Trisomy 18-pg121631251063

My daughter is 36 and pregnamt. She was just told today that her blood results show Trisomy18. She "does not" want to have the amnio done but is willing to have all of the other test done to determine if the baby is affected. Is the "amnio" the only test that could determine for sure if the baby is affected???

I just replied to your other thread. What was her risk for T18? Amnio and CVS are the only dignostic tests. Did she have the ultrasound as well? I came up with a false positive for T18 on my last pg but my daughter is fine. I hope they are worng in her case as well.

She is scheduled for the ultrasound. I guess that is the FIRST thing she does? Does the CVS require withdrawing fluid from the uterus? She's very hesitant about the amnio!! I am trying to get her to come to this site. Once I get home I will talk to her again and convince her to talk with others who had the same problem.

The ultrasound should be able to pick it up IF the baby does in fact have it. The CVS (Chronic Villus Sampling) takes a small sample of the placenta for testing. It also carries a risk or pregnancy loss, I think it may even be slightly higher than an amnio. I have also read (I can't remember where) that on us older moms the rate of false positives is higher on the blood tests. I also did not get an amnio because I did not want to risk losing my baby. They will pair the bloodwork and ultrasound results to get an overall risk. Is this the first or second trimester screening that she is doing? I feel so bad that you all have to deal with this worry, I know how terrible it can be.
