Pregnant At 47

Confused - June 25

I'm 47 and pregnant for the sixth time (the child was conceived naturally). I have four children from my first marriage, ages 16-22. I miscarried between my first and second child, very early, in the sixth week. I'm entering my sixth week of pregnancy now. When I went to the OB's for my first prenatal visit yesterday (with my current husband), instead of being given an exam, I was flooded with information about how high risk both the baby and I were...to the point that my husband was terrified and so was I. I almost feel pushed to terminate the pregnancy, for fear the baby will be severly handicapped, or I won't carry the baby to term, or I'll have complications during later pregnancy or childbirth. All my previous children were born later than the due date, and my smallest was nearly 9 pounds (I didn't have gestational diabetes). One has PDD (an autism spectrum disorder, and another has colitis). I'm extremely confused as to what to do. I'm supposed to speak with a genetic specialist this week, and then decide what I want to do. This has all happened in less than week, as I found out last week I'm pregnant. I'm very confused and upset and want help. Can anybody offer any advice?

I am 45 and would love to fall pregnant for the first time!!! So far unsuccessfully. I do believe there are enough tests around to be checking that the pregnancy and baby will be ok. In the end it depends on YOUR body, I am sure not all women at 47 are alike, same for me at 45. Your other kids are healthy, isn't that a really positive sign? Of course school medicin would have you believe otherwise. Listen to your body and decide from there. For me, I would be very happy to be pregnant at 45 and have been praying that I am or will be.

I just found out I might be pregnant and I'm 43, alittle worried to say the least. I'll be taking a blood test soon to find out, wish me luck as I'm not sure I'm happy about this or not.

I'd change doctors. There are plenty out there who would be supportive of you. I have a family friend who had her first 2 children at 47 and 49 and they're perfect! This should be a time of happiness - dont' let a doctor put a damper on this moment!

Ladies, it's me...Confused (I had to change the last letter to a capital "D", because someone else has used the name with the lower case "d". Anyway, thank you SO much for your encouragement and support! It hurts to read what I previously wrote, because I love my little guy SOOOOOOO much! Everything turned out fine, save for having gestational diabetes (which never got out of control). I won't diminish how much doctors can put a spook into you, though, when you're an "older" mom, so I cut myself a teensy bit of slack, when recalling that. Anyway, I have an EXTREMELY lively 2 1/2 year-old little guy whom my husband and I (and his siblings) wouldn't trade for the world. In fact, there are times both my husband and I have thought having another one (or two) would be nice...but I'm now 50, and the chances of getting pregnant are pretty slim. I'd like to know how my maternal grandmother did it, because I'm pretty certain she had a couple of children in her early-to-mid 50's. All the children were healthy, too!

I have just turned 47 and had unprotected s_x with my boyfriend 4 weeks after my last period. Now it is 6 week since I saw my last period. I have no symptoms and the home pregnancy test shows negative. Could I be pregnant? I guess I will have to get a blood test to find out. I am happy but yet a little scared about any complications. This will be first. Any advise ladies?
