Hello, I am 45 and 18wks pregnant with our second child. Had our son at 43. I opt out of any invasive prenatal testin, but did have the 1st Trimester Screening done, and just recently the Quad4 blood work. Can anyone explain to me what "Multiple of the medians" means in terms of this test. My Drs office called me because of course it came back with 1/57 chance of downs, but she said your "multiple of the Medians" is within normal range, but because of your age, it already gives you a 1/20ratio for problems. Has anyone gone through this and can better explain this blood test to me? Thanks!

I am gonna give it a try... having just been through this. They screen for 4 different proteins. Your results could have come back between the normal range, but because of your age (which the computer factors in) you got the 1/57 result. Had the exact same blood results come back and you were say 25 yrs old, they may have registered 'normal'. I am 36 and got a 1/35 chance for downs. I went thru the amnio and my prelims cleared me. I am still waiting for final results. Its quite a rough go, but the genetic counsellor I saw explained the whole thing to me. My u/s results were fine, and only one protein from my Triple Test came back low. But because of my age, the whole thing together gave me a 1/35 result. Hopefully this clears things up a bit :)

Hi, From what I understand the 'multiple of the medians" or MOM is the mothers maternal age, maternal race, maternal weight, measured by median (average) against the results from the alpha beta protein test (maternal serum test) which tests for neural tube defects. This result will give you a ratio for neural tube defects. So that said, your bloodwork for the alpha beta protein for neural tube defects was within normal range, but because of your maternal age it gives you a lower ratio. Just because of your age many of these tests are scued. Are you considering amnio? I am 41 just had my 12 week scan. I also had the first trimester bloodwork which apparently came back normal. My scan was also good. I will get full results on the 16th when I return from a trip.
I wish you all the best. Sounds to me like things are going well for you despite what the ratios will give you because of maternal age. All the best to you..oh btw. Do you know what your NT measurement was in your first trimester? Anyway..take care.

Sorry, I just realised you said you have opted out of any invasive testing.

Hi there. I had the same test done at age 38. My result came back at 1/22 for DS. My daughter was born completely healthy and we did have the chromosome bloodwork done on her after birth to confirm. 100% healthy. I did NOT have the amnio done, I did have scans done by a fetal medicine specialist but no amnio. A long wait but with a great outcome. More often than not these false readings are more indivative of placental problems that haven't reared their heads yet more than chromosome issues. I would have your dr look at your placental function which is done by scan and bloodwork. The bloodwork measures your PAPP-A. You could be facing more of a placental issue and not chromosome at all. Good luck.

I agree! The one protein (sorry.. cant recall the name... prego brain!) that came back really low was from my placenta. My genetic counsellor told me that a note would be put on my chart for that, but not to worry. She says some women just metabloize the protein faster, and so its of no consequence. Because I didn't do any screening with my other kids, there was really nothing to compare to.
