My best friend did not have a positive test until she was already four months pregnant. Is this normal? I went to the doctor with her and he said that it happens more often than I think, is this true?

Katie, No it is not "normal" to not have a positive test until four months... however... there are a lot of things that happen with pregnancy more often than we think. If you consider that a doctor sees nearly 400 patients per year... and having this happen is a 1% chance...then he might very well see this 4 times per year... sooo... no, it's not normal... but doctors see a lot more abnormal cases considering the number of patients they see each year.
