Dr Wants To Do A C Section After 3 Normal VBACS

Hi guys, I am new to the forum but I was just wondering what you think about this? I am 13 weeks pregnant with my 5th child and I am 35 years old. I had my first born at age 21 by c section because of a long labor and not dilating. I went on to have 3 more babies and all of them were natural, no problems with any of them. My doctor says he has to do a c section because none of the hospitals in southeast Texas will do natural delivery anymore if you have had a prior c section. Yes, mine was 14 yrs ago and I went on to have 3 natural after that. He said if I went into labor on m y own, that he would put me on an ambulance to a county hospital 2 hours from my house and I could deliver it there. Whats up with this? There are more complications with c sections then delvering natural. I'm not saying I am against them, but only if it becomes an emergency and then I will have one. I at least want the chance to labor and give it a try. Any pregnancy can carry a complication with it. I think alot of it has to do with money. A doctor makes $3000 more doing the surgery then he does with delvering it and so does the hosptial because you stay longer and so does the baby. I am really thinking about just having the baby at home but there are no midwifes in my area so I am still pondering on what to do. I let me Dr know that it's my body and I chose not to be cut on unless it's an emergency. Thanks for the advice!!

Wow, sticky situation. First of all, I would contact everyone I could and ask about the validity of - "because none of the hospitals in southeast Texas will do natural delivery anymore if you have had a prior c section" - There should be some sort of medical board advisory or something that can answer that. Other options may be to just call around to other docs and ask some questions (you don't have to give your name or your docs name). You might need to change docs if you find one who agrees with you. My doctors actually asked me which I prefer, they are very patient oriented and ask my opinions and decisions on most everything. I've also delivered both ways but had a horrid time with the VBACS and my baby was terribly sick from the whole ordeal, so I am considering a CS for the safety of this baby.
You doctors should respect your beliefs and thoughts unless there is a medical reason that they are pushing for a CS. Good luck with it all, keep us informed!

I would definately get a second opinion, or even better a new doctor that shares your views. What type of incision did you have 14 years ago?

Cant believe it, c-section as compared to natural (especially since you have had three natural). I can remember after giving birth to both my babies wandering around the hospital in search of food, 1 hour after first baby, 2 hours after 2nd (epidural slowed me down a bit) and the ladies who had c-section still laying there two days later. You need to specify that it is your RIGHT to have a natural child birth especially considering your previous good outcomes.
