Well I posted a few weeks ago about my fear of being pregnant again because of being 41. Well I just had my first u/s and although the baby's size was exactly right to the date, there was no heart beat seen. To me it makes no sense because the size was right on. How can the baby grow and no heartbeat. The u/s was all of 3 minutes long. I am doing follow up blood work but I am so confused right now. I have no signs of miscarriage although my doctor is not optimistic and thinks thats where I am heading. Has anyone had anything like this before. Thanks

How many weeks are you? The heartbeat is not visable in very early pregnancy.

Chelle6 - Hang in there. Stay positive and wait for the blood results. I a__sume your doc is checking to see if your hCG levels are doubling every 48-72 hours. I discovered I had a missed miscarriage just before the holidays last year. I was 7w2d. My hCG levels had flatlined. Because of the holidays and lack of any symptoms, we decided to let nature take its course. 4 weeks later, tired of waiting, I scheduled a D&C and had my hCG level retested. It had dropped considerably. Two days before the procedure, I finally started spotting. The day before the procedure, my doc did another u/s. She had informed my that my embryo had contiued to grow in those 4 weeks but still no heartbeat. I was surprised to hear this at the time, but my low hCG levels verified the demise of the fetus. Later, I had to remember that an embryo is a bunch of cells splitting and dividing. If we're lucky, everything goes well and that bundle of cells develops into a healthy fetus. But often, 1 in 4 pregnacies, something isn't right. In my case, there was just enough right to keep sending the message for the cells to continue dividing but not enough right to develop a healthy heart. So, unfortuantely yes, the size can be right on and can even continue to grow when there is no chance of life. And yes, you can have no signs of miscarriage for several agonizing weeks. Hence, why they call them "missed" miscarriages. Definitely get the bloodwork done. If you are less than 8 weeks, ask for another u/s. Don't make any rash decisions until you know what's going on and satisfied with all the answers. In the meantime, stay strong and be positive. Good luck.

WEll..my worst nightmare has also come true...again. I went in for my repeat ultrasound. I am 7 weeks 5 days. No heartbeat was seen either. The embryo grew 3mm. But the radiologist said things do not look good. But he cannot say where things are headed just yet..however he thought things did not look good. I had my blood drawn this afternoon as well. Will repeat the bloodwork in 48 hours. I also have no signs of miscarriage..but I have had a missed miscarriage b4 and I had to have a D&C..so I am sure that is a possibility on the horizon. I am saying my prayers tonight..I can only pray for a miracle now. :(

Kristen- I am so sorry to hear this. When is the next ultrasound? Please let us know how the bloodwork goes. I hope they are wrong and your prayers are answered. Colleen
