I, too, would like to add my experience with misoprostol, to help anyone else who might have been in a similar situation as me. I found it to work very well, and would use it again, if the same situation were to arise. I have been researching Cytotec, and it's FDA approval is for gastric ulcers. The prostaglandin use/induction of cramping and bleeding is a side use., or "off-label use" as the website says. I wonder if it's more effective if inserted, rather than taken orally? Inserted it places the medication right at the site where things need to happen. But, not being a doctor, I don't know. I just wonder.
Here is our story: At our 12 week ultrasound it showed the fetus the size it should be at 6 weeks, instead of 12, and no heartbeat. It was startling, especially since the ultrasound tech and the radiologist who reviewed the ultrasound never said anything like "you've lost your baby", "the fetus has died", "this isn't a viable pregnancy", etc...so we weren't entirely sure what to think. The ultrasound results said 'results are consistent with embryonic demise". We met with a midwife on our team of care providers, she explained the options which were to wait and see, use misoprostol, or schedule a D & C. with just one scan I didn't want to make any permanent decisions that day, so they did a blood draw for quant_tative HCG. My levels were around 3400, unheard of for 12 weeks gestation, but only low for 6 weeks. They did another draw 3 days later and my levels had dropped to around 2400. in those 3 days, i lost most of what pregnancy symptoms I still had...my nausea had been slowly going away after 8 1/2 weeks, but my b___sts were still tender up until the 12th week. but before the 2nd blood draw, most of that went away. the dropping HCG level was all i needed to confirm that this wasn't a viable pregnancy anymore. after talking to my mom(who is a labor and delivery nurse) and our midwife, they recommended misoprostol over the d & c, only because the recovery time was slightly shorter. it sounded like a better option to me because it wasn't invasive, there was no surgery, and i didn't have to be under any anesthesia. They gave me misoprostol, with instructions to insert 4 pills v____ally (200 mg each), and if bleeding didn't start in 24hrs, repeat the dose. This was a friday. I had to sing in a wedding on saturday, and so waited until after the wedding, not knowing how quickly it would work. I was told it might take a couple days to pa__s all the tissue, that there probably would be a lot of blood, sometimes so much that i wouldn't be able to leave the toilet. I was also told that there's a 15-20% chance that the misoprostol wouldn't work, and i'd need the d & c after all, if i didn't want to wait for my body to take care of it naturally. saturday during the day i had some scant brown spotting, so my guess is that if i was inclined to wait, my body probably would have started the process within the week. I didn't want to wait, so around midnight saturday night i inserted the pills and went to bed. about an hour and a half later i started cramping and shivering, and could not get warm despite having a heating pad on my stomach. My midwife had said i could take ibuprofen for the cramps, but also prescribed Percoset in case i needed something stronger. 800 mg of ibuprofen around 2am was enough, i repeated the dose around 9am. That was enough pain relief for me, i was able to sleep a little bit. (but not much, as i was up about every hour to change my pad.)Bleeding started about an hour after that, and was very intense for about 7 hours. Fever broke after about 6 hours. I was glad for the warning of a lot of blood, otherwise i might have been more than a little alarmed. I pa__sed several clots that were big enough to feel coming out, but since the toilet water was so red I couldn't see what they were, or how big. around 11:30am sunday morning (11 hours after i took the pills) the main tissue ma__s was apparent and started to work it's way out, but then seemed to get stuck, probably on my cervix. I tried "pushing" it out, tried pulling gently(as i didn't know if anything was still attached inside) but nothing moved. around 5pm sunday afternoon most cramping and heavy bleeding had stopped, but nothing was moving. i decided to wait overnight and see if anything moved. monday morning it still hadn't, i called my midwife and she said to come into the clinic. She looked, and with forceps was able to pull gently and dislodge it. She said it was definitely the "products of conception", and asked if i wanted to see it, but i opted not to. it was probably the size of a small orange, solid ma__s, but squashy. it had gotten hung up on my cervix, but once dislodged all came out in one piece. all the major bleeding was done in a day, the remainder was like a normal period. I wore normal maxipads for 2 days after the completed miscarriage, then pantiliners after that. I had of and on bleeding, 2 days of scant brown spotting, a day of nothing, then muddy brown/red light bleeding for a day, then spotting for a day, then nothing. it's been 11 days since the miscarriage, and still have some slight spotting. I was told i might bleed for 1-2 weeks. I called my midwife's nurse with questions about the off and on bleeding, she explained it like any other sc___pe, or injury that bleeds...it bleeds for a little bit, mostly heals, but they physical activity might work the healed tissue loose so it might bleed a little more. i didn't have any cramping or other pain past the second day. they did an HCG check 1 week after the miscarriage, my levels dropped to 75. i go back in another week to check again. For me, misoprostol wasn't a bad experience at all. not comfortable, but not bad. now it's a waiting game...waiting for my hcg levels to go to zero, waiting for my cycles to resume so we can start trying again. My heart goes out to everyone who has experienced miscarriages, it is not easy to lose a baby. I wish you all solace and comfort in your time of mourning.
