Linda, congratulations!! very awesome and thanks for taking the time to post! kristi, I look forward to hearing from you, and hope that all will be well with you and your baby. Kari, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your baby--I can't even imagine how hard that has been, and is for you. Nice to hear that you are pregnant again, I am sure you are nervous, but chances are that everything will be good. Thanks again for keeping us all posted.

I have some good things to post. I talked to my midwife today. She just came back from a conference on Ultrasound. They talked about the white spot on the ultrasound. The leaders of the conference said that of the 20 markers for DS, this is ranked #20. My midwife also said that the Dr. she practices with has never seen this be a marker for a DS baby. He has been delivering babies for 30 years. Also, this was not found with ultrasound until recently, just because the technology has gotten better. This means that there are many people out there with this and have no idea and do not have DS. Armed with this info, I feel confident that with the grace of God I will have a healthy baby girl in Feb.

thanks sara, my doctor also rated markers from lowest to highest, as far as how serious they were, and she rated the foci as the lowest, least serious marker.

Hey everyone.........well, we're all in the same predicament it seems. I just returned from my 24 week appt. and the doc informed me of a "bright spot" found at my 20 week ultrasound. I'm figuring since they didn't tell me for 4 weeks, that it must not be a factor. HOWEVER........I had the exact same thing happen with my first child in 1999 and they immediately rushed me to amnio. Scared half to death I had to wait days to find out that all the chromosomes were fine and then at the baby's birth we did another ultrasound. The spots were still there, but not causing any functional problems. She is now 6 years old......completely healthy, and doing well. My doc said that the 1999 precaution was there was a "supposed" link to either Downs or Trisomy 21 (immediate fatality due to multiple malformations) so they did amnio routinely. Now they realized that more babies were at risk while doing the amnio than they were in simply being born with the "bright spots". We are having a follow up ultrasound in 4 weeks.......centering on cardiac anatomy. I'm calling today to have a copy of my oldest daughter's report sent to me and this one too so I can compare notes. I'm trying not to be too concerned, but as a MOM........we always worry!! BTW, we have 2 girls and this one's a boy! God's Grace Is Always Sufficient! Blessings to all of you. I am 30 years old and the AFP did not show any concern.

The woman by the name of Laura who answered on October 6th, 2005 @ 8:39; before you go alarming people, make sure you get your information straight: it is Trisomy 13 the aneuploidy type incompatible with life; not 21.

This place has been a great relief to me. I have been researching all evening for something to tell my wife after we received a call this afternoon about a light spot in the heart of our baby. The doctor said it was nothing, but you don't call someone in the middle of the day to come in next week for some more tests for nothing. My wife is 23 weeks pregnant and praying for a good echocardiogram. We are both praying for a healthy baby, but feel equally blessed with the life growing in her. Thank you!

Laura - October 11

Sorry for the mistake. Has anyone had their follow-up ultrasound yet? We really didn't get much information.......just that they're doing another ultrasound on the cardiac anatomy.

Greg - October 11

We have a followup ultrasound next Thursday 10/20. I'll post again after we find out what's going on with our "peanut"

Hi all, I am 33 years old and 20 weeks pregnant. I had my first US and they picked up an echogenic focus in the left ventricle and dilated kidneys 5.1mm. I then had a follow up scan 2 days later and they still saw these anomolies. During the second scan, I was able to see my baby "boy" exercising lifting his right leg with his hand and stretching his arms above his head. He looked so cute. Everything else was normal on the US. However the doctor said my chance of a Down Syndrome baby has decreased from 1:350 to 1:94. I decided not to take the amnio because I do not believe in abortions and because of the risk it poses to a healthy baby. However, I am still worried sick and I am trying to hope that everything will be hopeful. They say dilated kidneys are more common in boys and he looked like a healthy baby when he was doing his exercises. Just wondering if anyone else is in the situation and if it turned out fine.

Tanya - October 11

Hi ANA! I am in the exact same situation as you are. I have been posting on babycenter where there is a forum for women who have these same markers. I am having a girl and I am 28 weeks now, but I had my u/s at 20 weeks and got this devastating news about the echogenic focus and the dilate4d kidneys. I have had three u/s since then, one of which was today and my doctor is not at all worried. My kidney dilation is about 5mm also, which he says is minimal. If you go over to babycenter, you can read all the stories there, but out of al the stories, not one of the women over there had a child with downs. My peri says these markers are very common. Come over to that board if you get some time. It will make you feel better! Good luck to you! Ill be poppin in here to see how you are! Tanya

Ana - October 11

Hi Tanya Thanks for the reply. I am going back at 28 weeks for another US to check the kidneys. By the way how do I get to the babycenter? Is that a website?
