Hi I am 10 weeks 3 days pregnant with my fifth child. My youngest just turned 14 months. I had an OB appointment yesterday and we heard the hb with the doppler, I also have had 3 u/s so far. Anyway the doc gave me the info for the First Trimester Screening. Now with my youngest I just had the NT u/s and no blood work because I heard of high false positives but now they do the bw in the first tri and it is the drops of blood you do at home and send in so when you have the u/s they will have all your results ready. I am nervous because they say there is still a 5% false positive even though my doc says it is not like the blood tests in the second trimester which are more likely to show false positive. I was wondering if any of you have taken this and what your thoughts are. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Carly, I had the first semester screening which was combined with the results from the 18 week as well. I had no false positives...but that is not to say that it can happen. I live in Canada so I am not sure if they do things a little differently here but the first semester bw if I do remember checks for neural tube defects and the combo also checks for downs and trisomy. After the second sem bw for me I remember was given a percentage of 1:23,000 for downs. My Nt was 1.3. I can't remember the rest...but I was releived. I was 39 at the time. I also had my bw done by a lab. Don't worry..do you remember you NT result? That is usually a good start as to indicate how things will follow. Sometimes combined with our age...results may seem higher...but you should have nothing to worry about.. And..Congrats on surpa__sing 10 weeks. All the best to you!!!

Hi there. I did the blood work and NT scan at 12 weeks and 2nd bloodwork at 16 weeks. In canada its IPS testing. Integrated Prenatal testing. they told me false postive rate was about 2%. Well, I got a 1/22 for DS, worried myself sick and had a perfectly healthy little girl, but carried the burden of worry for the last 22 weeks of my pregnancy. She was my 4th and last pregnancy and really put a damper on the joy of my last pregnancy. I didn't do the amnio because I did not want the risk of m/c so i waited it out.

Blessed when did they give you those numbers? Was it after the NT and bloodwork or was it after the second trimester bw? That is what I am worried about. Do you know what the nuchial measurement was? I am really scared to do the bw for fear of something like that.

Carly- Congrats on your pregnancy. I just did my 1st Tri NT and BW last week. Still waiting on the bw results. I had an issue with my last pg and 2nd Tri screening. My baby was born perfectly healthy but she had a marker for Trisomy 18- only one. Just keep in mind that these tests only a__sess the risk of a chromosomal defect and do not dignose.

I got my results 3 weeks after my final bloodwork that was done at 16 weeks. So I was 19 1/2 weeks along when they called me. I'm sorry I don't know the NT. I was told 1/22 because of the high HCG. It was something like 5 MOM. 5 times the something or other. I was seeing a fetal medicine specialist at the time because of my preeclampsia history and he said many times the false positive screens are due to issues in the placenta. Even the slightest issue in the placenta can throw these blood tests and point towards DS when its not the issue at all. If you are too take the test keep this in mind. My scans showed no markers at all. Actually know that I think of it, I remember them telling me that the NT was fine, it was all in the blood. I only took the test to have my PAPPA level checked. That part of the test comes along with the DS screen and my dr wanted the PAPPA numbers for indication of preeclampsia.

Just realized I never updated with my results. I had the First Trimester Screening done on June 20th and the doctor said the results were great, my risks were that of a 20 year old for ds and trisomy 13 and 18. The baby was so active on the sono it was fun to watch.
