sure. On Wed, I had no cramps and light bleeding.
Finally, on Thurs (today), I went for an ultrasound. Doc said I don't need a D/C since the sac was gone and the only thing she wanted to follow up on was the thickness of my uterine lining. I have an appointment next Fri for another ultrasound. She said if it is thinner, then there are no worries. I am still bleeding and she says that is good...hopefully it is thinner by next week.
I started feeling back to myself about 5 days after I took the first dose. It wasn't as painful as I expected and would do it again if it prevents me from having a D/C.
My Doc didn't give me anything for pain. She just said to take Ibuprofen. If I had not taken Percocet, the pain could have been worse. I recommend taking a painkiller, just in case, having someone with you, and a heating pad.
You will get through it. Good luck to everyone and I hope whatever choice you make works out for you.

Here is my recent first time experience with a prescription called MISOPRSTOL. This was prescribed to me after talking to my doctors nurse over the phone for a report of my first ultrasound which showed no sign of a baby or sac. The ultrasound only showed my fibroid tumors unfortunately and the ultrasound was extremely uncomfortable. I was lightly spotting before the ultrasound and from the home pregnancy test and calculating my last period, I was about two months pregnant. The ultrasound was done first v____ally and it caused my bleeding to increase and I later that day had to wear a pad. Two days later the bleeding just got worse with me practically on bed rest. So I thought that if it wasn't for that v____al ultrasound, then maybe I wouldn't be in this predicament. Midweek my symptoms of a miscarriage where more evident. This totals to my fourth miscarriage. My apt was on that Monday and the nurse called me that Wednesday afternoon to give me the results of my blood work. The blood work was normal but I shared with the nurse that I was in a position of loosing the baby. No apt was set and the nurse immediately called in a prescription of MISOPROSTOL & pain meds. She informed me that the pill will cause me to go through some cramps and speed up the process of the miscarriage. I was totally hesitant to have a drug cause me to cramp and contract because I was already physically exhausted. I took the MISOPROSTOL that Saturday morning which has been about a week ago. Those pills are the DEVIL!!!!!!!!! Never in my life have I been in so much pain! Those pills had me on my knees screaming, falling out, and delirious because of the extreme contractions. I bleed slowly and didn't have anything pa__s but small tissue. It wasn't til that Sunday evening for me to finally pa__s something worth looking at. I had the worst pain in my legs, my back, my stomach, and my pelvis. My muscles in my rear had muscle spasms and I couldn't pa__s any stool whatsoever due to the muscle cramping. My pains and discomfort where unreal and I didn't get much rest at all. The pains where always there and at times worse then other times. My first huge clot was relieving and I thought I was good and on the path to feeling better.....NOT! Later that week I had yet the bleeding, no sleep, no appet_te, and unbearable pains that I tried my best to deal with. I wanted my body to have the chance to go through the rejection of the pregnancy the most natural way possible after taking those pills. As to date, I am yet in discomfort but the pain pills help me go to sleep. My plan is to go back to the doctor asap. I had to cancel the previous appointments because I was in too much pain. It seems that everything pa__sed and boy was it crucial!!!!! I would advice anyone to first check with your doctor to be sure you are miscarrying and then do your research on MISOPROSTOL before taking it because its just an added discomfort to ones loss and miscarriage drama!

Thanks all for sharing your stories… It helped me a lot to prepare myself to face my missed miscarriage and also it provided me guidance when I was confused during the process with misoprostol. I just wanted to give back by telling my story hoping that it could be helpful for someone. I am sorry for your loss and that you have to pa__s through this. I share your pain, physical and emotional.
In my case, we discovered by the end of 12 weeks of pregnancy during our first ultrasound that the baby stopped to develop at 6 weeks and half. It was a shock, we were confused and numb, and deeply sad. During all these weeks I thought that I having a healthy pregnancy, I had all the symptoms… my belly was getting bigger, I gained weight etc., but it was only due to the HCG hormones... The doctor confirmed that it was a missed m/c and since the m/c didn’t happen naturally, I had 2 options left : d&c and misoprostol (cytotec). Since I had d&cs many years ago, I did not want take the risks a__sociated with d&cs including uterine scarring – Asherman syndrome, thinning of the endometrium, risk of weakened or incompetent cervix. The other doctors I met before told me that it is a safe medical procedure with less than 1% of risk, but now I am skeptical about this statement after having done some researches on my side. If you opt for a d&c, be sure to choose a clinic or a doctor with extensive experience with this procedure and ask if the surgery is done with the guidance of ultrasound... it helps to minimize the risks. The good thing with d&c, it is a quick procedure under anesthesia (procedure itself is about 20 min and they keep you under observation for about an hour after surgery) and you don’t see anything...
At 13 weeks and 2 days (baby was dead 7 weeks ago), I was prescribed 2 doses of 800 mg to be inserted v____ally (8 tablets of 200 mg) and statex (morphine) for pain relief if it is too intense. The second dose of misoprostol was prescribed by precaution and to be used after 24h if the first dose was unsuccessful. I started the process the same day.
1st day
2:30 pm: Insert v____ally the first dose of 4 pills (I used water based lubricant on the pills and on my finger to help to glide more easily). I lied on my bed and rested for 3 hours – I wanted to make sure that the pills stay in place.
3:30 pm: Cramps start
5:00 pm: Medium to strong cramps.
5:20 pm: Cramps were getting stronger. Took 500mg Tylenol.
5:30 – 7:30pm: Intense cramps, severe chills and I am completely wet because of cold sweat. The pain gets more and more intense. I had a little bit of dirrhea and I vomited a little too. The pain became extreme, I was rolling on the bed, screaming and crying, I almost fainted. We had the confirmation from the pharmacist that I can take 2,5 mg of statex with my Tylenol I took previously.
7:30pm – 1:30 am: With the statex taking effect, the pain is more manageable. I take one more dose of statex at 11:00pm. I change pads 5 times only for hygienic reasons because they were not full. The bleeding is light, red with some clogs. I go to sleep discouraged thinking that it didn’t work, but still hoping that the bleeding kicks up during the night.
2nd day
When I wake up, there is only light bleeding on my pad with small clogs. I am really discouraged and worried that the first dose did not work. By noon, the bleeding stopped. After reading many misoprostol experiences on Internet, I decided to take the second dose. Even though I bled a little and some clogs came out, I knew it was not enough.
1:00pm: Insert v____ally the second dose of 4 pills. This time I had more difficulty to push the pill in the v____a. I go to bed to rest.
4:00pm: I am worried because I felt only few minimal cramps. So I verify what happened with the pills and realized that they slid down in the v____a. I panic a little because I did not know what to do and try to push back the pills in the v____a as deeply as I can. It was difficult because the pills started to melt. Afterwards, I read on Internet that the pills do not work if they stay at the entrance of the v____a, they have to be put as deep as possible – in the back near the cervix where the uterus starts. I go back to the bed.
After inserting the pills the first and the second time, I have fever up to 2 degree Celsius above my normal body temperature and some chills.
5:00 – 6:00pm: I have little bleeding with little clogs. I am worried because I do not have any cramps, and terrified that the pills did not work…
6:00 – 7:00pm: Cramps starts and gets stronger. I take 500mg of Tylenol at 7:00pm. I feel that when I move and walk, I feel more contractions so I move around. I go up and downs stairs and did some cleaning in the house.
7:00 – 8:00pm: Cramps is very strong. I pushed some clogs in the toilet. Light bleeding.
8:45pm: I feel a warm liquid falling. I think the water broke. My pad is full of pinkish warm liquid with residues of the pills.
8:45 – 11:00pm: Took statex at 8:45. Extreme pain (different from the day before) from intense cramps/contractions. Even with statex, I scream and cry of pain. I think I was literally in labor… I try to walk around in the house or walk in place to provoke more contractions, and I try to stay up hoping that the gravity will help. I have medium bleeding. I push tissue and clogs in the toilet three times. I have again some diarrhea and vomit a little. I am exhausted and lie on the bed for 10 min. I go to the bathroom to change the pad, when I stand up I feel something bigger coming out (it is not painful at all, just strange…). I look and on the pad there is the sac… size of a big egg! I pushed again some tissue in the toilet… I was relieved…
11:00pm – next day: Medium bleeding & light cramps. I feel weak but I will rest.
I really hope that this is over, as I want to avoid d&c. I have an appointment with my doctor next Tuesday to verify if everything had pa__sed... I am praying for good news...

If you opt for a d&c, be sure to choose a clinic or a doctor with extensive experience with this procedure and ask them if the surgery is done with a ultrasound it helps to minimize the risks.
I have an appointment with my doctor next Tuesday... I am praying for good news and I can finally move on...
